Eddie Olcyzk continues to say things that make him sound like an idiot. And McDonough sure recovered fast. Also he hit the head with his tricep/bicep area not the elbow. Penalize the action not the result. If McDonough does not go down and hit was delivered by a player without priors the player would not have been ejected. Now they would because of the rules change but not then.
Cooke made no attempt to deliver a clean check, clearly and blatantly threw his elbow out directly at Ryan McDonagh's head. That's a major penalty regardless of who delivers the elbow, injury or not.

I have looked over both videos and based on my on ice experience as a lev 4 official and player and seeing the same things happen in amatuer games Chara's hit was no more than a rough. Cooke should be done for the year. NO playoffs!!

It would have been a game misconduct before the Chara hit and it would have been a suspension as well. The league's response was good for maybe a 1st or 2nd time offender. But for Cooke, he needs to be done. It's been one too many, he's been suspended 4 times in the past 3 seasons, and there's been more instances over those 3 seasons that he should have been suspended for. Hopefully Sauer or someone kills him next time they play

seen this hit on NHL On The Fly a couple nights ago and one of the guys on there said look at Matt Cooke's emotion after he hits him, and as he walks down the tunnel. There is not one look of remorse on his face. He has the same look on his face after he hits him and then he turns around as he walks down the tunnel. Just get him out of the league. YOur a fool and never played hockey if you compare Chara's hit to Cooke hit. I have looked over both videos and based on my on ice experience as a lev 4 official and player and seeing the same things happen in amatuer games Chara's hit was no more than a rough. It was an unfortunate coincidence that he hit Pacioretty at that spot on the ice but I witnessed an identical hit occur while coaching. What Cooke did was absolutely intent to injure. Cooke should be done for the year. NO playoffs!!

That is bush league right there, not to mention what he did to Savard and countless others. Put him down in the AHL where he belongs. Yes Cooke is an idiot and a dirty player, but he does actually contribute a lot to the Penguins. He is a high energy, physical player who can also score goals/make plays. So yes, it is a big loss. I do think it was the right call by the NHL an I have no idea why Cooke decides to throw cheap shots like this, but regardless it is still a big loss for the Pens.

Chudles76.. You have to understand the difference between being in a fight which is mutual and blind-siding someone in the head with your elbow. The reason Cooke was penalized so severely is because he is a repeat offender of the same thing over and over. He's a dirty player so the league is sending him the right message. And if you think throwing an elbow up to make sure you make contact with the head is "unintentional" then I have to laugh at you.

Hold up...Matt Cooke gets suspended for the rest of the year for almost unintentionally elbowing a guy in the face, whereas hockey players that get into fist fights on the rink for extended times get ten minutes in the penalty box? Not saying he shouldn't have been suspended for that, but the NHL needs to get a lot more consistent with the punishments it deals out.

@churdle76 fighting is part of the game. it helps cut things like this out of the game in a way. elbowing somebody in the noggin.... not so much part of the game. the nhl could not be more consistent on the punishment it hands out for fighting. its right there in the rule book - 5 min major.
if it were to be something like a bench clearing brawl... or sucker punching somebody, then the nhl would crack down on it more (unless sidney crosby is at fault...).

It would have been a game misconduct before the Chara hit and it would have been a suspension as well. I'm a penguins fan as much as the next, but there is no place in the NHL for malicious intent like that anymore. The age of enforcers is long gone and as far as I am concerned, Cooke got off easy considering the NHL is looking to make a BIG statement with these kinds of hits.
