Unicron must have some kind of Stealth Technology, because neither Moonbase 1 nor that Planet in the beginning of the Movie saw him coming. He must turn it off right when he's about to consume his victims, that way the inhabitants won't get away in time in there ships and will get sucked in, even if they are able to get to the ships before the Planet or Moon goes. That must be why Jazz didn't see him till he was right on top of them.

@catholicz41 Give the director Nelson Shin as much credit for Unicron's performance because I saw in the anniversery DVD interviews with Nelson Shin that the material Orson Wells gave them when he recorded was mostly him hacking and breathing heavy. He was struggly just to breath. (Makes sense because we now know he didn't even survive long enough for the movie to be completed.) So what Nelson Shin and the others did was put his voice through a Vocoder. They cleaned it up and changed his pitch.
