  • This musician is south Indian music's Mozart! Her Thodi has the maturity of our three maestros combined: TN Krshnan, Lalgudi, and MS Goplaakrshnan mixed with Professor N Rajam's love of long sustained tones (Deergha Viraama Gamakam). May Shree MahaSarasvati Bless this musical Pratibha always!!

  • Genius. I love her. Thank you, Paul in California

  • amazing performance am fan of u dear........nice

  • Humbling.

  • Aishu!! I love you! Ur so amazing!

  • This is straight out of TN Krishnan's standard thodi alapana. It si one thing to emulate great gurus like him. But, one has to be creative in Alapanas. Not that I am running down. But, I think artists have certain responsibility. The person is young as she grows will fulfill the promise one hopes. Good luck to her.

  • @laddujahangiri Totally agree.. glad someone else noticed this. But it's not so easy to emulate a great artist like TNK, so full credit there.

  • BRAVO --BRAVO-BRAVO !!!! SUPER-SUPER-SUPER!!!

  • It's a wonderful performance, amazing control :)

  • I <3 Aishu!

  • at 13,if she can play like that,imagine..excellent...brilliant..soulful..fantastic..

  • Where was this held???49000 views??OMG!!!!

  • @TheVishal0007

This was a live concert at Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore on 12/28/2006

  • I love that PDPDMP,,,,, part.

  • Shri TNKrishnan's amplitude modulation and bowing comes through. Beyond, guidance obviously very talented and must be very dedicated and practice a ton to have got to this level. May God bless her

For ggviolins - students of an elderly NJ lady teacher regularly play at Cleveland Thyagaraja festival - check her out

For Krishiyer1989 - never too late. Why not start now?

  • She must have an amazing memory. I'm impressed.

  • how i regret not learning carnatic music as a kid !

    god bless her !

  • Reallllllllllllly a nice music.. to say, i liked thodi raagam after hearin frm aishu's only :) God bless u aishu.. wish u a bright future :)

  • how is the indian violin tuned?

  • G-D-G-D

  • well it depends on the singer's pitch actually. any tuning works as long as the first and the second are at perfect fifths. you could have F C F C or C G C G or D A D A etc

  • Wow!

    u r sixteen???

    u'r really gifted!

    GREAT! :-)

  • Very nice sweetie!!

  • your fingers must hurt with all the vibrato and shifting. i hope i am that good one day

  • what is with the profound comments lol

  • 太好聽了 :)

  • Wow! It was amazing and enthralling. It was really a touching performance from Aishu!

  • very good,,also fantastic music

  • Gorgeous! I've played violin classically for nine years, and now I'm looking to expand my horizons. I was first thinking about argentine tango, then arabic, and then latin. Then I looked into bluegrass american, and then chinese folk. But now, after seeing this, I think I just might settle on indian style. It's a shame I have no idea where to find a teacher of this style in the USA.

  • Are yu still looking for the teacher? might be able to help find one depending on where you live. Let me know.

  • Any good teachers in Philadelphia area, near Norristown specifically. Thankyou.

  • Good player no doubt. Way too much copying of TN Krishnan. Its so important to have own style to be able to attract crowds on a sustained basis and even for self fulfillment.

  • She is just 16. Time is on her side. As of now let her be a TNK clone.

On the other hand it is not easy to be a clone of a legend.! So, keep up the good work Aishu.

  • she goes to my high school and her dad is my math tutor... righ know aishu is a junior

  • marveleous!

  • I don't understand this at all.

  • Terrific play ! Thanks Apunni

  • that was amazing!

  • Beautiful!

  • For those oldies (a.k.a 'goli sodas' in Tamil) who keep cribbing that the traditional music is left to tatters after their generation can safely shut up!

Carnatic music is eternal and it transcends the fads of the contemporaries. It explores melodies like no other system of music (as demonstrated by this 13 year young kid here). Due to its inherent disposition towards improvisation, the nuances are only limited by the creativity of the performer.

Awesome job AV. Looking forward to hear more !

  • Well said, saig2007. The freedom to improvise, providing the artist has had sufficient practice with his or her instrument, can imbue even the most simplistic melody or composition with a facet of expression often unachievable by strictly adhering to the written notation.

  • @saig2007 I applaud your optimism and respect for the younger generation. I am not sure if I can join with you in putting down the older generation. For me that would lack Para-maTa-bahumaanam.

  • Brilliant show at 13 years! To play a tODi rAgam so well at 13 yrs is indeed marvelous. Go places Aishwarya! God bless you kid :)

  • I dearly love the Carnatic violin.

  • Beautiful playing.

  • what type of music is this?? i luv this; mystical and enchanting...

  • This is " Carnatic Classical Music".A style of music originated in Southern India. I am so glad you liked our music.

  • Good on you girl..this is awesome...

  • Very nice... matured music... how old is this lady ?

  • At the time of this recording in 2006, Aishu was 13 years old. Read her story on the web at divinestringsdotcom

  • this is great, i always wondered why the violinists play in that position, does it offer a specific advantage?

  • My understanding (and I honestly am in no position of expertise) is that it more closely resembles the position of other string instruments played with bows, which had played a part in earlier music. I can't remember the name of the instrument I am thinking of, though.

Many Scandinavian fiddlers also continue play the fiddle in their traditional position, with the violin sticking out from their torso. Different reason, though -- a fiddle without a chinpiece is not comfortable on the chin. :[

  • FWIW, it does offer some advantages, but the main one is a relaxed position for the hand and wrist to do detailed motions. In Carnatic music, the definition of a note is not just pitch, but a shape/motion. In a Western frame, the pitch slides and forms you see would be considered advanced, but for Indian music, it's essential.

When the violin was first brought to India, it was held and played in a Western style initially, and as techniques advanced, this position was adopted after a few decades.

  • very nice video.i am very interested to watch an d here these types of music

  • Thanks for sharing this. Really wonderful

  • people all over love south indian violin.

bless you all who continue this tradition.

    i'm in canada

  • every sangathi is classic tnk.. the only situation when imitation is better than originality is when you're imitating the master tnk. excellent work

  • gr8 performance .......it reminds me my guru....

  • I am Aishu's Paternal Grandfather. Aishu's original lessons were with my wife who was a Violin teacher. When my departed for her heavenly home, I thought music has left my family. Happy my darling girl retained it.

May God bless her with prosperity and success.

    Ramaswamy.

  • Music is in safe hands, understand your feelings. God bless her. Carnatic music is in good hands now. People realize its importance and significance. Our simplicity is always a bliss. You should be a proud grandfather. In fact you should be thank your son and your daughter in law.

  • Bhesh ... very well done!

  • wow this is amazing!..it brings out a lot of emotions. =)

  • ha, i went to middle school with her.

  • good playing..... keep it up

  • Check out "Nadia" by guitarist's Jeff Beck and tell me what you think of the piece and technique he used to approximate what Aishu is playing with the violin!

  • Now if I could employ this technique, and play these melodies on guitar--that would be an advancement for the western world. I do respect the fact that this is sacred music and like the Sun everyone can enjoy it's rays!

  • Check out John McLaughlin and Shakti. You'll find it very interesting. He was one of the first to play Indian Classical with guitar.

  • Excellent manodharma (temperment) and technique at such a young age! Best wishes for continued growth and success, dear girl!

  • this gal has a great talent.. and greatly influenced by her master. im sure, with her Guru's hearty blessings and furthue guidance, she can definitely come up in music.

  • exellent, keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you Apunni.

  • What are the violin strings tuned to ?

  • The strings are tuned 'F', 'C', 'F', 'C' from the 4th string to the 1st string. The tuning is an octave apart.

  • way beee....:))

  • gr8!! loved it

  • Great tone. Reminescent of TNK's tonality. Nurture the talent and let it mature with the music to fruition. It would be a shame to let this go to waste like so many other talented kids who fizzle out due to over-exposure and lack of understanding of the depths of carnatic music. Greater the talent, greater is the responsibility on the individual. Good luck and work hard towards higher goals.

  • well said kvndasa.

Indeed a great rendition of Thodi. Good luck to the artist.

  • Awesome !

  • it is full improvisation rite?..we tend to pplay same thing too much in these cases..best thing is to have a beat behind that changes ..

  • Brilliant. God bless you. I am giving a link my my blog which analyses Carnatic Raags.

  • Great future. God bless you child.

  • why is that they like playing things sad?..its deep to play sad..but i think we go out of balance if we tr y to play too sad..

  • Tjodi Raaga is like that. Each Raaga create a different mood to the audience. Honestly I dont like Thodi either... but its a hard raaga to sing or play for.

  • Thodi has many shades, not only sadness. There is some kind of profundity and the slides back and forth sometimes bring about a sense of realization/meditation, etc. Good renditions of Thodi send shivers down my spine - by being both refreshing and thought-provoking.

  • profound really is an apt description for thodi...whenever i listen to it i feel like i'm hearing some important secret!

  • I love it!!!!! She's awesome.
