  • Love it Love it! The end is amazingly uplifting

  • Two Thumbs Up

  • best band in my life

  • Why disable ratings? Thumbs up anyways!

  • The rumours were as follows: They released their 1st album (which sounded a LOT like the Beatles psych era stuff), a few years after the Beatles broke up; a time when there were already massive rumours about a Beatles reunion. The albums had NO writing credits other than Klaatu and there was never any mention of who was in the band until the 4th & 5th albums and, they were all released in America on The Beatles' parent label, Capitol Records. As a BIG Beatles fan, what would YOU think it was?

  • @RedVynil The fifth album (Magentalane) wasn't released in America until much later.

  • @ifhgsfj That's entirely possible. I don't have a hard copy of it, all I have is a CD re-issue.

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms is absolutely right. As a matter of fact, having listened to the whole Hope album, I now feel like listening to Abbey Road.

  • @jdmelo2112

I can't stand anything off that album except for the song "Hope".

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms is absolutely right. As a matter of fact, I'm going to listen to "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" right now.

  • George..sp.

  • If anything this sounds like Geroge not John.

  • @Johnnywhamo

    George type song.

  • @ManhattanMusician Indeed, Peace!

  • I loved their first album. The "Hope" album I never got into...I thought it was way too poppy and forced. Boy, I was wrong. After years not hearing it...I play it almost daily. It is a fantastic album in every way.

  • This song reminds me of "Something", by the Beatles

  • The song that saved my life. Long story. GREAT song.

  • Has anyone notice the one animal on all the albums?

  • @selcincel Yes, it's a field mouse, but I'm not so sure it appears on their fifth album, I'll have to check. I wonder if anyone has also noticed the "mouse squeak" at the very end of the first album and the very beginning of the second! Had it not appeared at the start of the second album, I would've thought it was just a studio blunder on the first album.

  • @RedVynil The last album, Magentalane, has a mouse reference on the front cover. If you look closely near the staircase of the boat, you can see the railing pegs have mouse heads. It's kind of hard to explain, but look near the railings of the boat.

  • @STEALL1997 I'll have to whip it out and have a butchers.

  • No, it does sound a bit like Harrison.

  • Beach Boys??? Why not throw Roy Orbison in the mix as well!! Just kidding! ;)There were rumors and secrecy surrounding Klaatu and this LP's release, implying there was direct, but anonymous, involvement by some ex-Beatles with this project. This was most likely wishful thinking on the part of some Beatles fans.....Yet, to even draw the comparison is a great tribute to the Canadian band, KLAATU. This album stands among the best rock has produced!!!

  • @MrCrosstiewalker ......More likely "wishful thinking on the part of some" Klaatu fans.

  • sounds more like the beachboys with pink floyd

  • @ShamzStarr If you say so!!!! Sounds more like GWAR covering a Captain Beefheart song, or Frank Zappa doing Mitch Miller, maybe even the Roto Rooter Goodtime Christmas Band doing Spike Jones..

  • This sounds quite like a mash-up band consisting of the Rutles (they're the most famous Beatles mock-up, and looks like Klaatu is pretty close) with Pink Floyd.

  • The best album of all klaatu records.

  • This band are awesome.

  • Klaatu's music reminds me of George Harrison's Beatle influence!!

  • Comment removed

  • @1FineYoungCannibal Wasn't that a song by Nirvana?? Or do you mean "Something" by the Beatles.

  • Comment removed

  • @mysterymac38 no, dearest.....

  • Sounds more close to ELO than me Beatles himself c'mon the Beatles are unreachables

  • Klaatu fans: there is great compilation cd + insert: "Klaatu - Sun Set 1973-1981" BLR-CD-2515

    - distributed by Bullseye Records of Canada 180 Station St,. suite 53, Ajax ON, L1S1R9 Canada

  • Great number. Ironically, this came out at the same time ELO's Out of the Blue was released. The similarities are eerie.

  • They sound like the Beatles in a round about way. They remind me a little of 1970's McCartney, though.

  • @acrovader Agreed.

  • i m glad about the great responces to Klaatu and if i may an album from 1968, a group from canada called the collecters had an album way ahead of it s time. The album is called WHAT IS LOVE BY The Collecters ,side 2 is 1 song connected into a story called What is love suite, it has 5 different music styles check it out ahead of it s time, amazing mix

  • @SuperDrummer2012 Have it, didnt think it was all that great. Side note: someone from The Collectors started America.

  • Hope is a great concept album that is more relevant today then it was when it was first recorded.

    So Said the Lighthouse Keeper

"I am the very loneliest of all creatures in the universe

Indeed I am an epitaph to man

For having witnessed mass destruction like you've never dreamed and worse

I fear I shall bear witness once again"

The last line is referring to earth.

  • @dwaldick The whole Politzania suite (the last 3/4 of the album) is basically referring to Earth!

  • Well the whole Beatles thing was do to the no names on the records and the amazing harmonies not the similarities so much as the influences and where the Beatles may have been if they where still doing it

  • check this version, very creative... watch?v=ocHmwICKWWA&feature=related

  • My dad introduced me to this album, and thereby this band. He bought a brand new, completely mint LP for fifty cents at a book sale in a mall. I'd say that's the best fifty cents he ever spent.

  • All I know it was a pleasure to find this band with some really great songs....Wouldnt doubt the Beatles listened to klaatu. Still play these songs on those long car rides...

  • I don't understand why people saying Klaatu sounds like the Beatles get upset---they DO sound like the Beatles. Anyone with ears can hear the similarities and, yes, the rumours abounded that it WAS actually the Beatles.

Their music is great. Klaatu is an underrated and very talented band which is sad.

  • i dont get why you pro-klaatu guys are denying that klaatu and the beatles sound alike, and even bashing the beatles. without the beatles, there would've been no klaatu. its natural to say, "this sounds sort of like that" and in no way is an insult, so grow up and just enjoy the music instead of fighting for its cause

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms I was a Beatles fan before I was a Klaatu fan. When Klaatu first came out I didn't hear the rumor that they were the Beatles nor did I think that Klaatu sounded like the Beatles. After the rumor I could kind of hear what people were talking about because Klaatu does at time sound British and does like the Beatles often use orchestration, but then so too does ELO, which actually was influenced directly by the Beatles without my ever thinking ELO really sounded like the Beatles

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms I'm still a Beatles fan (as well as a Klaatu fan and an ELO fan) and have nothing bad to say about the Beatles. :-)

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms John and Maca as well as Buddy and Elvis were products of a magical window in time. - Tempus Fugit

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms cork it..........

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms cork it..if comparison, then perhaps 10cc.....otherwise, perhaps you should simply cork it as the Beat. never did intelligent sci-fi, but stayed stuck in whimsy, ochee dochee? ochee dochee...........regards, p.

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms

Interesting. Been listening to Klaatu for 33 years and never thought they sounded like the Beatles. Still don't. Perhaps a little bit, but then one could say that about a lot of bands.

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms Who's denying it. For a while we thought it might be a few of the Beatles.. but in the end, it wasn't. This band is so awesome in and of themselves..

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms

Vocalist sounds like John Lennon, the organ sounds like Strawberry Fields-organ, The guitarist sounds like George Harrison, the song and the arrangement sounds like The Beatles with George Martin. (Can't hear Paul and Ringo here..) . Great band, this Klaatu.

  • @Symphosia the voice is similar to paul Mc Cartney

  • @amosfunk

    Not even close.

  • @ManhattanMusician the Style is very similar to the Beatles,,,,,during those years

  • @amosfunk

The Hope song is. I don't get why some people say none of their music sounds like the Beatles.

Knee deep in love, sounds like Bread's "Everything I own"

  • @amosfunk You MUST be joking!!!! You've flipped your Beatle wig 3 sizes too small!! Terry Draper sounds more like George than ANY of the other Beatles!

  • @Symphosia Vocals sounds like George, the keyboard sounds like the MELLOTRON in Strawberry Fields.

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms I don't hear any beatles at all in Klaatu's music.

  • @WaxHeadroom

Then you've never listened to The Beatles. The influences are so friggen obvious.

  • @WaxHeadroom "Sub-Rosa Subway"...McCartney all the way.....

  • @boekhour

klaatu plays in a leak? and klaatu would probably reprimand you for saying that. klaatu were independent music-makers, but you can not deny their beatles influence and klaatu probably respects them as their masters

  • i disagree, they formed around the same time and yes there are similarities, but i doubt there is much in the way of influence present as the beatles were a pop group..klaatu more deliberately shyed away from what was considered popular. personally i think klaatu far exceed the beatles in ability and originality..they were different which is why they were never noticed such as the beatles, not because they were inferior by any means

  • @Dladjaa

Dladjaa, I've never heard of a musical group being less popular due to them being different. I'd assume the opposite.

  • @Dladjaa

The Beatles and Klaatu didn't form around the same time. Klaatu's first album came out in 1976. The Beatles' first album came out in 1963.

  • @Dladjaa

    Briljant observations

  • Someone just brought this band to my attention. WOW! I love them. I have been listening to their songs all mornings. Thank you soooo much for posting their material! Awesome!

  • This sounds like George Harrison and John Lennon. It's definitely the Beatles sound. Even the lyrics are in their style. The Beatles' sound was classic.

  • I remember this music very well. In the seventies there was a rumour that Klaatu was the secret new Beatles. They never gave concerts, records were very scarce, etc. All very mysterious..... Especially Hope is the Beatles-sound. (wow-wow-wow-yeahhhhh).

    Great music

  • It smells like Something performed by The Beatles

  • Same here. This song has inspired me and given me solace during troubled times since the first day I heard it some 30 years ago.

  • I love this song. I loved it 30 odd years ago and I still love it. Now that's the mark of a great song!

  • anyone who is so anal to suggest my spelling mistakes in any comment ..............well baaaaaaaaaaaaaaa baaaaaaa baaaaaaaaaa

    whats your point?

  • reading your comments and insults throughout this thread, and you have the balls to suggest that someone is anal? Who the f do you think you are? Oh I know.., .a little twit that is only capable of getting tough in a message forum.

  • galileo.......what insults? I only get tired of the Beatles comparisons. They are what brought this band down. In no way did I make personal insulting comments like you do. So go Klaatu yourself!

  • by the way ...who the f do you think you are?

  • wish everyone would get off the beetle comparisons already, 30 years and still on that crap.

  • What's funniest about the Beatles comparison is that countless musicians were attempting to emulate some aspect of the Beatles sound and/or style at that time and it continues to this day. They were evolutionary.

I think that Klaatu had a distinctive style and creative approach, not to mention their production values were unparalleled for that time period.

  • yesssss man. Look at every group that has been emulated, where is the big controversy? But try and emulate the Beatles in any way and you are ortisized. This band is as original as the Beatles were. Pleases give them a freaking break already.

  • cheers man dig your stuff. bien suerte!!

  • Exactly; couldn't agree more. Production was ahead of it's time and their music took me away on a cloud without any mind altering substances(well, most of the time...)

  • Holy shit!! I had this album,my x has it now and yes more than a slight ripoff of the beatles but I still like it.

  • Yes, I agree that some of their songs sound like the Beatles, but to infer that it was an intentional ripoff of them is unfair. Listen to their entire repetoire and I think you will agree they are a great band that stands on their own. I wish people would stop the beatles thing and give them the credit they deserve.

  • @enialbsitruc Claiming that they sounded so close to The Beatles IS giving them the credit they deserve!! If someone told me that my band sounded exactly like The Beatles, even though I wasn't trying to make it so, I'd be VERY flattered and consider it a GREAT credit to my music!!

  • Easily Canada's best prog rock band. Too bad some idiot DJ screwed up their careers by starting the rumor that they were secretly the Beatles. What nonsense! Draper, Long and Woloschuk rule!

All their albums are amazing, except the crappy Endangered Species album. Don't know what happened there...

  • that was a venture by an American record company. it was a failure because the company did everything, rather than giving Klaatu the room they needed.

  • @JediMagnusDelcarte Daffodil, their home-base label, was a Candian label. They recorded a single or two on it before Capitol released any of their albums here.

  • @enialbsitruc "Howl At The Moon" was a GREAT song!! And "All Good Things" always makes me cry because I played it the day my dog died and it ALWAYS reminds me of her!! I haven't heard the 5th album enough to comment, but, maybe that's the comment there: had it been a great album, I would've played it a lot more.

  • who sings the lead to this song?!?

  • @STEALL1997 Terry Draper. About 15 years ago, he put out a solo album but the other two members of Klaatu helped out on a couple of the songs.

  • @RedVynil It's nice to see someone who is giving people the right idea on Klaatu, but I found out after a while that the lead singer and writer of Hope is John Woloschuk.

  • @STEALL1997 Thanks! However, I would doubt it's John, because, as I've said here, I have Terry's solo album and his vocals are the same as the ones on "Hope". Terry's the one that sounds like George Harrison.

  • @RedVynil Yeah, it's just funny because people have told me it was everyone from John, Terry, and even Dee Long. But yeah, Terry and John both have Beatlish voices.

  • @STEALL1997 Well, until John does a solo album & I can compare his solo voice to the one in "Hope", I HAVE to stick to my guns that it's Terry on "Hope". I'm usually pretty good with voices! For instance, I can tell the difference between the Joe Aleski-voiced Daffy Duck & the Mel Blanc, even lthough both are extremely similar. Now, in one instance, there's a supposed Beatles song that, until I can actually get a MUCH cleaner copy, I HAVE to assume it IS them, althoiugh I'm told it's not.

  • In the seventies there were tremendous rumors that Klaatu really WAS the Beatles in disguise. Rumor had it that they were secretly at work at a new album. This was never substantiated and PROBABLY untrue. Still it was fun then.

  • Not probably untrue, it WAS untrue. And the rumor ruined their music careers.

  • I stand corrected. It is a shame that it hurt Klaatu, they had a nice sound that should have taken them far.

  • @bamai59 What hurt them was when they STOPPED sounding like The Beatles. Their last two albums weren't all that spectacular BECAUSE they changed their sound so drastically.

  • Yeah, and the bass sound like Paul, too. Not only the player, but the same tone. Astounding. Most who like this band would also dig 'Big Star'.

  • God... the lead vocal sounds so much like George Harrison ....

  • It does, and what about that slide guitar! Very George Harrison.

  • STOP IT!!!!

  • I haven't heard this in 30+ years! Forgot how good these guys are. Terrific stuff.

  • This brings back memories...lol. What a great song.

  • I love it since I buyed the LP in 1978. What a great Song, what a wonderful great Guitar Solo!!!!!

  • The Beatles and Klaatu!! The Best bands!!

  • What a Great Song... It reminds me John lennon's voice so i can figure out singing this song in the 70's....

  • A nice collection of Klaatu songs at last...Sweet

  • "Hope" is one of the most beautiful albums ever made. Complete pleasure from beginning to end. The "Sunset" CD gives you the whole orchestral version of the album. Give that version a listen and see if you don't have a lump in your throat by the time the title track ends.

  • Thank you so much!! I LOVE Klaatu!! EXCITED to see them on You Tube!!

  • What a song...

  • What a song... [2]

  • What a song.....
