@frankenangel - Thank you for your reply, accusing me of being a know-it-all and implying that YOU know it all. Quite YouTube of you. ;-) However, this is the early version as found on the It's Called A Heart 12" and Catching Up With that came out before Black Celeb, and as an assignment to prove this I want you to put Black Celeb on to compare. Note the lack of samples ("over & done with", etc.) in this early version and darker tone on Black Celeb. BTW: I was 17 when the song came out.
a few years ago we had "good vibrations" by the Beach Boys on a cd in the car, and right after it was done, the next song on the next cd was "fly on the Windscreen." and we laugh at the difference of mood. It was so sudden. lol
I think every group has its time and depeche mode since the late '90s have not gone to do something so special like this song and do not think they (without wilder) do it again.
The Best group ever! I will never forget seeing them in concert while in college at Florida State. Every album, song is a classic and I will listen to them until death! Thanks for everything DM especially the memories!
It's a unique track really: with it's estranging arrangement it captures the ' black celebration' mood probably more than any other piece. Amazingly strong still, and definitely - as with almost all of their work- way ahead of it's time.
Not a complaint, just a clarification: This is the early version that was on Catching Up With, not the one on the Black Celebration album (that's the "Final" version).
@thedamnmushroom For more clarification it was a b-side, and never released as a single, though the popularity of the song made a few devotees angsty...
Great post! My favorite song on my favorite album. Really captured what their new movement was about. They really expanded on the "It's Called a Heart" b-side and created something special. Thanks!
this was never on the black celebration album dude

Come to think of it, this version is off the It's Called A Heart single, which was then put on Catching Up With Depeche Mode. Truly, a classic song.

Should've been one of DM's greatest hits, but the first word of the song is "Death". So much of a better song than "But Not Tonight", IMO.

In case anyone didn't know, this song was use in the show Miami Vice, season 3 episode 7, "El Viejo", starring Willie Nelson.

solo con hacer esta canción, una banda para mi ya es la mejor del mundo, pero nadie más aparte de depeche podría haberlo hecho, son únicos
