I first saw Stray in a pub in London early seventies. Then next I think Northampton. About 20 years ago I was loading amps and doing the occasional lighting for Del. (Lock Stock and Barrel, The Killer B's days) I can remember him telling me that Iron Maiden had covered one of his songs, so I got to see them for free at the Pitz in Milton Keynes. ( they were going by the name Holy Joe and the Smokers. ) I have yet to see his new band The Devils. Someone said that they are a bit Country Blues. : {
Saw Stray loads of times in 71/72, quite often at the old Farx Club in Potters Bar. always loud, always great to idiot dance to, and my ears are still ringing from the exploding dustbin they used to ignite towards the end of the set.
I remember Stray as a very young bunch of lads who played very loud, set off loads of flashes and bangs and covered Hawkwind numbers. They used to play the pubs around East London where I hung out- they weren't as loud as Slade, though, we used to be able to listen to the whole of a Slade gig outside, which was just as well, because we hadn't any dosh to get in as any money we had was invested in OTHER THINGS.
I saw Stray many times from 1970 onwards and never heard them play a single Hawkwind number. Both of them released their first LPs at approximately the same time in 1970. Are you sure you are not confusing them with another band?
