very interesting solo... pulling some themes from Permanent Waves (which I assume that was the tour they were on) Also... a bit similar to the concept on YYZ with the Harmonic Minor scale. I think I am hearing that in there. Anyway, thanks for posting . This is a cool little treasure.
As someone previously said, it's increible how much a song can become fantastic, more structured and well-made once you sit down and record it in a studio, where you MUST stop and hear what's good and what's bad, it's the improvement of the magic of the improv moment
Even though I don't know them personally; from all I've seen and read, I'm pretty sure Alex, Geddy and Neil would've voted for Obama if they were American. And that's because they are 3 progressive thinking, intelligent men - not money sucking, religious toting dipshits(:
@nev594 You are so wrong. Don't you know that Neil is an Ayn Rand fan. Ayn Rand is a liberitarian, that's even more conservative than Republican. you fucking dipshit, Obama sucks ass and everyone knows it. Put that in your pipe and smoke it
@hat6036 they are not republicans, neil appreciates ayn rand doesn't mean he's a republican. A libertarian isn't more conservative than a republican there is such thing as anarchist libertarian. Rush has never been about the money they love to play music and great music at that
@hat6036 most people play music to get paid and that's it but rush has always been down to earth and gracious to good causes, it has never been about money with and republicans tend to be very greedy
@hat6036 I guess you are blind to see that the guys are normal guys who don't spend their time on just making money, neil likes to ride his motorcycle, ged likes to go hiking, they make good use of themselves
@hat6036 You and your dumbshit friends who put politics into everything caused this recession and made America the worst country in the world. I'm going to listen to my Rush peacefully and move to Canada, where dumb fucks like you don't exist, DICK Cheney
This is one of those songs the guitar riff makes you love instantly the moment you hear it. I know that's how I felt when i first heard this play on the Radio station. I was working construction, building a garage foundation. I dropped all my tools and instantley Maxed the volume on my car stereo. At that time I'd never heard this song before.
I'm actually positive that crowd felt the same here in this concert.
This is really coooool!!!! It gives you insight how the song started out and was structured a little differently as the recording process took place! It's amazing how small changes can affect a song so much......
@theDurangoman dude you sound ignorant when you say that...anyways it's not obama that controls anything anyways, he is just a figurehead for something much bigger,of which i'm which im not sure, but obviously he doesnt control shit.
The synths are just up in the mix. This is very close to the final product, whereas Tom Sawyer was way different. Alex again whittles his solos down to something much more sparse on the finished products. The story is that while they were playing these songs in a local club in Toronto they were breaking down the gear, then going to a studio and setting all back up again and recording these songs. They hated the final product and re-recorded the whole album to get what we now have.
@G4331 Was that negative or positive? i can't tell. Neverminding that this band kicks ass, eventhough this particular version here is captured in a very low quality
Since everyone seems to have an opinion on this solo, I'll add my own. It isn't so much that it's a terrible solo, it just has no flow to it...it sounds as if Alex started the solo in the middle of a longer solo. Almost as if he cut a 30 second snippet out of La Villa Stangiato and glued it in here, with no regard for what comes before or after it.
@TheDDG In my opinion it doesn't sound like that all. It sounds like it is almost appropriate just a young lerxst would rather shred then have some feeling.
This was before the albumn recording, it was a new song at the time, the "final" version had not been decided upon but this is close to it. The main difference is the guitar intro. It's interesting to hear this early version and compare it though. I wish rock bands would actually do different versions of their songs in concert. Like jazz artists change the solos, play longer versions, different arrangements etc. Rock bands play the same songs the same way for decades. That's amazing to me.
dont lose your head man, you asked a question I ansewrd it. Jeeze dont gotta be a prick about it. and if you were a RUSH fan you should be able to tell by looking at it.
yeah geddy said that unlike all of thier previous albums they had time to work on moving pictures and before that they just went to the recording studio and wrote it as they went
Well back in the day they would tour after an album then take like a month off or so and write like 3 tracks and then continue touring and release them early just like this
Yes they did actually, my dad seen them when they did this pre-realease and also on the Hemispheres tour when they did the pre-release of Freewill...pretty cool stuff!
The album solo has always been one of the best ever. It was so cool and I love the tone. This was pretty cool though! Terry Brown sat and listened to them jam this and went "Damn we gotta get a groove going for this song". Ged's voice was about blow out at the end!
RUSH has said in interviews that they always want to experiment and change their sound on every album and it is interesting to hear how this early version contains hints in Alex's riffs of songs they have done before. But Rush has always had good producers and they have usually helped detect similarities and make suggestions. Pre or Post both versions are great and I just wish Alex would expand on his solos!
it's a shame these first performance recordings couldn't be legally turned into a cd. It'd make a really cool addition to any music collection, especially for a rush lover like me.
love hearing this! this pic is like the one on the big 4 foot poster from the 70's but this is a different snap than on the poster. their pos make-up room pose, but never saw this exact one without the smiles.

The guitar solo that ended up on Moving Pictures is a work of art; one of my favorite Rush moments.
Thank god Alex didn't use the one he played here (skip to 2:54 for the torture) during the studio version recording. Total shit.

Allow me to introduce you to a novel concept: some musicians actually play more than one instrument.
Hone up on your powers of observation, skippy. My website has been prominently displayed on my Youtube profile since I joined.

He might be a drummer, but he`s right. ;-)
The album solo is structured, melodic, better timed and simply classier. The solo here is wayward and pointless.
Rush are my favourite band but never put anyone so high as to be immune from criticism!
