As the years of heavy trains would pass , the ballast (stones) turns to dust which called Slurr . it then deteriorates the old style wooden rail ties ( sleepers) . this machines replaced any where from 15 to 25 of Railroad workers that used to do this by hand and then later smaller machines .
For those of you that don't know what is happening here Imagine a chain saw cutting thru wood - this machine is cutting under the railroad bed underneith the railroad ties removing the rocks, dirt, mud everthing between the ties and underneith them the cutting teeth on this machine are 4 to 5 inches long and about 3/4 to 7/8 thick look at you thumb it's bigger than that and their made of a hardened steel and this machine has alot of cutting teeth - if I remember right it has 750 cutting teeth
One time in many years. It depends on the dirt and sand in the track.
This machine takes out the rocks which are to small and to larges en the sand and dirt and stuff. The good stones go back in the track and later filled with new rocks.
It takes out the stones wich are to small and to big. Also it takes out the sand and mud. When that has happend it brings back the good stones. When this machine has passed, the train with new stones comes and drops new stones where needed.
This proces is needed for nois reduction and better driving for the train.
Why does it matter if the stones are clean or not? The railroad tracks whre I live here in Chicago USA have grass growing between them but still with trans driving every day. it seems to be fine. Obama 2012!!
The problem is that water won't run trough as good/stay there, and then when temperatures go below freezig, the water will expand and can cause deformations to the trackbed. This is a real problem, if it wasn't they wouldn't have these machines. However, if trains are light and drive slow, it's not as big of a deal. Also, if temperatures stay high, there obviously isn't the same concern.

This looks like a very intensive job! Really cool to see that the machine is picking up the track and replaces those stones!
Great vid!

I hope this answers your question :)?

Define many years? 10 or 20 years?
chefjavier 3 years ago
Yeah something like that, depends on how many dirt gets between the stones

what is it doing

It's cleaning the stones under the tracks.
It takes out the stones wich are to small and to big. Also it takes out the sand and mud. When that has happend it brings back the good stones. When this machine has passed, the train with new stones comes and drops new stones where needed.

I hope you understand my answer.
