Shina knocked me out by chudan zuki (knocked the wind out of me ) in 1987 at the dojo in Ebisu. All the sensei's there had amazing control and power could absolutely kill with one blow if they desired to do so.
Cyb3rus, you made an excellent point. The problem with martial arts, especially in the U.S. is that it has been commercialized and promoted as sports. As a result, karatekas or athletes for that matter train for karate as a sport. Karate skills are developed through extensive training on kihon, kumte and kata and all of these elements must be trained without disregard on anyone of these elements. And as Cyb3rus stated, kumite is just one form of learning karate. Nice discussion guys/gals.
See comments my account site. This is a sport, karate is not a sport. Is this really karate? BTW, I am a JKA life member, started with the JKA in Japan.
@fredkarat In reality, karate is a martial art. Those who call it a sport are short sighted. Training for a sport was not the original way and training for a sport produces techniques and tactics that can not be considered karate. Karate is an Okinawan martial art. Get over it. A JKA LIFE MEMBER.
@fredkarat Being intelligent is something one can not help. Being in denial is. This is a game they call karate, nothing more. Yep, some of them can fight and some of them are bad. Some of them. Boxing produces the same, football does and soccer does. It is NOT a martial art and fooling yourself does not make it one. However, you WILL continue fooling yourself. Ijo!
@IEKUKATAKA Hi general Patton, everything what you're telling me i already know that for about 40 years... My first JKA teacher 40 years ago told me that the most of the people who practices martial arts feels about them self lesser than other people, so they do example karate to become somebody, dont forget the japs almost fucked al you're asses in Okinawa and ect.. Without the atomic bombs you all never could win...
I realize that these guys are following tournament rules. I have also met some JKA guys who fight in varioius tournaments and can easily adjust to different styles. I'm saying that the 'rules' produce bad habbits. If someone would ONLY train for JKA competitions, he/she would be spending more time reinforcing bad habbits. Look at the recent world UFC Champ - Machida. He started out in point karate, and worked his way htrough ranks of Karate and MMA.
Dilbertr: My days of barfighting are long over. I'm sure some of these guys can KO someone with one hit. But it is important not to get overconfident on that either. Many blackbets found out the hard way that there is no such thing as a 'one punch kill.' UFC is a good example of how much punishment a person can take with full blown punches and kicks to face/head and still keep standing. I'm sure these guys are tough, but they have MANY bad habbits as far as fighting.
The Bad habits you see are more a cause of the rules of the match than anything. Yes, they throw usually throw one punch and then stop, that's how they rules of JKA work, so that's how they fight in tournaments. It allows those with better technique to succeed, which is a nice principle. If you think they would fight anything like this in real life, that's a great misunderstanding.
That said, these guys are scary as shit. Shiina sensei especially is like some kind of Gorilla Karate master
This JKA looks like a sport where guys try NOT to fight rather than actually go after their apponents. I think the masters are at fault instilling this crazy believe of one punch/one kill. SO you have two guys who just stand there. Its pathetic
It isn't just about waling on each other. If you watch ufc you'll notice many times one hit creates the opening that unleashes a barrage of hits. In a bar, I take you out with one hard hit before your buddies can join in. Game over.
Esta lucha es un ejemplo para los universitarios karatekas de hoy, que deportivamente no hacen nada limpio...no pareciera karate lo que hoy se pelea...esto es limpio, artístico y fuerte. Karate al 100%
OMG the last gyaku zuki from Yokomichi was SO fast! Perfect timing and distance

what nice discussion...no comments like "WING CHUN KILLS U MOTHERF..." by now :-)
(sry if there is a wc guy out there reading this)
i think most people forget that kumite isonly a teaching methode for speed, acuracy and concentration.
as long as u train only for kumite/kata competitions ull never learn karate.

Hahaha guys like Shiina or Yahara would rip Machida in half. Machida has NO power compared other real strong JKA karatekas.

ALL and I mean ALL JKA Blackbelts back then were badass. Now there are many pansy JKA blackbelts due to the watered down standards.
