Yeah...there was really no need to have a band behind him here. It was just a solo...of what we saw...maybe there is more flow to the song in the entire video.
This guy's a great (GREAT) drummer, but almost every part of this drum part is just.. unnecessary. Personally i'd enjoy listening to this waaaay more if it was simpler and more defined.. listening to someone go nuts on their drums can only stay interesting for so long
after watching this three time i noticed that he threw a stick out of his hand at 0:10, did anyone else notice that. . lol This guys a beast, sticks can fly out of his hand and u never notice because of how good he is. . hahaha
Sooo sick that he is playing billy cobham. The way he does his fills at lightning speeds reminds me of billy. A few of my buddies got the chance to meet Ronald and said he was the nicest guy. Its nice to see talented people who are so humble. What a blessed human being!
@STIXAHOY He plays more structured in the studio....Live performances he's just crazy especially when the artist he's playing for allows him to express himself freely.
@VichoPL Well you're only watching a portion of it.....It's kinda hard to walk into a conversation mid sentence and knowing what they're talking about.
I won't question his abilities............ no way......... look at the Band and people he has performed with and all the way to MD fest ( only the choosen one gets there)
i saw billy cobham how he played this song, its just the same how rbj played this,i think rbj,s chops is modren compare to cobham, but the attitude, passion and the heart of the song and the way it should be play is still the same.
I agree with some of the comments about Bruner's focus on speed rather than patterns or rhythms. It's hard to hear where he's coming from sometimes; is he trying to be creative or just dazzle us with his speed...Hmmm. Billy and Dennis and Narada (and Max and Buddy, etc.) had compositions in mind and dazzled us with their application towards the pieces, rather than mere velocity...
@RutboyNiles... He's fast? That's all you can say. Sounds like someone who can't do what this guy is doing, and is a bit angry. There's skill there. As a fan of drumming in general you can't help but sit there and enjoy. It's like riding a rollercoaster, and saying "yeah it was fast, but can it take me back to my house". That wasn't the point. IT'S A ROLLERCOASTER!!! You want to get to your house, hop on a Greyhound.
I really don't get the general excitement about Ronald Bruner Jr..
No offense, but I think his MD performance 2006 was 100% chops and 0% groove. Same with this video. It's just horribly uninspiring.
I mean, he's fast, so I can understand the fascination especially for younger drummers. But what's coming after that super-fast thing? He's not drumming for the music and I feel sorry for the other musicians in this video.
i can definitely say that he's an amazing drummer, but i simply dont like how he only focuses on speed, rather than any sort of rhythm.
instead of planning certain rhythms will fills throughout them, he just flails his limbs EVERYWHERE while simultaneously maintaining the composition of the song and a steady tempo.lol
For those who seem to still not be sure: youtube(dot)com/watch?v=ujcYw2QTPzM. The tune was recorded while RB Jr was still in diapers. Not that I have any problem with him taking his own interpretation of the tune, but I believe when you hear something you should know and respect where it came from.
If that's "boring", like one guy suggested, then I love being bored! Saw him last night with Stanley Clarke, Hiromi and Ruslan Sirota- absolutely fantastic!! Amazing musicians!
@rwiltzjr Actually they're really close friends and they teach each other things and they were pretty much mentored by the same people (Chambers,Cobham,Kennedy,Smitty Smith, etc.)
So yeah....nobody would shit on anything it all evens out.
I really respect his technical ability, but I really don't like what he chooses to play. It's too much for me. I usually don't knock drummers, and I don't like to engage in this youtube hating thing which I see all the time, but this is one case where I must state my opinion. I understand he's drumming over Mahivishnu, originally played by Billy Cobham, but still, he's just blasting.
musicians that cant keep there own timing depend heavily on the drummer to do so for them....but that hadicaps yur drummer...he cant venture out because you'll get lost on your instrument..so therefor that musician now wants to blame the drummer....whatever...keep up or go home...especially if the drummer produce the track.....great video RBjr!!
Juddgreg333,...please be mindful of the fact that you have NEVER personally met Ronald Brunner,..nor have you played with him to make such a comment.
