I wonder what the creators intended this ending to be perceived as. I never took this as much as "America, fuck yeah" -ending as more like "We became a paranoid military state, and you are a brainwashed tool that shouldn't trust even its own leadership, whooppefuckingdoo".

It means that Mason assassinated JFK. We also get a hint in the ending of the game (gameplay ending). You kill Dragovich and you say something like "you wanted me to kill my president" and Dragovich answers "You´re sure you didnt?". You see, it´s quite obvious that he is the killer of JFK in Black Ops.

And "Ascension" is a religious word. Google it and you´ll understand easly what it means in this context. ;)
