Michael Mann always picks interesting music for his movies and tv shows.Miami Vice always had trippy tunes and so did Heat.Cool styles in Manhunter too.Always loved this soundtrack
@mplumridge220859 Could not agree with you more, Mann is awesome, and picks wonderful musicians to help tell his stories. I don't know why, but this song, and the songs from Thief are so powerful, they speak volumes, and have no vocals...so internal..this song makes my heart ache...like i am losing my girl to the killer, like my son is in danger.. i am running to them both...amazing the power of music. Thanks.
"You know that's the Jacobi's cat. Doggie doesn't have a collar, but you know it's the Leeds' dog.
And you know you need the bolt cutter and every other God damned thing... because it's all about seeing with you, isn't it? Your primary sensory intake, that makes your dream live, is seeing.
I got the original soundtrack CD via the mail last week; it's awesome. A cool, moody, calming, atmospheric 80s classic. Next soundtrack: Heat. Go ebay!
Crawford, "Films of the families in document storage" The Leeds film, Gateway Labs St. Louis, Mo, Will, "the Jacoby label will say the same", Crawford, "No, Bob's Photo Store Birmingham", Will, "stores send them out, peel the top label back, Crawford,"is there a label underneath? Will, "it does doesn't it"...the pinnacle of this music plays as Will places his hand on the window...I found you my man, one of my favorite cinema moments.
I saw this in 1986 when it first came out, I was captivated then and now 25 years later still am, the soundtrack is priceless. I have the Director's cut DVD and the end is kinda cool since it shows Will going to the "next" family's house, after he shoots Dollarhyde with those Glaser Safety Slugs, just to make sure they are ok. I am sincerely grateful to all of the awesome comments about this film. I am and will always be a huge fan of Michael Mann. Miami Vice is still a favorite.
This piece of music is so motivating. You just don't hear this in movies these days, and I don't mean the awesome 80's style, but atmospheric build that really hits the soul of the character and the audience. There are so many layers to this track, just as there are so many layers to Will Graham.
that's because it's a Michael Mann film-it's the way he practices his craft, it's his signiture. The music reaches deep inside of you and grabs you, or it kinda sneaks up on you
that's because it's a Michael Mann film-it's the way he practices his craft, it's his signiture. The music reaches deep inside of you and grabs you, or it kinda sneaks up on you.
As far as Will Graham: William Peterson is a first rate actor, not to mention the films' cast that includes veteran actor Dennis Farina and others.
I also want to know who are the five people who disliked this? What is there to dislike? This is the only song from the movie I couldn't buy on itunes.
They should remake this movie with William Peterson....I like Ed Norton but he wasen't even close..and Anthony Hopkins plays Hannibal Lector good to those who have not seen Brian Cox in Manhunter.. And tripswitch 1000, u are extremely right about the scene when Will Graham makes the connection..the stunned look on his face with the song rising in the background. IMO just that scene alone blasts all the other remakes put together...The movie even mentioned Nynhydren ..a chemical in forensics.
@baphochrist Indeed. I'm also happy to say that both songs make me think of transitions between happiness and somberness. Both songs are just incredibly powerful!
Your primary sensory intake - that makes you dream live - is seeing. Mirrors... reflections... images... You've seen these films! Haven't you, my man?
I could easily picture Sonny Crockett looking pensively into the camera on a Miami Vice re-run set to this music. For an even better version of this piece, check YouTube for "Confrontation" from the movie "Thief"--way better, trust me. Pink Floyd's "comfortably Numb" even beats that IMHO.
Wil Graham making "the connection" between the killings and the films, with this track slowly rising in the background, has to be one of the most powerful scenes in cinema history. I could (and have) watched it so many times.
@Tripswitch1000 that is what is so brilliant about this piece of music...it escalates and crescendos simultaneously with Graham's discovery...this is what music scoring is about! I am still mesmerized every time I see it
@Tripswitch1000 Yeah, that's easily my favourite moment in the film, the fact that it's just one long camera shot of Will Petersen the whole way through makes it even better.
Respect SimonCloud I really dont want to spend that amount on soundtrack but then again how much do I want/need it. I think its inevitable.......Amazon here we come! Cheers!
I NEED this films soundtrack! Where and how much! Someone do me a favour! Give me a shout let me know. I would be extremely grateful! Michael Mann films are superb! Not just cinematically but musically near on perfection, bring on Manhunter soundtrack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by the way this is no porno music....its meant to make the scene of the movie ....intense. i guess if you wack off to this it might be intenese for you you perv
It's great when everything just falls into place and you realize along with the lead character at the exact same time that he must have seen the tapes. Just as this awesome music starts playing in the background.
I love reading all this this stuff and it's great to hear so many like minded people. I think i must have listened to this 30 times in a row now.
Simply one of the best scenes ever, the realisation on his face when he finally gets it. It really is just truely stunning that scene.
I've been listening to lot of 80s soundtarcks over the last few days. Not as good a flim but Dune has some beautiful tracks on it. Type in Soundtrack Paul meets Chani . Menacingly atmospheric toobut just so wonderful.

Superb. I looked for a long time to find this soundtrack. Michael Mann is so good at the macho L.A man style story and he has a beautiful signature silver blue light in which he colors his pictures. Wonderful cast but particularly actor Brian Cox who is so refined in his work here - absolutely great, great great. Thank you for posting!
@HitchHikersBlues whatever farrell sucks....i am 100 pct irish and thought he was horrible. he is only good in a few movies...very few. also i cannot believe michael mann did this movie. his music along with his directing is usually very intense that goes along with the shot. i guess the guy he used for manhunter and miami vice series was busy. what a disservice to his 80's creation
Just thinking the same thing after Sundance aired Manhunter a couple nights ago. Even the ending at the beach with the freeze frame and "Michael Mann" pop up! The last song is a bit misused, but this overall soundtrack is awesome.
This movie hit the spot, it had it all, amazing photography, coolest soundtrack, masterful performances [esp; tom noonan] and riveting storyline, Michael Mann is in a league of his own at matching music with film to create the perfect atmosphere.

This movie is one giant episode of Miami Vice for the big screen. Which is a good thing. This score even sounds similar to Jan Hammer
