This musician is south Indian music's Mozart! Her Thodi has the maturity of our three maestros combined: TN Krshnan, Lalgudi, and MS Goplaakrshnan mixed with Professor N Rajam's love of long sustained tones (Deergha Viraama Gamakam). May Shree MahaSarasvati Bless this musical Pratibha always!!
This is straight out of TN Krishnan's standard thodi alapana. It si one thing to emulate great gurus like him. But, one has to be creative in Alapanas. Not that I am running down. But, I think artists have certain responsibility. The person is young as she grows will fulfill the promise one hopes. Good luck to her.
Shri TNKrishnan's amplitude modulation and bowing comes through. Beyond, guidance obviously very talented and must be very dedicated and practice a ton to have got to this level. May God bless her
For ggviolins - students of an elderly NJ lady teacher regularly play at Cleveland Thyagaraja festival - check her out
For Krishiyer1989 - never too late. Why not start now?
well it depends on the singer's pitch actually. any tuning works as long as the first and the second are at perfect fifths. you could have F C F C or C G C G or D A D A etc
Gorgeous! I've played violin classically for nine years, and now I'm looking to expand my horizons. I was first thinking about argentine tango, then arabic, and then latin. Then I looked into bluegrass american, and then chinese folk. But now, after seeing this, I think I just might settle on indian style. It's a shame I have no idea where to find a teacher of this style in the USA.
Good player no doubt. Way too much copying of TN Krishnan. Its so important to have own style to be able to attract crowds on a sustained basis and even for self fulfillment.
For those oldies (a.k.a 'goli sodas' in Tamil) who keep cribbing that the traditional music is left to tatters after their generation can safely shut up!
Carnatic music is eternal and it transcends the fads of the contemporaries. It explores melodies like no other system of music (as demonstrated by this 13 year young kid here). Due to its inherent disposition towards improvisation, the nuances are only limited by the creativity of the performer.
Well said, saig2007. The freedom to improvise, providing the artist has had sufficient practice with his or her instrument, can imbue even the most simplistic melody or composition with a facet of expression often unachievable by strictly adhering to the written notation.
@saig2007 I applaud your optimism and respect for the younger generation. I am not sure if I can join with you in putting down the older generation. For me that would lack Para-maTa-bahumaanam.
My understanding (and I honestly am in no position of expertise) is that it more closely resembles the position of other string instruments played with bows, which had played a part in earlier music. I can't remember the name of the instrument I am thinking of, though.
Many Scandinavian fiddlers also continue play the fiddle in their traditional position, with the violin sticking out from their torso. Different reason, though -- a fiddle without a chinpiece is not comfortable on the chin. :[
FWIW, it does offer some advantages, but the main one is a relaxed position for the hand and wrist to do detailed motions. In Carnatic music, the definition of a note is not just pitch, but a shape/motion. In a Western frame, the pitch slides and forms you see would be considered advanced, but for Indian music, it's essential.
When the violin was first brought to India, it was held and played in a Western style initially, and as techniques advanced, this position was adopted after a few decades.
I am Aishu's Paternal Grandfather. Aishu's original lessons were with my wife who was a Violin teacher. When my departed for her heavenly home, I thought music has left my family. Happy my darling girl retained it.
Music is in safe hands, understand your feelings. God bless her. Carnatic music is in good hands now. People realize its importance and significance. Our simplicity is always a bliss. You should be a proud grandfather. In fact you should be thank your son and your daughter in law.
Check out "Nadia" by guitarist's Jeff Beck and tell me what you think of the piece and technique he used to approximate what Aishu is playing with the violin!
Now if I could employ this technique, and play these melodies on guitar--that would be an advancement for the western world. I do respect the fact that this is sacred music and like the Sun everyone can enjoy it's rays!
this gal has a great talent.. and greatly influenced by her master. im sure, with her Guru's hearty blessings and furthue guidance, she can definitely come up in music.
Great tone. Reminescent of TNK's tonality. Nurture the talent and let it mature with the music to fruition. Tjodi Raaga is like that. Each Raaga create a different mood to the audience. Honestly I dont like Thodi either... but its a hard raaga to sing or play for.
Thodi has many shades, not only sadness. There is some kind of profundity and the slides back and forth sometimes bring about a sense of realization/meditation, etc. Good renditions of Thodi send shivers down my spine - by being both refreshing and thought-provoking.
