Atmospheric gases trapped in these meteorites exactly match samples measured by the Viking landers. Isotopic ratios in these gasses are unique to the location in which they formed--and completely unique. Like a fingerprint.
We don't have any meteorites from the Tunguska Event. Also the dog thing may have been made up at the time (1911). But very probably humans and other animals have been killed in past (like the cow from the Valera Meteorite)--just in prehistory or in remote regions where they has been poor documentation.
Well, that's fine. But where are all the MOON meteorites? After all, the moon is much closer, and any fragments from moon metors should fall to earth. So, where are all the MOON meteorites?
Several institutions keep small specimens just for the public to touch--a slab of Lunar Basalt in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in DC for example. While most moon rocks are stored at the JSC and are kept in a nitrogen atmosphere, temp and humidity controlled and never directly handled to avoid any contamination.
Let me get this right. With the closure of so many post offices, is there now an ever decreasing likelyhood of UK grounded meteorites being dubbed with disseminate titles resulting from both the multiplicative factors of widening catchment areas and the associative naming convention explained by Dr. Vic?
The natural history museum in South Kensington has a large collection of meteorites. They can be bought from specialist dealers easily but the Mars rock is expensive...Meteorite samples like GIBEON can be very cheap and are still billions of years old.Go to a mineral fair where you can buy them.I own meteorite classification ZAGAMI SNC.....(8grams with fusion crust)..and many other classifications..They look beautiful when acid etched(GIBEON shows WINDMANSTATTEN patterns)
admittantly some speculate jupiter could have a core, however this contraying to most info we get from jupiter but there is a very small chance. however, you obviously didn't mean it tht way.
Well a meteorite like that would be surprisingly dense so it's much heavier than a coin, and would have a greater terminal velocity. On top of that the extra weight would mean it carries more kinetic energy so it could kill something, possibly.
I own several samples of MARS ROCK known as ZAGAMI SNC.They can be handled without gloves. They can be bought from Meteorite specialist dealers and range from a £1 to tens of thosands depending on size and rarity.Mars meteorite is often sold in grams or parts of and costs many hundreds of pounds per gram.Having taken my SNC to the natural history museum I can be comfortable in knowing they are genuine.
with METAL meteorites any moisture on your fingers could cause rust to form/discolouration over a period of time. This would be most noticeable on the acid etched pieces. Some meteorites(metal) contain elements which are more vulnerable to the effects of moisture than others.
any asteriods would have broken up under the pressure of being pulled into its gravitational pull, any comets would have melted at the same point, there are no rocks, it is a gas giant, saturn has rocks which make up its rings, however this is because they entered at a angle and got trapted in orbit, jupiter also has rings, made up of tiny rock and dust particles, however the planet itself is a gas,
The Velera fall (Oct 15th 1972)killed a cow in Venezuela.
Clifurd-It is not the case that it is illegal to own rocks from the moon or mars--Material collected by Apollo Astronauts and Meteorites collected in Antarctica may not be privately owned. However, Martian and Lunar meteorites found elsewhere are sometimes (legally) put up for sale.
and she just LET you pick it up? I am skeptical. because i know it is illegal to own moon rocks. If you have a moon rock the government will take it from you
Whaaaat??? How do you say it came from Mars? How do you know that?

Just google 'lunar meteorites' for a current list. About 66 distinct MOON meteorites (Lunaites) have been discovered so far.

i dont think the terminal velocity of that could kill someone or something....
i remember watching on mythbusters when they throw coins of the empire state building.....they proved that story wrong.....
and the stone isnt much different either.

yh probably but what are the chances of that hitting someone?
anyways that must have been lucky to spot and find too.
fpsd0minat0r 2 years ago
The chances I'd imagine to be in the region of one in 100,000,000,000 or less. But of course, there is still a chance.

AsDayLightDies79 2 years ago
No what I mean is, with a size of that planet, the chances of there being some huge rocks in there is high.
