  • i was hear on this very day.we askted for a miracle then came brin the dog poor jim mcnicol.rates one of the best matches that i have seen.

  • So in the 2nd caption "only a win will secure league status". And they drew... so presumably they went down....

  • @malthuswasright - well done noddy. if you read caption it says GOING Into the last game only a win will seure league status. a draw would only secure if other results went our way but a win would secure it in any case.

  • wont forget this day in a hurry, couple of hundred miles away we was fighting for our league place as well.Burnley were lucky that season,we was bad enough to go no doubt.

  • to be honest that is just the same as crewe now were wining and then we let the other team walk all the way through us to come back and draw owel i enjoyed watchin how crewe used to be back in those times :)

  • We love you Bryn, we do,

We love you Bryn, we do,

We love you Bryn, we do,

    Oh Bryn we love you!

  • Love seeing plainmoor aint changed much since the year i was born!

  • what is the name of the song?

  • crewe team was packed with future internationals that day, platt, thomas and cutler

  • A very young David Platt there.

  • Just as a side question, how old was Torquay goalkeeper, Kenny Allen? He doesn't look a day over 44 here.

  • he was about 38ish in this clip.one of the best games i have been too. your right before this game we were 2nd from bottom with burnley at the bottom. they won , we drew and with lincoln losing at swansea a point was enough on goal difference. love to know what any of the players are doing now ? remember a poom of dust coming up from dobsons boot when he scored the goal.... then everyone going crazy

  • just as they had given themselves a chance, Torquay were going to blow it at the very last. Then the news came through about Jim McNichol and the dog (Ginger?) Six or seven minutes injury time and then Renton Laidlaw says "Late drama at Plainmoor...." Paul Dobson and a smiling Dick Woodacre on "Spotlight" in the evening.

    Incredible match, incredible season.

  • Although I support Ipswich, Torquay have always been the "local" club that I have most affection for and it was this season (86-87) that made me always keep an eye out for them. From what I can remember, Torquay looked certs for the drop at Christmas but they slowly put some results together. Didn't they get off the bottom of the league in the penultimate game or something? I remember listening to "Sport on 2" and them commentating on Burnley's win. I thought it was going to be so sad that

  • Thanks for sharing - an amazing bit of history. Thought the programme cover with Crewe Alexander on the front was great. The supporters of bigger clubs don't know what they are missing.

  • Hate the music in this video! Let's have one without it.

  • this song was number 1 at the time of this match, thats why i selected it .

  • thanks for this vid, i'd heard about the game, made my day!!!!

  • thank you , glad you enjoyed it. I was at that game and its easily in the top 5 games of the many tufc ive seen... I am in process of getting some "original tsw tv news" footgage sorted of this game , but with xmas coming up ect it will have to wait i think till new year. though its only about $25... check out the other videos i have posted on here... more to come....

i seem remember some of the players that evening down torquay seafront celebrating doing the conga...those were the days

  • i seem remember some of the players that evening down torquay seafront celebrating doing the conga...those were the days.... lets hope we get the league status back again. i wonder where some of our players are these days and what they are up too. If any see this video please send me a message.

  • This was season before my first visit to Plainmoor. An amazing piece of video of one of the most infamous games in the Gulls' history which I never knew existed. Amazing how the ground (well most of it) has changed. Wasn't great was it?!!! Loved the bloke muttering 'bloody hell' every time Torquay spurn a chance in the first half, and I'd forgotten the bell. Also amazing to hear the euphoria league status can bring, lets hope it returns in May. Thanks you so much for posting this!

  • Wow. Never seen footage of this despite it being such an infamous day in Torquay's history. Wasn't quite old enough to remember it although I think my first visit to Plainmoor was the following season. Amazing to see how the ground has changed, it really wasn't great was it?!! Love the bloke muttering 'bloody hell' every time Torquay spurn a chance in the first half. Going to spend the afternoon on this channel I think! Amazing the euphoria that league status can bring. Can't wait til May!

  • Good old Crewe. Always enjoyed Torquay away. CAFC

  • yes they were hero's that afternoon. i was in the old mini stand with my dad that afternoon as a youngster. though dobbo came up trumps with his usual much needed ability to find the net , they all worked there socks off. 14 years later i was at the barnet match in 2001 , where i witnessed another last day survival. dobbo , loram . mcnichol your all legends in my book

  • one of the best days in my life still made my pulse race watching again cant beleive its 21 years ago and we all know what happened next!!

  • Good old Crewe, doing what we do best, snatching a defeat (or in this case a draw) from the jaws of victory!

BTW we are Crewe AlexanDRA not DER like the programme said.

  • What an afternoon that was.

    Dobbo - what a hero!!
