Spitfire soundbarrier- impossible. frontal area of airscrew and other parasite drag elements made it impossible, However one pilot recorded in a dive that he got into control reversal. Although many pilots did not accept this story. Alex Henshaw test flew Spitfires with contra airscrews.
I do agree RAF pilots flew under American command, and Spit Mk9 under American markings (limited number) but as far as I know the Mk 19 never was a navalized version of any Spit. Maybe Seafires but after the end of WWII. So if over Tokyo, not as operational missions.
I belive it's a "Griffin" engine and prop combo. The Shackleton used these. This is a Mrk19 Spit. A prop speed record was set with a modified p51 with this combination twenty years ago. With a speed of around five hundred mph, piloted by Steve Hinton. There is a video on YT about that flight.
Thank you for the detailed response. I had heard that the P-51's rolls royce engine was so powerful it would try and twist the plane over especially after the bubble canopy was added the contra rotating prop would seem to negate this.
The mk19 broke the sound barrier many times by accident over Tokyo during recon missions - the aircraft had to dive to take the photos so it was a good diver
First time a prop driven aircraft went supersonic. Wonderful spit !!!
Please check for recce missions by Mk 19 over Tokyo. Which airfield close enough? Check Mk 19 range datafiles on SERIOUS documentation. You need to be more serious if you want to join....
Yeah thats something i am trying to find out.......the information i received was from the battle of britain memorial squadron at RAF Conningsby, i cant get back because its too far from where i live.
However MK19 Spifires and RAF pilots flew under the Americans command.....possibly from carriers if they were converted to do so - or they could have flown from surrounding countries as the MK 19 can take external fuel reserves
Yep they have use the contra rotating prop rather than the 5 blades prop for torque purpose on the Mark 19 and other later models... with the great Roll Royce Griffon engine the torque is so strong that the contra rotating prop is a valuable and effective compromise.
Actually Both planes you can see on the video the Corsair and the Spit belongs to Mr Christophe Jacquard and are based in Dijon Darois France... poor guy !!! looks like he really doesn't know what to do with his money ;-)))
