there's this theory going around that the reason why people are creeped out by a robot's similarity to a human is because the robot evokes fear of death, dying, and mortality. i think i'm creeped out for a different reason...how much did that thing COST??
How hard would it be to make joints which moves in two dimentions at once? if that could be done to this guy his movements would look that extra bit more realistic.
you can program it to help humans with everyday task. you can give it a more human personality, manners and everyday task. but will it ever truly no right from wrong? a disaster waiting to happen.

That's basically what Hanson Robotics was going for. The flesh for the head is actually called "frubber", with a plastic skull underneath to resemble a human face's flexibility. Frubber is amazing, looking and feeling like fatty flesh, but cold. It really should be used in prosthetic limbs; it's not expensive to make.
That's really impressive, all the more so in that it isn't a female head wearing pink lipstick that's supposed to look like a "hot chick" and that everyone makes jokes about involving oral sex!
I can imagine the guy looking down on himself to scream "shit, I have no shoulders!!!". A moment later "and fuck, I have no body!!!!" and finally "and whatäs more disgraceful: I HAVE NO DICK!!!!!2

There will allways be some1 that will experiment with robots.
And there will allways be some1 making a mistake on purpose or not and create a selfthinking robot that will have the capability to destroy us.
Remember not perfect beings will make mistake and if they do the perfect robot will create a lifeless joyless perfect world where there is only unity.
Put some damn gear ratios so you can generate smooth movements. Or use some memory muscle wire. Not one of these new age bots has fluid motion yet. Must I do everything my damn self.
@Anothercoilgun: Try it. Wire up 64 micro servos (32 on each side of the face) that match the muscles on the face in exact proportions and connect them to a specially invented, more water pliable secret recipe silicone sheet. Connect all 64 to a micro controller so that 32 separate emotions can be displayed on command plus individual manipulation, without the face looking like its over doing it. THEN add gear boxes to them all, and see if it still all fits in the head.
@Anothercoilgun Sure... go ahead and try so you can realize why all of the million dollar robots don't have fluid motion... remember to add some lip- syching and the necessary computational power.

He is so ugly...I prefere human of flesh and blood..Does he robots have a pennis ? I guess many old rich ladies will buy them...Sick world..i feel like vomiting !
Ugly? He would look like a model if the back of his head was covered up.
And have you ever seen human flesh close-up? Look at you hand closely with a magnifier and and you'll see some disgusting things. Frubber is much better.
Being a Doctor myself, and a few friends found out all you need is a bag of mud to disable any robot sensor. Simplicity. Throw cement mud on any of it's fake eyes or sensor points and it is BLIND. Robots are not adept at wiping off their eyes in their programing.
There ought to be laws regarding the forcing of people to work with interactive intelligences. Like if I don;t want ot work with the AI that interrogate or the ones with attitudes then I shouldn't be subjected to them. And since the artificial intellegences get pay checks of electricity that feeds them ...I ought to get paid too, USA is a slave nation. 2009 I am not a reseach scientist...I have been a slave!
The reason they may not go down all the way is possibly because blinking all the way takes too much time to perform, which is unrealistic. So they just have him slightly close his eyes very quickly, to make the illusion that he's actually blinking at human speed. Quite a good idea, actually.
@johan28 Hahah at least I'm not the only one. On the other hand it's a bit weird and creepy...humping a robot, when the sparks come flying out of you know where....anyone ever been zapped in the schlong?
Why do they never open their mouths really wide? Maybe it would break the fake skin or make it look really ugly. I want to see a robot with a face that looks real!
I would prefer it if they focused on AI first. It's an interesting development to create human-like facial expressions and looks, but I wouldn't mind talking to a robot with the appearance of a NS-5 robot (irobot movie), or even a predecessor one like a NS-4.
Jules, just a poor imitation for Hanson Robotics. Well designed perhaps like a movie, designed to entertain nothing more. A robotic handler that can efficiently control 100K pieces of baggage at Heathrow is more useful, A robot that can precisely dig out cancer cells from a human brain a genius of engineering but a robot 2 fake a smile & talk a few words. Hanson U have to get out more, get a life. What end does this serve? (other than very expensive entertainment)
Well said Templemain. I just hope that none of my taxes are ever used for some useless crap like this. Why is it necessary for robots to look exactly like people (except as very expensive entertainment) - wouldn't you want to instead fine tune robots to suit their environment and intended purposes - defusing bombs, mining asteroids, radiological decontamination, etc.
No, instead, let's have some hideous coke whore ask me if I want to learn some physics.
Stop whining. What purpose does it serve? What purpose do computer games serve? Entertainment can help push technology which in turn opens up more possibilities. This will capture peoples imagination more than a bomb defusing robot...
Agreed deadpassive. Whining about your taxes...? Get fucked. If you're standing by saying this is a waste of time why don't you never see another movie or do anything purely recreational at all because by your beliefs you're wasting time. AI robots are fucking useful jerk. They wouldn't require the food resources or water humans would and would be able to do human tasks without using said resources. They'll probably eventually have self sustaining energy too to axe electricity source requirements
why do you care? this isnt your life its Hansons, he can do whatever he wants. If your so worried about your tax dollars then stop paying for gas. Thats the biggest scam in history... next to the bible.
in the end we will die because robots will get smarter and upgrate to new level and will start kill ppl.. the scientiscs are stupid.. dont you see ?!!! hawent you see the matrix movie where robots kills ppll /// ?
So with increased technology and more intelligence, things get an overwhelming desire to kill other beings? Well, maybe.
Anyway, humans will die sooner or later and if anything, robots will probably prolong our existence (especially if they can help us colonise other planets/moons).
Yes. I'd also assume that with these intelligent artificial beings would also be ethically aware, since the only other example of "intelligent beings" (us) has. In many sci-fi films/books/games the robots spread and kill everything and have no real emotion, but I don't see why this would be the case in reality.
it depends on if the existence of humans is beneficial, doesnt matter or if humans pose a threat. We humans think exactly the same way - think about who you are friends with, there always is or was mutual benefit involved.
I don't think that's true in all cases though. We don't destroy everything which isn't beneficial, we destroy things which cause harm or at worst irritation.
What is it with these people that they NEED to make a robot that looks & behaves like a human. A robot to build cars, electronics, defuse bombs, fly space craft or to navigate I can understand, even HAL types I can live with but this, I really don't understand it's purpose? The whole idea of a robot is to DO things a human cannot do as quickly or as efficiently, or sacrifice its self to save a human not substitute 4 a human.
meh...your partly right...its just like computer graphics with science...we use them more oftenly than robots but robots help our purpose too...instead of harming human life or interupting it...you simply duplicate it and observe...its hard to explain...anyway...if you ever heard of the game World of Watcraft, you would know that there was an epidemic with a fantasy disease...it spread quikly due to its programming and by accident..killed almost everyone's characters within hours..alot to learn.
People are using robotics as another excuse to be lazy. Robots are meant to be useful, but not to the extent of doing every single job out there so that everyone can sit around doing nothing all day, sleeping their lives away. Sure, robots are needed where people can't survive, sure, robots can do normal everyday work, but they shouldn't be made to do all the work that even crippled humans can do, thats just plain laziness.
Dear mangakid19. Thank goodness some else thinks along the same lines as me. Robots that help build cars, washing machines, assist in surgical operations for the sake of precise movement thats OK but never to made imitate mankind, never. When robots can give biological birth to baby robots, nurture them grow them & teach them the true meaning of the three laws of robotics then those who don't share my thoughts call me back & say "I told U so"
Robots that imitate people would be nice, but they shouldn't be made to behave with human emotions, that is getting to carried away. If robots do look like humans, make it obvious that they are.
Actually, Japan has everything on us. they already have snake-like robots that can swim, crawl, and see, while we just found how to make them move, and yet you say that we are better than the Japanese?
Dear Humans,
You have impressed us with how smart and creative you are, Just don't take this to far or alow them to be stronger then you are.

not bad. Need to slow the acceleration/ decelration down on the head movement for more realism.

Templemain 3 years ago
Well said Templemain. I just hope that none of my taxes are ever used for some useless crap like this. Why is it necessary for robots to look exactly like people (except as very expensive entertainment) - wouldn't you want to instead fine tune robots to suit their environment and intended purposes - defusing bombs, mining asteroids, radiological decontamination, etc.
No, instead, let's have some hideous coke whore ask me if I want to learn some physics.
dariusblock 3 years ago
Stop whining. What purpose does it serve? What purpose do computer games serve? Entertainment can help push technology which in turn opens up more possibilities. This will capture peoples imagination more than a bomb defusing robot...
deadpassive 3 years ago
Agreed deadpassive. Whining about your taxes...? Get fucked. If you're standing by saying this is a waste of time why don't you never see another movie or do anything purely recreational at all because by your beliefs you're wasting time. AI robots are fucking useful jerk. They wouldn't require the food resources or water humans would and would be able to do human tasks without using said resources. They'll probably eventually have self sustaining energy too to axe electricity source requirements
Spirituse 3 years ago
why do you care? this isnt your life its Hansons, he can do whatever he wants. If your so worried about your tax dollars then stop paying for gas. Thats the biggest scam in history... next to the bible.

in the end we will die because robots will get smarter and upgrate to new level and will start kill ppl.. the scientiscs are stupid.. dont you see ?!!! hawent you see the matrix movie where robots kills ppll /// ?
kestans 3 years ago
So with increased technology and more intelligence, things get an overwhelming desire to kill other beings? Well, maybe.
Anyway, humans will die sooner or later and if anything, robots will probably prolong our existence (especially if they can help us colonise other planets/moons).
deadpassive 3 years ago
And if they become advanced enough, they might be able to exist on their own once humanity dies it's miserable death.
EmberABC 3 years ago
Yes. I'd also assume that with these intelligent artificial beings would also be ethically aware, since the only other example of "intelligent beings" (us) has. In many sci-fi films/books/games the robots spread and kill everything and have no real emotion, but I don't see why this would be the case in reality.
deadpassive 3 years ago
it depends on if the existence of humans is beneficial, doesnt matter or if humans pose a threat. We humans think exactly the same way - think about who you are friends with, there always is or was mutual benefit involved.
foreignaustrian 3 years ago
I don't think that's true in all cases though. We don't destroy everything which isn't beneficial, we destroy things which cause harm or at worst irritation.
Lets just not piss these robots off ;-)

What is it with these people that they NEED to make a robot that looks & behaves like a human. A robot to build cars, electronics, defuse bombs, fly space craft or to navigate I can understand, even HAL types I can live with but this, I really don't understand it's purpose? The whole idea of a robot is to DO things a human cannot do as quickly or as efficiently, or sacrifice its self to save a human not substitute 4 a human.
Templemain 3 years ago
meh...your partly right...its just like computer graphics with science...we use them more oftenly than robots but robots help our purpose too...instead of harming human life or interupting it...you simply duplicate it and observe...its hard to explain...anyway...if you ever heard of the game World of Watcraft, you would know that there was an epidemic with a fantasy disease...it spread quikly due to its programming and by accident..killed almost everyone's characters within hours..alot to learn.

People are using robotics as another excuse to be lazy. Robots are meant to be useful, but not to the extent of doing every single job out there so that everyone can sit around doing nothing all day, sleeping their lives away. Sure, robots are needed where people can't survive, sure, robots can do normal everyday work, but they shouldn't be made to do all the work that even crippled humans can do, thats just plain laziness.
mangakid19 3 years ago
Dear mangakid19. Thank goodness some else thinks along the same lines as me. Robots that help build cars, washing machines, assist in surgical operations for the sake of precise movement thats OK but never to made imitate mankind, never. When robots can give biological birth to baby robots, nurture them grow them & teach them the true meaning of the three laws of robotics then those who don't share my thoughts call me back & say "I told U so"
Templemain 3 years ago
Robots that imitate people would be nice, but they shouldn't be made to behave with human emotions, that is getting to carried away. If robots do look like humans, make it obvious that they are.

Japan has nothing on us
RoyFan33 3 years ago
Actually, Japan has everything on us. they already have snake-like robots that can swim, crawl, and see, while we just found how to make them move, and yet you say that we are better than the Japanese?
