For whatever reason, it's kind of weird to me seeing/hearing someone playing a Rickenbacker on this song. Looks like they're having fun with it in any event.
I like both Television's original and REM's cover. Mike sings it so cool, and i like how Buck doesn't play the solo note for note but comes up with a pretty cool improv
I think Buck did a great job with the solo in this song. Watching the video, I see that he's totally riffing within the melody of the song. That's okay in my book. He doesn't have to be a virtruoso (hope I spelled this right...if not, you understand!) to make this song really rock. REM is a band that gets you with smart, melodic, songs. Michael knows how to touch an emotion by using pin-point accurate lyrics. That's what's great about the band. So stop comparing their work to others!
It's great to see Buck when he still rocked, and he did a great job here. This song really needs two guitars, though I understand why they would want to attempt it with just the one - it has a groove and a drive you can't resist.
This track, which opened Marquee Moon, made Television sound Punk, in a Ramones/Pistols kinda way. Amazing how this guitar riff sounds so loose in the hands of Buck (don't take offense anyone!) as opposed to Verlaine, a guitar genius.
Hey this is a fantastic post. During this REM era "See No Evil" popped up as an encore from time to time. I heard Michael introduce it around this time at Berkeley's Greek Theatre as "Here's the greatest rock song of all time." Many TV fans would humbly agree and the band does it justice. Peter even dispels the notion that he can't really jam!
It's a cover of the band Television's first seminal 1977 album "Marquee Moon," one of the most influential proto-punk records of all recorded time. That album helped inspire/launch a million guitar-based indie bands, including this one.
GREAT song by a great band, but damn, back then I had no idea that Stipe was gay. I should have just seen this... embarrassing.
BUT, this is worth buying and/or watching because of Peter's excellent performance on it! Nice!

Awesome. Does any video exist of the Charlotte show where they did this with the Minutemen?

I hate haters! Especially R.E.M. haters! Who are you to judge the greatest band of all time?

There's a lot of unnecessary hating going on here. 'Marquee Moon' is one of my favorite albums and I think this is great.

I wouldn't see they butchered it so much as turned it into an REM song circa 1985...

They had the right energy -- but Buck has chops for his own stuff only -- don't get me wrong, love the guy, just he's no master player.

Not really my thing...but hey.. I came and listened...so I'd like to recommend ALL of the Tom Waits at Rockpalast videos.
They are simply flabberghasting. Tom Waits at the height of his stage power.

the last time the Minutemen played together before D Boon died was on this song during REM's encore when they were touring with 'em.
REMchout 4 years ago
That's a pretty interesting (tho sad) piece of trivia. Thanks, man.

I saw REM in December 1985 with the Minuteman as an opening act and D. Boon died about a week later. Sad.
Michael had the same hair color that night.

Lucky...I have a tape of the Minutemen's last set...December 13 1985 - Park Center, Charlotte, NC

The show I saw was in Columbus Ohio...I believe December 10, 1985.
