@ItsSparkyHere what you call "sort of", I call professional singer. you only can judge when you see her "live"; she worked very hard to fit in and believe me, i'm a fan of hour 1 of this group, she's perfect Degree.
@ytgm00 I wasn't criticizing her at all. I only meant that she sang with the Supremes (FLOS) after the group was officially disbanded and now she is singing with the Three Degrees. Is she a full fledged member or a fill in? I have never heard her sing, but she must be terrifically good to be asked to sing in both groups. Imagine the repertoire she has to learn. Amazing.
This is the real deal ! No lypsynching ! These girls were so talented ! Nothing like this today ! I really miss The Three Degrees. Thank goodness tor recordings !
Agree...never get tire of this song...is is sad that today, we don't have music with this class..and for the remixed version,,, 1998...Valerie does a great job....great as a hole..
@The096757 the line-up that you see here, nobody died; Sheila, singing lead here, left the group in the eighties. in 2009, Fayette Pinkney sadly died after a short illness; she was an orignal member of the group but left in 1976 when Helen Scott replaced her. today, Helen with Valerie Holiday are still The Three Degrees with new member Freddie Pool, who replaced Cynthia Garrison, early 2011, because Cindy has health issues. Cindy stayed 20 years and so a Degree in every way.
@The096757 A bit of trivia: with the exception of Cindy and Freddie and two other women who briefly joined the group after Sheila left in '86, Fayette Pinkney sang with every singer that was in the group, including Helen Scott, who sang along side Faye from '63-'66. The longest running line up of the group was Helen, Valerie and Cindy (21 years). Next: Helen, Valerie, and Sheila (10 years), and then the Classic line-up, Faye, Sheila and Valerie (9 years).
@The096757 a bit of trivia continued: the shortest line up of the group was the original group. They were together less than a year (1963): Fayette with Shirley Porter and Linda Turner. Shirley and Linda were quickly replaced with Helen, and Janet Harmon, the next to the next shortest line up ('63-'66). After Helen left, she was replaced by Sheila Ferguson ('66) and Sundray Tucker (very briefly) replaced Janet before Valerie Holiday was admitted into the group in 1967.
@jd7779311 Sheila Ferguson (lead) and Valerie Holiday, sporting a new short hairdo, are the same. The third is Helen Scott, a member from '64-'66, then again from '76-now, she replaced Fayette Pinkyney, who left in '76.
I just saw the episode of Sanford and Son when the Three Degrees were special guest on the show! Does anyone remember that? ("Uncle Fred"! lol) I wished they would have had the chance to sing this song on that episode. It would have been awesome!
@jrushmen Valerie, Sheila, and Fayette are not the original line-up, but, they are the CLASSIC line-up. The original group consisted of Fayette with Shirley Porter and Linda Turner. See my bit of trivia content I posted to The096757.
@jrushmen Wasn't trying to insult you. No need to get huffy. I use to think that Faye, Sheila, and Val were the original group, too, that is until Helen joined and I found out she had previously been in the group. When I found that out I sought to find out more about the group. And, yes, I too will take the classic line-up over the originals, although, they weren't bad either, just not as good as the Classic Three Degrees. And, sorry if I insulted you.
@jrushmen Apology accepted. However, there was no need to remove your comment. Can we be friends? We obviously have a common ground: The ever lovely Three Degrees! A Toast of Love to them, and to all who love these ladies as much as we do!!!!
@proverbs1824 I know the history of this group; since 1973 - that's a looooong time ago, I'm 50 now, I do follow this group right on spot. So, the in- and out members are 'imho' trying to find the right combination with somebody. So, that's why 'I find' that the main line-ups are the 3 major combination. The last one with Cynthia Garrison 'was' 21 years. I'm sorry to inform that Cynthia left the group because of health problems; Freddie Pool stepped in. We wish them a lot of success!!!
@ytgm00 Wow, I didn't know Cynthia dropped out. When did this happen? I know of Freddie Poole, she recently left the F.L.O.S. (former ladies of the Supremes). I believe she sang with them for about 14 years. Yes, I, too, wish them continued success. I love the Three Degrees, but my favourite line-up will always be the Classic line-up of Faye, Sheila, and Valerie. They are the ones who brought the Three Degrees world wide fame!
@proverbs1824 yep, indeed... they are in San Francisco, right now; Rrazz Room, debut of Freddie. Seems to go really gr8; of course it's not easy for them too. i don't know if you are on FaceBook, but there's a very active group, with lot's of info and Valerie being an active member (A toast of love - A tribute to The Three Degrees)
True, me too fell in love with this group during their classic line-up. but, i came to value every member. Nobody in this world does the same job whole his life...
@ytgm00 yes, you are right. But, what a career they had while with the Degrees! I first came to know the Three Degrees from their album Maybe, and an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show many years ago, but, I didn't follow their career the way I did the Supremes (my all time favourite girl group). Infact, I didn't hear alot about the Degrees again until they made the top of the charts with 'When Will I See You Again'. It was then that I paid more attention to them.
@ytgm00 infact, it was Helen's return to the group that prodded me to investigate the history of the group because when she joined it was stated she was a former member returned. And, it was like, really? She use to be in the group? So, I did my research. The history of my favourite groups is like a hobby for me. And, yes, I am on facebook, so I will definetly check out any of the Degrees facebook pages! Thanks!
@studentrebel The Three Degrees are the longest runing female trio, in the Guiness book of records. Changes in the line-ups are natural. This group started in 1963. The first line-up, and probably the most known line-up, are Fayette Pinkney, Valerie Holiday & Sheila Ferguson (from 1967-1976). Than, Faye left and Helen Scott came in (who was a member before 1967!). In 1986 Sheila left and after looking for the right member Cynthia Garrison came in 1989. So, the group is stable for 21 years!
@ytgm00 To clear things up: The original Three Degrees were: Fayette Pinkney, Linda Turner, and Shirley Poole. They came together in 1963. That same year Linda and Shirley dropped out and were replaced with Helen Scott and Janet Harmon. In '66 Helen dropped out and was replaced by Sheila Ferguson. In 1967, Janet dropped out and was replaced temporarily by Sundray Tucker, then finally Valerie Holiday. In '76, Faye dropped out, and Helen returned. In '86, Sheila dropped out and then (cont)
@ytgm00 and then Vera Brown was added. She dropped out in '87, and was replaced by Rhea Harris, and she dropped out in '88, and was replaced by Victoria Wilkes. Victoria dropped out in '89 and replaced with Cynthia Garrison. And, since 1989, the present line up of Valerie Holiday, Helen Scott, and Cynthia Garrison have been performing as the Three Degrees. Quite a history, and all women have stayed true to the 3 Degrees sound!
@ytgm00 just an interesting note: Sundray Tucker made no recordings with the group. In 1972 she almost joined the Supremes, but, instead, her sister became a Supreme. Sundray's sister is Lynda Laurence.
I don't know why, but I agree! This is a simple, beautiful song, sung by beautiful voices. They capture that simple feeling of longing. Longing for someone special. It was one of those pieces of Gamble and Huff magic. I am amazed Sheila hated it at first. Well if they hated it ... they made something memorable out of it. They will be singing this one 50 years from now.
I was 16 then when they released it in 1970s, the 3Degrees were my favourite, from their voice to the dress. RIP. This world is unforgiving such talented musicians should have lived forever......
we have soul singers look at the pussycat dolls or lady gaga they show their souls and bodies.....well i know what you meant because drugs and guns are so rampant nowdays thats why we cant fnd anymore incredible group like the three degrees....
sometime in the late 1980s people like paula abdul, mariah carey and janet jackson caused black womne to suck at music. before that they got respect from everyone and were cool.
I just love it . Reminds of a radio station here in Chicago in the late 70's(1978 to '79)that played soul classics and always heard "NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE" Gloria Gaynor's version too. thanx
@ghrpdx CAUSE TODAYS MUSIC SUCKS...SO THE GIRLS HAVE TO BE HALF NAKED FOR ANYONE TO LISTEN TO THER GARBAGE...LOL...HOW DID WE GO FROM THIS...TO LADY CACA...OR BEYONCE...UGH..
The Three Degrees was one of my favourite groups of the 70's. Was just watching a clip of "When Will I See You Again" not realising that Fayette Pinkney has now joined the band of singers in the great beyond. May she rest in peace!
Fayette Pinkney, a soul singer best known as a member of the Three Degrees, died Saturday, June 27th, from acute respiratory failure. She was 61.
Pinkney joined Shirley Porter and Linda Turner in the Three Degrees in the early '60s, when she was still in high school in Philadelphia. Managed by Richard Barrett, who produced the Chantels and Little Anthony and the Imperials, the group underwent a series of lineup changes with Pinkney remaining the only consistent member.
I love the tasteful swooning cries of ecstacy at the beginning - oooh, aaahh! We know exactly what kind of precious moments they are longing for, and it's totally romantic - nicely classy & classic song - I remember the 70's and disco with fondness - and also the 3 Degrees
This brings back so many memories! This song was HUGE in Italy back in the 70s. RIP Fayette and thanks for those memories. Two sad weeks , many losses in showbiz.
I remember when I was in NY in the summer of 05, after I turned 20, I met this chick in Brooklyn at this West Indian restaurant and we ended up hanging out all night until about 6 in the morning. We had so much fun all night, and naturally when it came time to go our separate ways, the question was "When Will I See You Again". Unfortunately that was the end.
SENSATIONAL !!! Those female vocalists are absolutely angelic! I wish I could give them a hug! Mahalo for posting this clip. From, Maui No Ka Oi boy - E Kahaialii.
Exactly the same memory for me as well. This song was so special to me because its release and instant popularity coincided with the time that I started to listen to the radio as a young boy of 9 or 10. I'll never forget the first time I heard it. My mother had been taken to the hospital the night before with severe chest pains brought on by a heart attack at age 40. The following morning as I was getting ready for school I heard it on the radio for the first time on KFRC in San Francisco, CA.
I love you, girls!

Yes it was a nice song.
I too am from San Francisco.
I remember hearing this song
in school while attending Horace Mann Jr. High in the 8th grade.
