I've always seen skavens as the dark/evil version of Secret of Nimhs rats. Take for example the scene where Prispy is being chased off by that one rat that wields electrical halberd...
skaven already would rule the warhammer world the main reason they don't is because they have never unified together constant civil wars keep them at bay, out of all the warhammer armies if skaven united they would conquer the warhammer world with ease however they never will as is skaven nature.
Is their any reason skaven are not in warhamemr 40k? like whats really their story, i know he kind of described it in the info box, but i want to know more about them.
@MegaMetalDemon I'm no expert, but if you subscribe to the non-official theory that the Warhammer planet is part of the W40k universe, the simple explanation would be that Skaven just didn't spread in the galaxy : no spaceships, no space Skaven.
The closest race to Skaven in the W40k universe are the Hrud, but they don't play an important role and look more insectile than rat-like.
If you want to learn more about Skaven just google "skaven fluff" or "skaven W40k".
@MegaMetalDemon The skaven were originally just rat-men zhizzle and no-one know were they are from but their first appearance was at the now called savenblight that was first a temple for dwarfs and men. those dwarfs and men wanted to make a huge tower that touched the clouds to honour their god's. they build and build but they couldnt make it to the top. then one day a murky shady stranger appeared with the promise to build the tower BUT het wanted to honour his god 2. it was the horned rat.
@MegaMetalDemon In addition to the theory of Warhammer fantasy just being an isolated planet in the 40k system, then it's easy to say that they simply have not evolved space travel yet.
The other theory is, of course, that Fantasy is the past of 40k. In which case, you can assume that they became extinct at some point along the way (with Lizardmen, Wood Elves, Beastmen, Sky Titans, Dragons, Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts, and Orcs...oh wait...)
@MegaMetalDemon - The Skaven are the malevolent children of the chaos moon Morisleb. They are from the World where Warhammer is set, in a time long after the great end of the 40000th millennium
Actually the skaven would've handled the empire better if they didn't have to fight a vampire count that raised all the bloated and plagued corpses and empire mandred's forces. I think the vampire count was van hel or whatever his name is. Anyway i think the skaven assassinated him and then the emperor drove them back underground because they were undermanned or under-ratted.
I'd play WAR if the skaven were a playable faction. If they currently are then i'm just ignorant.
I love how ulthuan or whatever island the high elves are on seems like atlantis and the rest of the world is very similar to an old version of the world back in the exploration period and other similar timelines somewhat.
@paleface171 Well at least they have the potential to do so. However, the Skaven Clans are two busy betraying one another to unite and conquer the top world.
Moreover, even if the Skaven believe that the world is rightfully theirs, I doubt they really plan to settle on the surface : they have everything they need underground and rats are not made to live elsewhere than in tunnels. But that's more a personnal opinion, not really the official story.
@MrSpatull During the period of the Three Emperors, when the skaven unleashed the Black Death, they took over big swathes of the surface, enslaving the populace to grow food for them (or become food if they couldn't meet the quotas). So while the skaven might have no interest in living on the surface, they still covet what the surface can provide them. Also, their capital of Skavenblight is on the surface, the only skaven city that is above ground.
@MrSpatull No, they were wiped out by Count Mandred of Middenheim, who was able to unite the squabbling factions of humanity and drive the skaven back into their burrows. For his efforts, he was elected Emperor and bestowed with the title of 'Mandred Skaven Slayer'. He ruled for twenty-five years, then was assassinated in his own locked bed chamber by a visitor from Clan Eshin. After his death, the Empire broke apart again. Over the years, the entire story has become a fable to men of the Empire
@Carandini In fact, the history has been so distorted (no doubt due to human-dupes and agents of the skaven) that Emperor Mandred is now derisively called 'Mandred Rat-catcher' and his reign treated as a fairy-tale joke. After all, every school-child knows there's no such thing as the Underfolk.
@MrSpatull Black Library and currently up to my neck in writing the third novel in the Grey Seer Thanquol series. Nice thing is, Mythic gave me a free account for WAR. Bad thing is, they didn't give me any uber-cheaty magic items to go along with it! And, of course, writing books leaves very little time for messing about with MMOs.
The worst thing about Warhammer background though is how incredibly vast it is. Between White Dwarf and Citadel Journal, there's litterally a mountain of material.
@Carandini Well then it is a great pleasure to have you onboard Mr Werner! I can tell you that your novels are red in France too (but only the first one of the Thanquol series has been translated yet)!
The world of Warhammer seems so vast indeed. To be honest, I am surprised that GW or the Black Library have not published some kind of encyclopedia about WFB and W40k. I mean those two universes are so complex that it is very difficult for newcomers like me to learn their history.
@MrSpatull They've been a bit slow getting the books translated into French (indeed, I wasn't aware Grey Seer had been, though I know it has been released in German). Now I'll have to track down a copy for my archives!
And I certainly hear you on the encyclopedia angle. There really should be one. Lexicanum is a fan-based, almost wikipedia-like site that does an admirable job, but even they have lots of gaps.
One of the most fitting tracks to these guys, really getting the creepy atmosphere. And the timing is good too. I would do a skaven tribute too, but I find it difficult to find enough material. Everyone seems to have so much more than me!
@MrSpatull I've noticed that too, for some reason it's harder to find art for fantasy than for 40k, especially fanart. But I've finished my skaven video now, and even though it's not my best it's pretty good too.
Well, if you got pics for High elves and Dark elves I'd like to have them. Thankyou mate
@MrSpatull Wait I'm sorry to say this But didn't The High Elves win the Island of Blood I should know I have the book the addition and Prince Althran's griffin! Wasn't it Caladris who took them ALL down? He like tapped into th Ulthane and fried the skaven's asses.
If you say so. I didn't read the novel, so I don't really know the fluff about the battle.
However, in terms of gameplay, we have to consider that the content of the Island of Blood starter set is clearly not in favour of our beloved evil rat race. The High Elves overpower the Skaven by almost 300 points!
As always, GW doesn't want the evil army from its starter sets to win, may it be in the official story or on tabletop.
That's sad, because it's so good to be bad, isn't it?
It's awesome to be evil! And I know this is coming from someone who likes High Elves(not sure why) but other than them the evil races are always much more fun to play such as Necrons, Tyranids, Vampire Counts, Tomb Kings and so on!
i disagree...i personally dont beleive the skaven could take over the world
the reason being is their cowardice and cunning nature. if they all got together then their would be a leader...if that happend some one, maybe an assassin, would infiltrate the skaven lair and take out their leader. This person would prolly be shadowblade
@CurseoftheGarrett Well, to be honest, I don't know much about the WFB universe (prefer W40k).
However, IMHO, I would say that the Skaven should not be underestimated. First they have powerfull beasts, war machines, assassins and warlocks. Then they can count on their number. Finally, their underground network is an unpenetrable fortress.
But still, you are right : they are cowards and unstable. Skaven will probably never rule the world, but unlike other races, they cannot possibly be destroyed.
@MrSpatull ACTUALLY they can rule the world, the council of 13 are like gods to the skaven, they hold so much power they are not to be trifled with, the great Archaon the ever-chosen (a chaos champion who killed like a 1000 blood letters and then killed a 100 Gdaemon to get the title) had to ask skaven for help (because he would be going through their territory and land and did not want to fight them, he offered slaves as payment, skaven agreed heck skaven killed Valten the guy who beat Archaon
they could literally kill all the world leaders no problem, send a few Eshing assassins, they killed Valten that way, BUT they don't want that, see skaven love the fact that most people think of them as myths and fiction (its true most of warhammer world does not believe in the existence of skaven) they could kill all the world leaders, but then their secret will be out and people will start properly hunting them (which they don't want)
@MrSpatull the skaven are what i call smart...don't underestimate them by saying they're cowards, they're the lot that prefer to attack an enemy when he's at the weakest, for hit and run tactics they're the best and their tunnel network allows them to pop out anywhere in the world for quick raids and like all rats when cornered they can put up a vicious fight
If the Skaven were able to take over the world they would be ruled by the Council of Thirteen, not by a lone figure with the exception of the Horned Rat himself.
Quality video, you've got some very nice pics in there and the timing is very good.

@MegaMetalDemon Fluffvise theyre not in 40K.
But gamevise they are simmilar to the tyranids, swarms of lesser creatures led by bigger ones and if their leader is killed the army crumbles.

Skaven.
Weaker than humans but faster (weaker is based on lore, not on gameplay)
Weaker and slower than elves but more durable (same as above)
Then of course there is their leadership..... they are cowards/well developed surival instinct :P
Sweddude 4 months ago
If there's one race, smart enough to build vast spaceships and colonise other worlds, it's the Skaven.
So why are there no Skaven in 40K?
Because GW made a mistake... ;) There, I said it.
