  • this is magic.

  • This little bit of piano is just fantastic and amazing...I hope the inspiration that behind Paul's thoughts when he played this so long ago come sout in the new album because it was just amazing.......so was clockwork. I was thoroughly dissapointed with Armistice...I hope the next album is like their self titled one

  • @Holmesymom The best part about Armistice was that it was a growing/learning experience for the band. That is why I value both the Self-titled and Armistice equally. Armistice shows a new side of Paul lyrically - I think it's fantastic. I don't know if you follow MuteMath on facebook or whatnot, but Darren said that it is his favorite Album so far (the new one that is - Odd Soul). So, FINGERS CROSSED FOR A WHOLE ALBUM OF AWESOME!

  • I love, love, love, LOVE this and will be forever upset that this wasn't in the new album...just as an instrumental!! It's so amazing.

  • Can anyone explain why this song is not on the new album? or am I just oblivious and it's mixed in somewhere?

  • @cbright28 Apparently, MuteMath made an album and almost finished it. But, the entire band had disagreements on it so they scrapped everything and went back to square one. They started from scratch and their work resulted in "Armistice." I'm guessing that Piano Ratiug was a piece from that scrapped album that never made it's way to the public. It sounded like it had alot of potential. Oh well. But at least "Armistice" is still a great album! Can't wait for their next one! Hope this helped! :)

  • mutemath= music.

  • so freakin cool.

  • This is the true essence to music... writers that can ve completely innovative and unique, and not just write to make money. These guys have something that is amazing and different compared to the other music out there today. Mutemath is it's own genre.

  • @mrhippify Honestly I couldn't have said it any better, 1000000% agreed.

  • I like how the piano is slightly out of tune. It suites the style in my opinion!!

  • @Gquannvr You know, I bet that was intentional. They reverse engineer a lot of their instruments. I guess it's what makes them remarkably original.

  • @henttaii Hey they call them upright-grand pianos. The front is kind of like a grand and the lid usually goes up at an angle like a grand but the strings and hammers go vertical like an upright. Pianos is my job if you hadn't guessed!!

  • I never get tired of hearing/ seeing this. Absolutely awesome, v skillfull.

  • Clever boys!

  • I think it's just a grand piano, but because of the angle of the camera moving across the piano, it looks like a combination. I thought the same thing until I kept looking at it and it only comes up to his face, because the music holder is up.

Perhaps it is a combination, but it just looks like a grand piano without some of the cover pieces.

  • o wow it does sound a bit like Lost Year

  • Videos like this remind me of why I fell in love with music.....and this band.

  • @lilworkerb love it when that happens

  • Don't you realise this Vlog is a demo version of 'Lost Year'? Listen to the tune of the song and the piano part just behind and you'll discover lot of similarities in the way to play. Some notes are different, but the rhythm and the ambiance are the same! :)

  • I will check... Thats what I was going to say .that all this blogs they uploaded supposedly were going to be parts of songs in the new album but I havent heard this parts on any song.I think they were just ideas........... I'll check your comment.

  • this sounds like a demo for clipping or something

  • You know what, the piano in Clipping easily tops this.

  • to all of you who went to a listening party, please tell me this is on the album!

  • no...most of these studio vlog's aren't...

  • This IS on the new album! But not on the same version. This appears on the tune of the song 'Lost Year' with some changes.

  • Comment removed

  • your an idiot... get some piano and record it... then play it backwards... see what happens

  • you are retarded

  • I already listened to their entire Armistice album in a MuteMath listening party and I can tell you IT IS AWESOME!!! Everyone is gonna LOVE it! Can't wait for August 18th....

  • hell yeah dude, where at? I was in their bus this past Friday listening to it in Kansas City outside the Beaumont.

  • Isnt it awesome??!! I seriously enjoyed the entire album! Mine was at Club Nokia next to the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California....

  • hey, so was this ratiug in any of the songs? or what? because it sounds really nice and i was just wondering if it made the CD or not

  • you to be honest with you... I dont recall ratiug being within any of the songs. I only listened to it once so i really don't remember. But even if this isnt in the album, it will still satisfy, i promise. :)

  • Hell yea bring it on. This is gonna be amazing.

  • And here it comes. Bring on August 18th 2009.

  • You can hear it...they went to another place for this album.

  • I die a little inside listening/watching mute math's amazingness!!

  • goddamn the new album is gonna be so fuckin insane! can't wait!

  • Gosh I love you guys!

  • This album is coming out April 19, right? Or did it get pushed back?

  • tbh now i'm not even sure. Paul Meany says the cd is finished, so, that means it must be in production. But an interview with Darren says its coming out in August... we'll see, I don't thikn they're gonna wait that long :)

  • I hope to god they don't wait that long

  • OMg thats my birthday! if thats really the case, i'll be getting the best birthday present ever =D

  • I heard it was like...coming out in July or something.

  • I have just finished being introduced to this band...what is the name of this song? Or is it going to be one on their new album?

  • wahey another friend of MuteMath's is another friend of mine! This song is probably (as in, hopefully) gonna be on their new album it only has the name Piano Ratiug (guitar backwards). Literally this is as new to you as it is to existing fans. WELCOME! (I have one of the song set list sheets from a gig I went to! Sweet! And I've touched his back.... crowd surfing:)! )

  • There new album is gonna be IMMENSE!!! They should have finished it by now. Just making loadsa copies! I just learnt to play this on the piano.... sounds cool.

  • good stuff!!!!

  • this guys are going to blow away with their new album

    im soooooooooo pumped

  • guys, you definately rock, hope to see you in europe!!!!Respect from Latvia.!!

  • Oh man, I love MuteMath sooooo much. This just gives me goosebumps listening to this. :D

  • same, I can NOT wait for their next album!!!! its killing me!

  • Comment removed

  • anyone know if this is available as sheet music?

  • Why the delay for the new album?

  • I can't wait for the new album.

Anyone know when it's coming out?

  • in march

  • i just read the other day that darren said it would be out in august.

  • it will be out in march, they have been working on it since summer 08

  • it was supposed to be out in march. actually it was supposed to be out like last year, but then they scrapped it and started over. And now it has been delayed again.

  • GODDAMN i have been waiting ages for the new album... first they say late last year but nothing yet. Are they going release an EP at least anytime soon?

  • I heard they're going to release the EP on February 10.

  • dude i hope your right because you just made me extremely excited and hyped for this EP

  • no thats like a preview of the new album, the album is coming out march

  • Hey dude the EP is awesome got it the other day.. and the real album is coming out this summer.. at least thats what I heard..

  • yeah i got it too, not as good as i thought it would be... just a bunch of remakes spotlight but clockwork is FUCKING AMAZING

  • agree'd - I made a music video using Clockwork recently - check it on my channel :)

  • I heard it was March or May this year. Of course it was meant to be last year though! haha

  • Didn't they use this for that movie Twilight?? This sounds like one of the parts of the movie..

  • oh my gosh *.*

  • paul says hes gonna change it up for the new album. i loved the first but i say bring it on! what was so great about the first album was that it was DIFFERENT.. cant wait for their new stuff

  • this is amazing

  • fucking sick!!! i cant wait

  • What a tune!

  • I'm so excited for the new album! This was a great vid :) i'm expecting nothing less than perfection from this album with how long it's taking!

  • Cool - I can't wait to hear that piano part in the context of the new album!

  • GUYS this is all I get until SPRING OF 2009? HOW COULD YOU?

  • I am so horny right now!!! K

  • Please, i cant wait to see you soon in europe!

Im from Spain, come to Madrid please!!!

  • that sounds amazing!!i can't wait to hear everything all put together..mm is one of those bands where i really wish i was there watching them, and hearing them put this album together...they are just amazing

  • the thing i love most about mm..is that you can totally tell that they love thier music!!

i mean just look at him..hes getting more out of it than we are.

they just have mad passion about what they do and thats rare

  • when it gets to the guitar part does anyone else hear someone talking?

  • yeah someone said something, i heard it to

  • Is there a reason I can't view this on an iPhone? I keep looking for it and can't find it, and when I go to the Mute Math page, other videos will load but this one (and all the vlog ones) won't.

  • What type of guitar effect is that? It's insanely cool.

  • I think it's called "Backwards".

  • Lolism.

  • I think i would be man enough to cry at one of their performances

Mute Math is the beyond the shit

They are the best that New Orleans can be proud to say they originated from.

  • Aww.

  • The way they sustain sounds wraps up so much emotion. And it isn't just noise like holding down the sustain pedal on a piano; they really put thought into the organization of their chaos. Amazing.

  • oh damn..they show greg playin the guitar backwards!!

    CANNOT..WAIT...ANY...LONGER.....

  • are u serious? about the playing backwards thing?

  • yea...check out his fingers, and the word guitar is spelled backwards in the video title

  • this is still my favorite video that you guys have posted...i could listen to this piano on loop forever and ever and ever.........

  • this is the song on the new album that I am most looking forward to. has anyone tried playing any of their vids on top of each other (at the same time). if you get the right selection it could make a WHOLE TRACK, subtle! coz I saw a vid on here of darren on his own, and the double basist on his own. anyway. agggh cant wait

  • I was thinking about doing that, but it would be a lot of work...i still might...

  • Actually, I think that's true. I've figured out that at the very least, this clip and Lavatory Loops go together, if not Hyperbass as well. They all have this distinctive ~6.5 second lull in them. In this one, it's about half way through, right before the guitar starts. In Lav Loops, it's when it cuts to Paul tapping the pen. I can't really tell you about Hyperbass, because it's sped up by 70%, but the lull is there.

  • Sorry, that was meant to be a reply to banksyart and explodyhead who posted about 4 months ago about getting the audio from different vid clips and layering them together to make a whole.

  • yeah, man, I figured that they were related somehow, and for the clapping one, I noticed that was in their Twilight track. still no idea where the hyperbass goes, but it might just fit in there somewhere.

  • Interestingly, lining the audio here up with the audio from Lavatory Loops causes the audio from this clip to begin right at the same time that Darren hits that... whatever it is in Lavatory Loops, the marking of when things start to get played backwards. Figuring out where Hyperbass goes, if it goes here at all is more difficult for me. But I'm almost certain the other 2 go. It's really hard to get the timing right though. =D

  • how do you know all these parts go together in the same song?

  • Well, I don't know for sure exactly. But it seems like they go together because they all have a slight pause in them that lasts for about 6.5 seconds. If you'd like to see what I mean, you can download a very useful, free sound editing program called audacity, first link if you search google. Once you install that, if you download the project files that I've posted about on audacityteam's forum in the "Lounge" section, you'll see.

  • Just open up several internet pages, each one a different youtube video, and play them all at once.

  • easier said than done.

  • wonderful, cant wait to the new album, I hope these guys come back through on another tour

  • loved the way this clip began. honestly i feel it should be the beginning to the next video they film for the new album. soo beautiful. im sooo anticipating their next release.

  • Paul's keywork always gives me chills.

    I'm stoked on this album

good work guys, Come back to Calgary again soon too please?!?

  • My head is going to explode. I need new Mute Math.

  • Couldn't have put it better myself.

  • I must say, I'm so excited!!!!

  • How about a little Guitar Onaip?

I bet that would sound awesome.

  • This is still my favorite video yet of the making of the 2nd album

  • MM, how do you be so amazing? :P

    Honestly.

  • OMG...I can just imagine this as one of the opening tracks. I've never been so excited for an album in my life!

  • if no one else got this the title says Piano Ratuig. which is guitar spelled backwards. in the video, the guitar is tracked backwards.

  • this album is going to be more than amazing... is there a word for that?

  • great playing

  • Lets hear it for Brandon Goodwin!

the brilliant film making is making these little previews even more magical.

  • this new album is gonna be off the chaaaaaain. They go from strength to strength.

  • Haha, I accidentally watched the first 22 seconds of this video with no sound.

I recommend giving it a go. You'll be pleasantly surprised, and possibly be driven to giggle.

Anyways, I've never been so excited about an album in my life, and I'm an avid music lover. I sincerely hope this track is on the album.

  • LIke all your videos, amazing, i think this would make a great opening track. I don't know if you guys are actually considering this track and/or the lavatory loops to be on the album but either way they are amazing for just messing around!

  • It looks and sounds to me like the piano is being mixed into a track.

I'm sure those cats have hours of mind blowing jam sessions like this while coming up with ideas for tracks. I'm sure a lot of seemingly great stuff doesn't make the cut.

Can't wait for the new album.

  • i think i could watch this video about a half a million times and not be tired of it. i am going to take a hiatus from the world when new album comes out in september...and spend about a week doing nothing but listening

  • I can really picture how perfectly marvelous this album will be. I haven't been this hyped for a new album release in YEARS. I WILL have this album the very day it is released.

  • ^THIS.

Every one of these clips has me extremely excited. but none more than this one. I'm prepared to be amazed.

  • can't wait. CAN'T WAIT.

  • AGREEEEEEE

  • call me stupid, but i just figured out why they spell guitar backwards (ratiug). I thought it sounded like it was being played backwards, and yeah, the guitar effects are coming through in reverse playback (inspiration from the typical video, perhaps?). and yes, this piano hook WILL NOT get out of my head!

  • I totally agree! I just LOVE the piano hook too...I listen to it a LOT. And this is just a preview of what's to come...can you just imagine? It gives me goosebumps

  • i really enjoy these little video logs... they help keep up with the band. I think Mute Math is an extraordinarily brilliant example for other bands to follow...

  • funny, at first i wasnt crazy bout this one but its really grown on me ive replayed it like 10 times today

  • Oh man. I totally tried playing them both at the same time. It totally sounds wicked sweet!!!! Man I am so stoked for the new album.

  • "We're sorry this video is no longer available"

    Anyone else getting this message?

  • this album is going to be *it* the album that makes mutemath....ugh, i don't even want to explain it. you know. if people don't know them yet

  • I'd personally suggest opening both this video and the "Lavatory Loops" video, and hit play on that one about 21 seconds into this one. You may be pleasantly surprised.

  • oh holy crap.

  • Can you poretty please explain more about how you do this? i understand already about opening the windows, but how does the time work?

  • Yeah, i kinda see how you could think they go together, but in my honest opinion, I think they're different songs. The time signature/speed seems to be a little different. But I could be wrong. If you caught it and it really does go together, props to you. How long did it take you to get that to work? Took me like 25 tries, lol.

  • To each their own, of course, but I think the fact that the time signatures are different yet the keys and tempos are basically identical is really more of a sign that Mute Math is trying to integrate polyrhythms into their music. If that's true, then we're in for an album that will truly be one of the most epic releases in many, many years.

Also, it took me a good 10 tries before I could get them to sync really well. That's what working with Youtube gets you...

  • Pwcasellini, thank you so much

  • MONTREAL love Mute Math

unfortunately i had an exam when you guys came to montreal for that CRAZY show talked about in the dvd...But i did catch u guys another time....one of the best shows of my life....u guys are one of the selec few bands that i can listen to and think...wow ive not heard this before anywhere else....unlike other bands who just recycle stuff.....

    god bless u guys

  • I love playing the ratiug!

Thanks for frequent updates, they do so much for us!

  • Just realised that Ratiug was "guitaR" spelled backwards. eciN.

  • oh snap!!!

  • they should have a song called guitar oanip!

  • Do you mean onaip?

A pinao is a dragonfly in Hawaii.

  • you mean "onaip"?

  • this album is going to be amazing, cant wait for it.

you guys really need to get over here and blow every ones head off!!!!

we need more radio play from you guys as well, can never have enough mute math!!!!!

  • I love what your doing with this channel :D I love seeing the creative process. Keeps your listeners (me) in the loop! More should do this.

  • I am speechless. I love everything you've released thus far, but I have a special affinity to the piano. And Paul, you have given me goose bumps. You are just beyond amazing. Thank you for this video - I can't wait

  • Agreed. Especially on the piano part. I love love love the piano and its beautiful sound, and this video just blows me out of the water.

  • oh man...absolutely can't wait

  • This album's gonna be ill, no doubt about it. But I gotta say that after a year and a half, I'm still amazed by the first one. The new one's just gonna make me explode!

  • israel + mute math= mind blown

  • you guys truly make me happy

  • I am dying with anticipation of this album. No one else can really comprehend. Seriously. This album needs to come out as soon as possible. I am in need of new Mute Math tunes!

  • this is going to be a great album, based off the sneak peeks they've put up it will dominate

  • I can't stop listening to it!

  • great..........

  • I thought the Reset EP was amazing, and couldn't get any better. Then you released your self titled album...and I thought "No way...it can't get better". And now...you're making this album. I'm so excited to be proven wrong again. This is going to be AMAZING!!

  • yes

  • Holy, you're using an actual piano. An adorably beaten-up upright piano just like mine.

MAN I love this band. And Paul is a really good pianist, which is awesome.

  • ratiug......guitar

  • Beautiful! Thanks for giving us sneak peeks!

  • mute math is so good, they make me wanna cry

  • Only Paul can play on a crappy spinnet piano like that and make it sound groovy. Can't wait to hear more!

  • I love you guys! Sounds really really awesome... can't wait for the new album! :-)

  • now that's awsome. that sounds better than the stuff on the first album.

  • AMAZING. I'm so pumped for the new Album. Seems like its going to have a lot of depth. cant wait.

  • M U T E M A T H

    Just, wow.

  • this song is haunting, but in such a beautiful, absolutely beautiful way.

    gave me more chill's

  • that just happened.

  • my heroes!
