  • And as the years go by

She will grow old and die

The roses in her garden fade away

Not one left for her grave

Not a rose for Emily so damn cruel :(

  • At first, I thought, "A rose for Emily? What a pleasant sounding song!" I listened to it, admiring the upbeat music, then heard the lyrics. Not exactly the most positive , though it does reflect my life thus far ;P

  • @emfilomena It's based on a creepy short story by William Faulkner lol.

  • @victoriaenciso I dont see that song a creepy, only that a woman is clinging to whatever she has, unwilling to accept that it has left her.

  • @Valdrag Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I guess ~

  • Read the story.. You'll sleep fine for the first night. You only understand the plot the day after. Then, no more sleep for you.

  • Such a ridiculously sad song.

  • @loganarchermusic Read the story if you think this is sad.

  • nicegs to see young people like the old things like we did. The zombies are great

  • Any band that bases a song off of a William Faulkner short story is fantastic!

  • @WGSO1894 Very true.

Note: does not apply to the band As I Lay Dying :). Not a very good metal band.

  • Hey my name is Emily! My poor roses! Its actually really weird because a couple of days ago I drew a red rose!

  • see emily play

  • amazing sounds

  • Im doing a literature paper on the story of a rose for emily and I stumbled upon this. What a beautiful song indeed, and if you havent yet you should read the story in order to understand this song a littile bit more (:

  • @lolme121 0.0 who's your teachers name?

  • This album is ridiculous in it's beauty. Who would not love the Zombies? Seriously?

  • die*

  • I want to be Emily

  • which cd issue is this from

  • To truly understand the meaning of this song.. Read the story by William Faulkner. Good Story. You will understand what "how she keeps her pride."

  • this is vintage early sixties....what makes you think it came from the eighties...?

  • I think this band is underrated.....

  • @REDtwotwotwo that is a foregone conclusion :)

  • Listening to this song makes me think how great the 80s were regarding music and gardening

  • @thisisnotzimbabwe Not exactly in the 80s, more in 1968...

  • I'm 8 months old, I hate today's music and I love the Zombies! Please like my ridiculous comment!

  • @reginaldperiwinkle I like your ridiculous comment, Reginald!!

  • Is this song based on the poem?

  • @hobbitonman not a poem, a short story by william faulkner a rose for emily

  • @adventcheese I read it awhile ago I don't know why I thought it was a poem.

  • wow what a damm beatiful song, hearing this now i know i was born in the wrong decade... much love :)

  • Beautiful!

  • The first time I've listened to Odessey and Oracle, it was a shock. I still think it is one of the greastest masterpieces of pop music.

  • For my ap lit class we had to read the story and it was really weird. It was good though.

  • This is just about the saddest song I've ever heard.

  • Im 16 and I just discovered the Zombies. What the hell made this good shit disappear??

  • @mockingbird1006 The 80's.

  • @mockingbird1006 illuminati motherfucka

  • @mockingbird1006

Nixon, Reagan, and LBJ cracking down on the recreational use of drugs.

  • @mockingbird1006 They've not gone. ^_^ I'm going to see them in concert tonight.

  • @mockingbird1006 to answer your question: in a word "indifference".

  • @mockingbird1006 Yes!! A friend told me about them, but nobody else seems to know about this great band!!

  • @mockingbird1006 Still touring and still excellent. Go and see them - though you will be the youngest in the audience by miles!

  • sequel to "See Emily Play" by Pink Floyd? lol both great psych-pop tunes.

  • @Sylphqueen1968 Whats the diffeence between a baby and a teddy bear??

  • @steelfright don't have the slightest comprehension of what you mean!

  • @Sylphqueen1968 Teddy bears don't cry when you stuff them.

  • @oxXBeautifulGirlXxo yeah, and all the Emily-songs out there are always so sad:( beautiful songs all of them, but it would be nice not to day unhappy for once.

  • We read the short storie 'A Rose for Emily' in my reading class. One sick story. When the discovered Homer's body, I screamed. In class. Sick sick story. And then for our project we all wrote things adding or chaning the original story. I wrote about her servant's secret life.

  • im such a fan of the Zombies they made amazing music "tell her no" "Summertime" "time of the Season" Love this group!! : ( Shame Artists dont make real music no more

  • @01thrilla God, the comments about music not being "real" anymore make me pull my hair out. Such pretentious nonsense. There is amazing music being made all the time.

  • @namtap Absolutely, there is great music being made today, but you have to really search for it. It won't be found on the radio.

  • @namtap You're right! Great music IS being made all the time. All music is the child of its Time and there will be people years from now, waxing just as nostalgic as we oldies do about this music.

  • My name is Emily, and though this song is dreadfully depressing and heartbreaking, I love the tune. I'm not sure I'll ever find someone to bring me a rose, but I don't need them to. I have my dreams, and I understand this.

So, I look forward to this life of mine, and will greet death with open arms when it's my turn. :)

  • This devastates so beautifully, with classical eloquence. Now I need a double-shot of espresso while listening to Little Richard to bring me out of it - haha. Seriously, though, a truly gorgeous tune. Regards, '62 Mathew St. (Total Retro Rock)

  • I am Emily.... all of my roses have faded.... pride is all that is left.... but it is fading and pain is all I ever seem to feel..... this song speaks to me...... It is me.....

  • Any relation with Faulkner's short story?

  • @lucasgrosso1977 yes there is a connection with that story, actually the whole album has to do with some stories somewhere

  • @eddyiniguez that short story is fucked up tho big time

faulkner was a sick individual lol

  • @jonezwashere i`m agree with that love the narrative

  • @proggoth my kitten GigGi jumped out a freeway flyer vehicle window yesterday. This song reminds me to appreciate whatever we need in that moment. Yeah..something like that?

  • my name is emily(:

  • Polskich użytkowników YT, poszukujących więcej wiedzy o The Zombies, zapraszam: cogra.pl/index.php/szacun/the-zombies-odeseja-melancholijna/

  • Should get together with The Beatles and made: A Rose for Emily Rigby.

  • @bumperu Misery loves company

  • classic album...oh my daughter is called emily...

  • Ha my name is Emily

  • @emilymarseilles theyre prob not talking about you

  • @ReeferRevolution yeah obviously!

I'm not retarded this song is probably older than my grandpa so how could it be about me. && I never said it was about me.

  • @Theowest A song cannot be gay, not possible. And you should at least appreciate all forms of music for what they are. And I am I guy and I am a teenager who listens to all forms of music because I can appreciate all music for what it is

  • if you stare at the picture it kinda moves in a wavy thing...awesome song

  • We recently read the story A Rose For Emily by Faulkner in my english class... eerie shit.

  • @LadyInTheRadiatorrr haha same here

  • Such a beautiful song with a sad underlying message and story, brought me to tears. My quartet is singing this song a cappella and it makes me cry every time we finish singing.

  • I had a childhood girlfriend whose name was Emily. Everytime I hear this song I'm reminded of her. Losing touch is a terrible feeling and I'd hate for it to go as long as this song says.

Em, I miss you, and if by some stroke of luck you happen to see this, this is for you.

    ~Dino

  • fuck manly, you're manly if you like girly shit, because you don't give a shit.

  • @jlilaj Don't feed the trolls!

  • @jlilaj Hey! I love Coldplay (just like you?), but this guy is just too gay! D':

  • @Theowest coldplay sux man

  • @Theowest

What is too gay? Good music? Talented writers who can play instruments and write lyrics? Quality sounds?

Go back to your lip synced crap and leave the adults to their music. We speak of intelligent subjects here. You're over there with the rest of the Disney crowd

  • @Sommelier97 I'm not listening to lip synced crap... I just think he's a bit gay.. It's not "manly" enough for me.

  • @Theowest

Tell me your "manly" music then. Why don't you tell all of us your "manly" music.

You aren't a listener of music. You are a follower of media, friends, magazines, etc...

  • @Theowest - Maybe you'd better appreciate 'Smokin' Joe Frazier and the Knockouts'.

  • This might have been created by Brian Wilson

  • i love this song

  • is this song based from a story called A Rose For Emily by William Faulkner? cause the song has a similarity to the story =)

    nice song btw.. =D

  • Yes it is based on the Faulkner story. It's a awesome read and The Zombies are one of the most underated bands in the history of music.....

  • I can see that. I didn't know what to expect when I first heard the album. I had only known Time Of The Season which I didn't even know the name of or who it was by for years.

  • My name is Emily Rose - This song really reflects me in a way... I love it. When I'm dead I want this song playing.

  • the mad irony in this song is that i just asked my friend emily rose what her favorite song in the world was and wouldnt have guessed this was what i would be listening to :)) its awesome.

    Pffft i love this song

  • god this is such a sweet song! i love it! but yet its sad!

  • people assume because digital is newer that its better, but this is truely a foolish notion. im sure people thought 8 tracks tapes were the future and look what happened there. unfortunately most people's opinions are based on cliches, one of which is that newer is always better. sound is created by vibration. records contain grooves which produce vibration, not a code for a computer to decode into sound. the grooves create vibrations directly, so hence the dimension a digital medium cant create
