@heavysumo - The Substance album is one of the albums I played over and over as a teen. I will definitely do some New Order one day. Thieves Like Us is a favorite track of mine.
@zumazmusic Excellent! That was the first song I liked from Duran Duran. One more bass lesson I was thinking of was Howard Jones' "Things Will Only Get Better." Have a good one, - Ken
Dude. Really nice job! Your ghosties are great! John is such an underrated player. Thanks for the vid. Been playing for 25 years and just never got around to this song until now. Your vid shed a light on some of the positions. Thanks so much!
i've always loved john taylor but after listening to your solos i'm beginning to grasp the creativity the guy must have had to produce such beautiful work. your work is awesome too.
@vaadaenmacchi - That's the trick, isn't it? Creating these lines to begin with is the genius. I'm just figuring it out and reproducing it. They deserve the credit for sure.
@zumazmusic I could've sworn he plays a Peavey..... You'd know better than me though. I wanna get a peavey bass and learn how to get good at it on it. 4-string neckthrough. What would you suggest is a good combo amp to use to practice and bass in case you think I'm making a bad choice for a beginner. I want something I could buy without having to buy a new bass again when I get better and good enough to play intermediate lines without mistake. Btw, excellent vid as always, Zuma!
@MrNostalgiaX - He play a Peavey now but not back then. You could get a Peavey Cirrus BXP if you want a cheap neck-through that plays really well. You could also get a GK MB115 combo. It would serve you quite well. A used Peavey bass combo is a fantastic value as well.
@sammyp1971 - I checked that time and I am pretty sure it is a C right there. There is a tiny break of 2 bars in between the "Whyyyys" where it goes C to F. As far as the funky ghost notes...I remember when I was listening to this track to "re-learn" it I thought to myself "Y'know, there aren't as many ghosties as I thought there were." So, I didn't want to overdo what wasn't there. I could have gone too far in that direction. I love me them ghosties!!!
Awesome Riff! I love this song one of my favorites. I want to buy a bass and learn how to play soon. I have been wanting to do that for a while now. Do you know any cool police like secret journey or some of stings solos during that time. I like de do do da, when he performed in 1980 in frejus live, can you play that solo at the end when he was just jaming. How bout every thing she does is magic,
I hated this song when it came out, always hated it, then rediscovered it X years later as an Aria bass player and Taylor fan..Still hate the song, but it has such a badass bassline. :)
Cool! Thanks, I'm one of the girls who loved Duran Duran and John Taylor back in the 80s but I play bass now and I think listening so much to them and his awesome bass lines shaped my musical ear. I'm gonna work on this one. Awesome!
Been listening to a lot of Duran Duran stuff recently, especially the Notorious Album.
Been doing some reading on how they started out and stuff in the late 1970s. Any one know of any info I could read on that would have more specifics on the band ?
great stuff, thanks....fantastic to have a JT bass master like yourself to help with the playing, timing, ghosties etc for a rookie like myself many thanks
.thats funny ..I can shoot 10 minutes of hd+ and upload it directly to youtube in hd !... there is a 2 gb hd limit for youtube... 10 minutes is around 1 gb...why are you going thru the extensive process to upload a lower quality vid? I have the exact same camera
Good question...unless YouTube has improved their transcoding since then, I find that with less powerful CPU's the direct upload of the Vado won't play well. It's choppy. It plays fine on my computer locally, for example, but on YouTube it is unwatchable. If you have a nice Core2Duo you won't see this. The "non" HQ version is just blurry and horrible. I would rather upload something that most people can see in pretty good quality without a crazy fast machine.
Zuma, great presentation as always, however, I do hear the difference using the Aria Pro II and the bass you are using in this video. Please don't take this the wrong way, its merely a personal opinion.
This was an easy one....but you are great as always! I wonder how people could bother you asking for tabs as your videos are so clear. Thank you again!
as simple as it is it's SUPER cool that you do this! for-real! THANX! i wish there were a shit load of these for guiatr and for songs like this instead of curent SHITTY radio rok!
Hey Z - another awesome video tutorial - gave me newfound appreciation of the bass - i'd pick it up myself if i wasn't already doing the keyboards/guitar/drums/voice... oh what the heck... what's one more? LOL
Thank you so much! My all time favourite song and now I can see what it should look like being played! Widescreen is good for getting the whole fretboard in, isn't it? Congrats on this! :D
Zuma this is awesome! You've really mastered John Taylor's style of bassplay. It's kinda hard to get used to watching you play a 5-string. Guess cuz I've seen you play "Girls On Film" so much. I love that video the most. Do you play 6-string too? Anyway you da man!
I do love this Bossa. It has a wonderful neck. Just wide enough side to side and thin but not too thin front to back. That being said, I think my bass is a bit special because I played other Bossa's last week and they had a thicker neck front to back. Also, I made the decision to play 5-string for a while and really give it a go.
The sound of this bass is completely awesome. This video doesn't do it justice as I was trying to cop the SB1000 sound somewhat. I will post a review soon.
Very cool as usual, and as for the TABs, the demonstration is worth more than the TABs. As I said before, you do not have to do this for anybody, and I personally am grateful you put all the hard work into this.
Thanks Zuma, though I can play this stuff pretty well, I have the worst time picking out the notes in the mix alot of times. Rush is like that. Another great vid per usual.
i agree on the tabs thing...i get asked for tabs all the time and i think to myself (hey i didnt use tabs to learn this, spent days and days picking through stuff till it became second nature)..and if you give it that much, after you dont need tabs..but then having a good ear helps..i just think its more fun to learn and play the song on your own, then its inside you, tabs cant give you that sort of confidence. Good work zuma!
Nice job ! Take a look at infusion26 bass cover

bad note at 1:20 ..should be an A not C ...you're playing well but you are missing alot of ghost note funk on the right hand.
