That's why you do a test. I've been in the audio industry a long time and I never assume my mic is working. Go figure.

We tested, and heard audio, and assumed it was from the external mic plugged into the AV port, but it was from the built-in mic.

You should have noticed the lack of presence when using the built-in mic, verses the external mic which offers lots of presence. That's the dead give away that your external mic is not the mic doing the job.

In laymen terms the external mic offers a richer, broader spectrum of frequency.
