Sure, Jimbo can use AdSense, but most of the time you'll see popups that you can receive a virus from. My sister clicked an ad that gave her a virus (in Chrome) from Megaupload and we decided to never use it again. The same could happen to Wikipedia if they put ads on.

I asked him if it was his boat. It wasn't. He didn't have a boat. The money donated doesn't go to him. It goes to pay for servers and bandwidth. And I really like the fact that there are no ads. @petercoffin I see nothing wrong with directly asking individuals for donations. Wikipedia is a nonprofit organization, and likely soliciting donations from individuals is part of their business model, and as I understand it, is not that uncommon as nonprofits go.
