Too bad I can't afford this camera, cause I love the size of that thing, even with a grip a D3100 or D5100 wouldn't even match it in size, about the only thing I could possibly do is rent one for a week and cry when it leaves my hands...
No matter how many pixels a DSLR has, it`s small 35mm sensor will always limit the image quality. More pixels doesn`t mean a better image. I own a d3x, but I can`t afford medium format, so whats the solution?
Buy a 35mm film camera to practice developing and enlarging, then move up to Large Format film! You can get a LF setup for less cash than a d3x, but the image quality is superior cos the smallest LF film size is 4by5 INCHES, which is FOURTEEN times the size of a full frame dslr sensor...
24.38mp...do the maths....6048x4032 pixels...why say its 24.5????..cos it sounds better!...well its wrong and any decent reviewer should pick up on it!..instead they all repeat the Nikon claims like sheep!...jeeze thank god Kai came along!...this review is worse than listening to a broken record...
i use the D70s and D300 for every day stuff and work. This thing looks awesome, i dont think id be able to just use it for my work, id use it all the time
I migrated from the Kodak DCS SLR/n after Kodak discontinued their support for that camera to the D3X. Although I liked the DCS, the D3X is far superior and super easy to use. It is a magnificent machine.
@gh5432 it is a camera for day to day use though. i know several people who use this camera for both work and recreational shooting. so they don't need more than one camera
You didn't mention one of the most important things, that this camera does not have internal sensor cleaning. Yet you wasted time saying twice that it has dual CF slots. Idiot.
Great camera review of the Nikon D3X. There are so many digital cameras on the market and this is a pretty amazing one. I have looked at other websites and this one seems to be the top ranked. There seems to be other cameras on market, this seems to be ahead of the game according to a website called digital camera ratings dot net. I wonder what Nikon's next professional camera will be? Perhaps the D800?
At around $8,000 thats abit to high for me but in a couple of years it will be reduced to almost nothing just wait and buy it a year or so after the d4 rolls out rember even good or exelent dslrs loose their value quickly good lenses however retain their value longer
I saw this camera today, I was shocked how ridiculously large it was, and I thought "that has to be one special camera :|". I think I'll stick with my goal of getting me a D3100 :), at least it's not $8,000, ughh :S
@nmsll the reason why it's large is because it's a full professional camera. there are more mechanical features and things needed hence it's larger size. the dual memory card slot, larger capacity battery and larger sensor are some examples as to why it's larger. also if you think this is big look at the medium format cameras and large format. the higher the level you go. the larger the camera gets
I heard your company is very bad with customer service. Instead of making funny videos, maybe you should focus on getting your business model right first.
I wouldn't buy anything from you and I'd warn others not to buy from you either!
It seems hard to place nikons target audience for this camera. I assume most pros go for medium format, so most d3x buyers must be amateurs/semi-pros with money
@snifnscratch maybe - you may be right, maybe not. I agree with you - I've seen dedicated photographers pro using d90 . :)) even you can see them on TV their cameras.
@snifnscratch Don't be fooled by what you see on internet, mate. I have both M9 and D3x and there are COMPLETE different materials. Both are fantastic, but you have to know that they are many things you wouldn't be able to do with the M9. The list is long : No AF, almost impossible to use the screen to check the pics in good conditions, jpeg sucks, final results only depend on what you do on your computer since the M9 only delivers very neutral images. There's a world between both ;-)
@WhiteyRavensTH I appreciate what youre saying - in reality the m9 would be more difficult for my type of shooting, but I can live without AF. My problem with the d3x is that the only REAL difference between it and my d700 is resolution, so the extra £3k isnt worth it. Id rather stay with my d700 and wait to go medium format. In the meantime I may get an old f5 and go through a few hundred rolls till I get it right.
@MultiD3000 whats not to understand ... you have 1: shutter 2: F/stop 3: ISO all tht stuff its the same on every cam ... just gotta know how to use it ;)
What is the use of all of this ISO setup while this camera can not maintain low grain even with only 200 ISO ?
This camera and the Nikon lenses to go with it is the worst camera ever been made in this world, I am so sorry to say so but I have the Nikon D3X plus having the Nikon 300MM F2.8 VR, 70-200MM F2.8 VR, Nikon 10,5MM, Nikon 105MM Macro Nikon 28MM Lens, Nikon 85MM Lens and the Nikon 24-70 mm f2.8 Lens.
why is it that everytime there showing a camera this fucken expensive the have a little dinky 50mm on it shit! its an 8000$ camera fucken get a better lens im sure you can afford it
@kex192 yes u ignorant dumb ass i know what its used for, if you fucking payed attention to what i said, was this camera is like 8000$ and the lens is only like 400$ i would be using something way different, shut the fuck up also, i dont need your smart ass comment. its called and opinion
... At around 2:30 into the video, he says ... "about 50mb for raw files & about 72mb for tiff" after that he says a word that I can't understand. He says something like "this is not (?something?) processing because it might even be larger when you have files in that case"

1 question about dual card slots. in backup mode, if you take a photo, there will be a duplicate photo in card 2, right? but what if you didn't like the photo you took, and deleted it, would the duplicate shot be deleted as well?
Absolutely correct Anabasis75. Extended range is usually a range where the image quality isn't up to standard, and USUALLY usable in only a few practical applications, black and white photography, surveillance, etc.
It means that the camera can record to those sensitivity levels (eg 50 or 6400) but the images aren't good enough to make the ISO (international standards organization) benchmarks of quality. Basically, realize you get less image quality if you are outside the standard range.
I own the Nikon D700 and it is designed for it's excellent high ISO/Low light capabilities. The burst rate can be up'd from 5 to 8 (or 9) with the battery pack attachment. What I am getting into right now is NIkon's CLS and I am so glad Nikon put a pop up flash on this camera. It's not for using an actual flash, but triggering your flash units w/o cords or radio devices. .
canon is ok, but the best thing for nikon is... you can sue lens from the 60's 80s 90s on all the latest DSLR.... awesome ! Nikon D3x? not famuilar with that i plan to buy a D300s soon or a d90, still thinking... D3x looks to advanced for me...
D90, or D300s if you want to stick with nikon, if canon, try the 5D mrk2 or the 7D, i myself used the D5000 as a beginner dslr for about 2 months, and now im upgrading to a canon 7D, i do cinematography alot also. I've been shooting since 2006 using a panasonic, Fmc 50 or something like that
Well, if your really familar with the D60, stick it with nikon. the only reason i went with canon was it's newer technologies and that it had 1080p MOVIE mode. If you take mostly portraits stick with nikon you won't regret it, now if you take sports, and need the fast Burst speed, take the 7D.
I guess i can be considered a semi-pro DSLR user, but I'm only 14 :)
Also LENS is more important than the body, is what i learned from pros.
people recommend D3 over D3x.... seriously there're only 2 kinds of people buying this camera... 1. those who know the real difference between D3 & D3x & know what they're looking for in buying a camera that suits their job requirements.... 2. those who are well stacked & clueless & only think more pixels are better.... once i over heard a conversation that a dude said the D300 is better than D3 because D300 has 12.3mps whilst D3 only has 12.1mps... lol
that is the correct pronounciation, sir. Naikon is how many mispronounce it. Nikon is a japanese company, not American, hence the neekon prounciation stands.
All brands do the same thing but canon and nikon offer a wider selection of bodies and lenses. Olympus, for example, doesn't make a real pro DSLR like canons 1Ds Mark III or nikons D3x.
There is a difference in image quality between a 50mp Hass and a 4mp Nikon camera. Primarily in this case because the Hass has a much larger sensor than an FX or DX. Also those little compacts touting 12Mp are total crap when trying to make serious images as the sensors are very small. Sensor size and mega pixels within the sensor are relative. Stuff more pixels into a sensor and the more noise you start to get at high ISO, larger sensors with fair amount of pixels is best, like D700.
Please watch and subscribe. I'm 17 and i have been told i have a gift with a camera. Photography is my life. So please help me live my dream. and support me God Bless.
Haha, thats a bit extreme, being that no nikon has anywhere near the same sharpness of a hassy, but when making big prints, or doing a lot of post production, the more megapixels DO help, because with both of those things colors, and overall image quality gets worse.
@hihellocute Perhaps for your needs. Those who require larger megapixel normally require it for large prints. It's all about printing and detail. So Megapixels do matter however it all depends on how large you want to view or print your work.
i would personally recommend a photographer to get the d3 over the d3x. we are at a point where resolution doesn't matter and 12 megapixels is enough. Even if you weren't satisfied with 12mp you could resize an image in photoshop or various other softwares and still get sharp results.
Certainly 12MP are enough for portrait work and print work that requires the cleanest image; however 24MP is nothing to sneeze at. More detail is more detail, and for certain users 24MP is preferable to 12.
The "Good":> Simply astonishing pictures • Excellent bracketing and metering functionality • Great dynamic range • Superb build quality • One of the best LCD screens for on-camera reviewing
The "Bad": >Relatively low ISO range • No automatic sensor cleaning • Some noise at full magnification on higher ISO levels • Price
How come this camera is heavily promoted and highly rated, but still 85% of photographers still choose canon cameras. I wonder why?... Sony sensor, no sensor auto cleaner, high price, heavy, even the d700 is still heavy although the same size of 5d m2 but still way heavy.
"5% of photographers still choose canon cameras. I wonder why?"
Because back in the 80s Canon got on the autofocus train much faster and got all the pros to jump ship[ from Nikon (which was THE camera company for pros then) to Canon. Now both are just as good, but Nikon has never done anything so amazing that pros were going to dump 20 years of glass.
Doesn't matter, go to a camera store and use a canon and a nikon, whichever one feels better, get that one. I have Nikons, some of my friends have Canon, they both do the same thing.
Exactly!! im tired of people say that one is better than the other!
But i think you should buy the same type of cameras your friends have that way they can teach you how to use it, and even maybe let you use some of their equipment (tips learned from kris krug haha)
LOL@stupid americans who think they know everything just because you're in the most powerful continent in the world. You don't need to change the pronunciation. it sounds good the way it is. Nikon is Nikon not nigh- kon. everything's in lower form after "N". it's not HiFi. You sound silly by complaining to a word/brand spelled correctly but wrongly pronounced in north america. You might as well pronounce Canon to Cay-non or sushi to Sassy! or better yet mitsubishi to may-tsu-bigh-shy.
Do you hear Mac or Microsoft being pronounced something else outside of your continent? I dont hear ipod being pronounced epod in asia. Typical american who doesn't think before they voice out racial comments. Thats why our economy's down. By the way am not asian
but who gives a shit, let people pronounce it the way they want. All darkbyke was saying is that it's annoying to hear the pronunciation as Neekon instead of Nikon, which we're accustomed too. And i completely agree with him. But then you gotta get dumb and dumber coming in and ripping on him because "it's japanese you crazy americans" and "it's neekon you idiot its JAPANESE haaha you americans can't pronounce anything properly, i love cock". Names change when they go overseas, get used to it.
I can give you an instant example of the similar thing with the Nike brand. While in America its pronounced as "Nigh-kee" in Russia it is pronounced as "nighk". Why? Because it's more convenient considering the language differences.

isn't this like the most expensive DSLR on the market??
siLaRoo 2 years ago
No, not even close. Check out the Hasselblad H3D and such.
xjoncamposx 2 years ago 3
no way. The new Hasselblad H4d is about 45k for the body only. I have a demonstration coming soon to show it off. Can't wait!

what it means extended range in ISO ?
may9119 2 years ago
It means that the camera can record to those sensitivity levels (eg 50 or 6400) but the images aren't good enough to make the ISO (international standards organization) benchmarks of quality. Basically, realize you get less image quality if you are outside the standard range.

I own the Nikon D700 and it is designed for it's excellent high ISO/Low light capabilities. The burst rate can be up'd from 5 to 8 (or 9) with the battery pack attachment. What I am getting into right now is NIkon's CLS and I am so glad Nikon put a pop up flash on this camera. It's not for using an actual flash, but triggering your flash units w/o cords or radio devices. .
D3 and D3x will always be out of my price league.
rocklobster2112 2 years ago
canon is ok, but the best thing for nikon is... you can sue lens from the 60's 80s 90s on all the latest DSLR.... awesome ! Nikon D3x? not famuilar with that i plan to buy a D300s soon or a d90, still thinking... D3x looks to advanced for me...

D90, D300, D300s, D700 - Something there, when you REALLY learn all of it and REALLY know what you want and WHY.

I heard that the d700 was the ultimat pro Dslr from Nikon... this true?
904SF 2 years ago
The D700 is one of the best Nikon's DSLR's, indeed.
ChioPhotography 2 years ago 2
No, The D700 is a great camera (I own one), but it isn't up to the caliber of the D3 or the D3x.
Anabasis75 2 years ago 4
D90, or D300s if you want to stick with nikon, if canon, try the 5D mrk2 or the 7D, i myself used the D5000 as a beginner dslr for about 2 months, and now im upgrading to a canon 7D, i do cinematography alot also. I've been shooting since 2006 using a panasonic, Fmc 50 or something like that
Purepromedia 2 years ago
would it be a wise idea to switch to canon? Can you give be a good reason why you switched to Canon so it could help me make a better decision?
904SF 2 years ago

2. those who are well stacked & clueless & only think more pixels are better.... once i over heard a conversation that a dude said the D300 is better than D3 because D300 has 12.3mps whilst D3 only has 12.1mps... lol

what the hell is a neekon?
dypie 2 years ago
that is the correct pronounciation, sir. Naikon is how many mispronounce it. Nikon is a japanese company, not American, hence the neekon prounciation stands.
Q124R 2 years ago 4
All brands do the same thing but canon and nikon offer a wider selection of bodies and lenses. Olympus, for example, doesn't make a real pro DSLR like canons 1Ds Mark III or nikons D3x.
homersimpson587 2 years ago 2
@homersimpson587 u should try the Oly E-3 for sure! I have it, and its for pros like me.
kennethugle 1 year ago
There is a difference in image quality between a 50mp Hass and a 4mp Nikon camera. Primarily in this case because the Hass has a much larger sensor than an FX or DX. Also those little compacts touting 12Mp are total crap when trying to make serious images as the sensors are very small. Sensor size and mega pixels within the sensor are relative. Stuff more pixels into a sensor and the more noise you start to get at high ISO, larger sensors with fair amount of pixels is best, like D700.

Megapixel Count does NOT matter.
(Megapixel Myth)
Megapixel doesn't affect image quality.
This means that an image created by a 4 megapixel Nikon DSLR has the same sharpness as an image from a Hasselblad 50 megapixel camera.
It's all marketing lies.
hihellocute 2 years ago
well what are the things that you should look for then?
lillen300 2 years ago
Haha, thats a bit extreme, being that no nikon has anywhere near the same sharpness of a hassy, but when making big prints, or doing a lot of post production, the more megapixels DO help, because with both of those things colors, and overall image quality gets worse.
timmyguy13 2 years ago
@hihellocute Perhaps for your needs. Those who require larger megapixel normally require it for large prints. It's all about printing and detail. So Megapixels do matter however it all depends on how large you want to view or print your work.

man. i thought that was some special small-diameter lens, the camera is that huge.
zanuha 2 years ago
i would personally recommend a photographer to get the d3 over the d3x. we are at a point where resolution doesn't matter and 12 megapixels is enough. Even if you weren't satisfied with 12mp you could resize an image in photoshop or various other softwares and still get sharp results.
obskure1 2 years ago

Sony sensor, no sensor auto cleaner, high price, heavy, even the d700 is still heavy although the same size of 5d m2 but still way heavy.
rustynasty143 2 years ago
"5% of photographers still choose canon cameras. I wonder why?"
Because back in the 80s Canon got on the autofocus train much faster and got all the pros to jump ship[ from Nikon (which was THE camera company for pros then) to Canon. Now both are just as good, but Nikon has never done anything so amazing that pros were going to dump 20 years of glass.
VenonnFang 2 years ago
well what camera should i choose when i get one?
lillen300 2 years ago
Doesn't matter, go to a camera store and use a canon and a nikon, whichever one feels better, get that one. I have Nikons, some of my friends have Canon, they both do the same thing.
VenonnFang 2 years ago
why not fujitsufilm or any other company?
lillen300 2 years ago
Most companies other than canon or nikon have no good upgrade path if you want to get a new body or some pro grade lenses.
VenonnFang 2 years ago
Exactly!! im tired of people say that one is better than the other!
But i think you should buy the same type of cameras your friends have that way they can teach you how to use it, and even maybe let you use some of their equipment (tips learned from kris krug haha)

LOL@ stupid fucking asians who thing they know everything about something because it's made in there continent.
We don't speak Japanese do we, therefore we have our own pronunciations for things, based on there spelling.
I've spoken to tons of Nikon reps, they pronounce it nigh-kon.
If there was a product made in the US and imported to Japan, you stupid fucks would definitely come up with your own way to pronounce it.
sooooo, go suck some cock? i think so.
USERX15 2 years ago

By the way am not asian
ausgregg 2 years ago 3
but who gives a shit, let people pronounce it the way they want.
USERX15 2 years ago 2
I can give you an instant example of the similar thing with the Nike brand. While in America its pronounced as "Nigh-kee" in Russia it is pronounced as "nighk". Why? Because it's more convenient considering the language differences.
