Yep they were well good at my school! miss macleod (my music teacher) said they were rubbish and i believed her! she then said actually they were brilliant! I didn't get a chance to see them myself as i was in sociology at the time which was boring... i needed them to cheer me up!
Pray for John Joe Kelly that the 'Carpal Tunnel Syndrome' doesn't set in and shorten his brilliant career before the world gets to enjoy his mastery of the 'skin'. JJK gets top billing on DaFlikkers.
It is modern. They are taking the music to the next level. Trust me, they have a great following of musicians who are beginning to follow in their lead. Their arrangements are amazing and complex and sophisticated.
can i just say to the person that said this had no 'soul' if you see them live then it really does and also Sarah is my aunty...and some of these tunes have really sad and amazing stories behind them....dont slag them of!
Beautiful playing but it strikes me as modern narval darvel. The tunes don't go anywhere. You certainly couldn't whistle them. I doubt this will survive and beplayed in fifty years. It's very idiosyncratic- neither classical nor trade. Full of technique but not much soul.
Sorry mate, but must disagree, I whistle these tunes all the time. They also mostly follow classic irish lines i.e. jigs, reels, hornpipes, marches etc. Brian uses a lot of ornamentation which can make the tune sound more complex than it really is.
Probably the best Flook video on Youtube, just a shame the sound goes a bit wonky once the fast tune kicks in.
The set is 'Wrong Foot Forward' from 'Haven', in case anybody who didn't know was wondering. If they were, they should go out and buy that album right now.
But they still never fail to amaze me. Everytime i hear them their sound is tigher and has evolved, become more sophisticated and changed developmentally. Listen to Flatfish of Flook Live and then Haven or Rubai and the difference is obvious. Its simply an amazing and wonderful sound that's got better and better with time.
You're right, this is the best one on the site, despite the stutters. Three guesses as to who this is...? Clue: I just awoke from a one-man Jim Garrahy's chocolate fudge orgy. As if the name wasn't enough!

Quizá sea DADGAD: RE LA RE SOL LA RE. es habitual en la musica irlandesa y folk por extension, en la buena claro... tiene un sonido muy potente.

How do you know what a bodhran is if you talk about "the bodhran player" instead of John Joe Kelly? JJK equals bodhran!
