  • Beautiful music - simply..

  • I have the score..., give me some e-mail and I will try to send them to you :o)

  • beautiful, beautiful indeed.

  • Wonderful voice! Very beautifully sung! Bravo!

  • Very interesting ... thank you for posting this! I always find Lesne´s voice and style hauntingly individual. And Caldara ist great!

  • I feel I bit like Pope translating the Illiad (certainly in the style)

I hope to translate more in the next few days...

    hope this (starts) to help

bear in mind I am neither English nor Italian... haha. But the translation is accurate... Flavio, feel free to participate if you are around

    now back to work

    xx

  • First recitative translation:

'Do suffer, my dear Alcinus (?)

    the rigours of unavoidable grief.

For a man cannot reach true joy

    lest he endures some hardships

    along the way.

  • well, done flavio!!!

but surely among thorns FLOWERS are hidden, not BOYS!!! LOL

i say this in good fun

love to civileso (for posting) and to you

  • i can definitely hear 'MENZOGNERO' in the missing phrase of the second recitative... but cannot make up the first words!

    :-)

  • can i point out a couple of mistakes?

    amor sempre nasconde

i suoi FIOR' fra le spine

    also..

    maybe

    Che MISERE le dolcezze

ed un DEBOL contento han per confine?

    (just trying...)

    :-)

  • A really elegant sounding piece and very dramatic. It would be interesting to know what is being sung.

  • Non potrai dir mai, no,

    che Dori t'ingannò.

    Così non possa anch'io

    Caro mai dir di te!

    Credimi che se mai

    geloso tu sarai

    offendi l'amor mio, (caro!)

    fai torto alla mia fe'!

  • Thank you very much for this, Flavio. It must have taken a lot of time. I had sent to Eser my version of this second aria (almost a year ago), but I had two wrong words (I realise it now that you've found them). Too bad about the missing words, but it's Lesne's fault, hehe. ;)

  • No problem ;) Yes, I agree ;) Hehe...

    Wow, what beautiful music! :)

  • Thank you SO much.

  • Dolce pur d'amor l'affanno

    Se compagno del tormento

    Il contento viene ancor.

    Se le pene unite vanno

con la speme e con l'affetto,

    il diletto è poi maggior.

    ***

  • 1st part Soffri mio caro Alcino Qualche rigor d'inevitabil pena! Ad un vero gioir Non si può giunger mai Senza incontrar per via qualche martire. Amor sempre nasconde i suoi figliol fra le spine Ma son cari gli affanni Che **** alle dolcezze Ed un ***** contento han per confine.
  • So, here it is :)

Only a couple of words I was really not able to figure out. I am Italian but... sometimes Gérard is Gérard ;)

  • Ooooh! One piece I loved to hear when I was a teenager !:)

  • This cantata is pure delight! And Lesne is at his best. I've been hunting for the text for some loong time. You can tell by the video description and the old comments by me and MehdiCaps on this video. Do you have the complete text for this cantata? I'd be indebted to you if you could post it here or send it via YT message.

  • He's really at his best here :) I was mesmerized by this when I was 12... when I decided to be a counter ;)

Wow, I am realizing now that the first aria has the same text as Handel's "Dolce pur d'amor l'affanno"...

  • Will try to take the text down when I have more time this week :) It won't be too hard :)

    Love,

    Fla

  • Thank you very much! I'll make sure to return the favor. Take care.

  • Yes, it does. A Paolo Rolli text that Handel also set, apparently. And the only part I could find after long searches, the rest is different. That's why the first aria is the only part I posted on the description with the text and translation.

  • I would ove to hear him in a duet with Andreas Scholl! Both are terrific.

  • mistrzostwo świata!!!!!

  • Gérard Lesne is the best countertenor in the world. This cantata made me come to the baroque. Thank you Gérard.

  • How annoying they would have Antonio Caldara on YouTube but no Adalbert Gyrowetz. Memory is so incosistent!

  • The author of Händel's "Dolc'è pur d'amor l'affanno" is possibly Paolo Antonio Rolli. Händel composed a first version, for alto (HWV.109a), in 1717-18, and later a second version, for soprano (HWV.109b). But I don't think it's the same text.

  • Händel's cantata is composed of: 1) Aria "Dolc'è pur d'amor l'affanno", 2) Recitativo "Il viver sempre in pene stanca", 3) Aria "Se più non t'amo, non ti doler". Caldara's is composed of: 1) Recitativo "Soffri, mio caro Alcino", 2) Aria "Dolce è pur d'amor l'affanno", 3) Recitativo "Se mai ti nasce in mente", 4) Aria "Non potrai dir mai, nò". The same title for the two arias could be a coincidence.

  • It's the same text, actually. I've e-mailed it to you, Eser.

  • Thanks a lot! I thought so. At least the aria Dolc'e pur d'amor l'affanno is. The rest are different.

  • Yes, they only have that aria in common, but it's the main part of Caldara's cantata.

I didn't find anything about the other parts. All I can say is that the 3rd line of the 2nd aria is "Così non posso anch'io", and that a Google search on those words doesn't give anything. I wish I was able to understand Italian better. ;)

  • I know, it is so frustrating. If I learn Italian, this cantata is responsible for it, haha!
