@knitjunky You can, if you have extra very light weight small size needles. I prefer to use fine yarn or even embroidery floss as it doesn't impact the fabric as I'm working and adds no weight to the work. That way I can leave them all in while I'm working just in case he unthinkable happens and I find a missed mistake. It's one of Murphy's laws -- use lifelines and you won't need them; skip them and you'll be ripping back.

You could use a #2 circular needle in place of waste yarn and you wouldn't have to remount the stitches onto a needle after ripping back.
