It's simply a shifting of energy. A real punch starts with an intention, that intention then creates energy that you translate into the physically throwing a fist. Most people assume that the punch is the 1st step but it is in fact the 3rd step.

To me it makes sense if you became more senstive to step 1 and 2. You could develop an aproach to prevent step 3.

The attacker would think it was magic but really he's just telegraphing the punch.

I wonder if it works on people not attacking?

I took Tai Chi from Master Wang 17 years go. He is from Taiwan and was ranked 7th in the world then. Twice, Master Wang was able to send me flying without touching me. It was like being lifted by a wind and blown away. One gentleman was propelled into a wall and broke part way through. After that he always made sure there was a 'catcher'. Videos like this would be easy to fake, and for that reason do not do justice to Master Wang's skill. He lives in western Canada. We are lucky to have him.

I've met Wang Huijin and he was not able to do anything like these ling kong jin demonstrations with me. Nor were any of his students.

He is, however, superlatively skilled at regular (hands-on) tuishou.

All of these types of fellows that I've seen in the past have been shown to be full of crap. I've been in the presence of a so called Chi Master and there was nothing there, his students were'thrown" all over, and when it did nothing to me, I was told I wasn't in tune right... so the bad guy has to be in tune for it to work I guess. It's B.S.
