May I just say that your videos are AMAZING??? FYI, for Jack Bruce fanatics, the EGO album (which also featured Ted Dunbar) had an awesome, uncredited Bruce vocal on 'Two Worlds.' It's on CD, for the curious.
Oh my God this brings back so many ACE memories, when I was a teenager, I was so into Lifetime, I only had one Album, I think it was just called 'Lifetime' - it had like a bit of 35mm film kinda design on it. I really thought Larry Young was just the best at making weird noises with a Hammond. Love it!
This is the Tony Williams Lifetime unit from the "Ego" album period...except on the record Ron Carter played the bass(electric mind you!) the live band had Juni Booth on bass, Khalid Yasin (Larry Young),organ, Ted Dunbar, guitar, Don Alias, percussion, Warren Smith, marimba, percussion, and of course Mr. Anthony Tillman Williams, drums, Leader. It doesn't get much better....
This rules. I would LOVE to see some old footage of Lifetime w/ McLaughlin, but I assume there isn't any in existence. At least none that that I have been able to find. "Emergency" and "Turn It Over" are two of my all time favorites. Even Miles is quoted as saying that Tony was great, that he was a "motherf%cker" on the drums. And we know Miles isn't really known for complimenting his musicians! (haha...)
(I saw the Tony Williams Lifetime at Tufts University (on a double bill with Leslie West's Mountain -- no shit!) shortly after Emergency! was released, The band included Tony, Larry, and John and -- no shit again! -- Jack Bruce playing bass. Maybe the best (and certainly one of the loudest) shows I've ever seen.)
Tony was like Elvin on crack. Elvin was like no one! But Tony has always been my #1 favorite. He was from some other galaxy. Sat about three feet away from him once on a gig and I had to muffle my laughing. I was hysterical & giddy from seeing something that I literally could not believe. Truly unreal. NO ONE will ever play like that. Just like the great Larry Young... dig that turban and incense, and wild ass Hammond playing! Unequalled.
I'm liistening to the Tony williams Lifetime anthology CD - heavy! Thanks for posting this clip cos its great to see the master at work on the skins. There is only one Tony Williams.
this is a re adaptation of "big nick" from the turn it over album after mc laughlin moved on. warren smith on percussion and larry young is there. magnificent!
Is there a drummer post Elvin jones , who was greater than Tony Williams please tell me ?.Tony Williams changed post bop drumming, only Klook Clark and Max are in this circle. Thanks dilberg.

An amazing B3 solo from Larry -
Super out, totally slows down the pace, and the gongs help to bring you "deeper into the monastery".
Timpani usage: brilliant.

Ditto!!! You just gotta love how Larry Young
translated the Coltrane "sound" onto the organ...I understand they did practice 2gether.....and his sound on the B3 was so raw
[and loud, too, from the accounts I read] when he played with Tony...Check his solo on
"Spectrum" [with McLaughlin on guitar]...his ability to manipulate [and motivically develop] the 4ths, tritones & wide intervals
was just frightening......

My guess would be Michael Henderson. It isn't Patrick O'Hearn. But anyways, this is great! Tony is so fun to watch!!!!

i'd say tony, elvin, billy cobham and terry bozzio are just about the best there is, but at that level it's really a matter of taste.
