I though rock bottom was awaking in a gutter drenched in a cesspool of your own piss, vomit, and sewage. Your head in a daze, not knowing where you are, or much less what day it is- Your pants are missing and your asshole burning, certain that you allowed yourself to be sodomized numerous times for a gram or two.
At this point, you could be DEAD and no one would give a flying fuck, and worst of all is that you've just awakened from your blacked-out state fully aware of this fact.
As someone who's worked with alcoholics, I've heard plenty of dick-waving testimony about "pssssht, you think that's rock bottom? Buddy I was passed out in that fucking gutter, blah blah blah." Everyone has one of these stories, usually exaggerated and always missing the point.
The point is that every person has their own individual version of rock bottom, their personal limit as to what they're able to tolerate from their own behavior, the point at which they're ready to admit they have no control over their addictions and are ready to start a genuine attempt at recovery. That's what "rock bottom" means. To some people, rock bottom is having a bottle of wine and yelling at your kid a few times too often. Others have to lose a house, a job, or a marriage first.
Unfortunately, the sad truth is that many addicts never find that personal "rock bottom." They just die. In that respect, Carr is certainly one of the luckier ones.
@suzhouhe WOW I JUST READ THIS.. AND IT SAD THAT YOU WHERE ACTUALLY QUALIFIED TO TALK SENSE TO PEOPLE LIKE THIS... THE POINT IS TO REMEMBER THIS TERRIBLE LIFESTYLE.. BUT I GUESS YOU SLEPT THROUGH THAT PART IN CLASS..
@mjmoto72 Well, by "worked with" I meant worked on a personal level with a very close family member who spent the better part of a decade ruining their life on a dramatic scale before finally falling over dead of complications due to alcohol poisoning. I've sat in on plenty of AA / Al-Anon sessions, read plenty of literature, but yes, you got me -- I've never taken an actual counseling "class." So I guess you win.
Seriously, though, what's with the all caps? Were you drunk when you wrote this?
you call that rock bottom.... OH PLEASEEEEEE..... spare me these foolish yuppie dramatics about writing a book about writing a book about a so called rock bottom.
all i'm trying to say littleoutrage is that i have NO sympathy for someone seeking to profit from laments about how he spent his spare time and money. it's like andybaby said... DRUGS ARE BORING.... except of course for those getting high. O.K. so BOOO-FUCKING-HOOO the high let the urban proffesional down...who would have thought it posssible. since this mundane chump carr fancies himself a writer let me quote the great PERCY SHELLEY... " MAN WHO MAN WOULD BE MUST RULE THE EMPIRE OF HIMSELF.
This guy should get a suit, and catch a crowded train on time to a boring 9 to 5 job, answer to his prick of a boss, and do it for 30 years for a wife who wont fuck him anymore, and kids who disrespect him, then he'll know true pain.
The guy you describe isn't rock bottom, he's just an ordinary loser. People with a conscience tend to put neglecting their children in the personal hell category and a loveless marriage in the I'll fix it tomorrow category.
@MrBloograss How is that racist?
