  • This song was number one on the pop charts in my home town the weeks ending August 18th and August 19th, 1967. A great song.

  • Hey MrPhillyrick1, I agree. LOL (the 8 people who dislike this song are clearly disturbed)

  • Bettye had a daughter...if memory serves me her name was Adrian, Audrina...in that 'A' name family. Please, anyone having a line on this family please email me Toinado@yahoo.com

  • ANYONE having any contact information for Bettye Swann-Barton please contact me at Toinado@yahoo.com

My parents were friends of Bettye and her husband George and fell out of touch after many moves and years. I'd like to surprise both my mom and Bettye.

Bettye was not only an outstanding writer and vocalist, she is just a really wonderful woman. I marveled at her going from down to earth Bettye to a beauty in evening gown heading to center stage!

  • OMG I used to style that same white dress in junior high. Just KNEW I was the s*it

  • MUSIC AND ARTIST LIKE THIS HAVE GONE ONLY TO BE HAD IN OUR MEMORY, AND OF COURSE THROUGH YOUTUBE

  • A #1 hit for Bettye Swan on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 161 #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #21 on the Top 40 charts.

  • My Goodness That Voice I can still hear my Momma singing this song as she cooked in the kitchen. Good Memeories

  • Omg! This is my Family....my mom use to play your records for me while she was cooking or cleaning!!! Love This

  • @TexasThickChick : I know girl!! I still have to play old school when I clean on Saturday mornings with the windows and doors open. Nothing else works.

  • @TexasThickChick : I know girl!! I still have to play old school when I clean on Saturday mornings with the windows and doors open. Nothing else works.

  • @MoRo07 Thought I was the only one who did

  • I like it.

  • Haha this is some extreme stereo happening

  • I found this single in an Omaha antique store, molderin' away in a box...I only bought it because of the label--glad that I did!

  • What a CLASSIC!! Music was Music!!!

  • I love this song. My siblings and used to sit in my parents' bed at night and sing along with the song when we were living in Newark, NJ. Brings back sweet memories. Thank you for posting.

  • This song needs a "LOVE IT" button, the like it button is not enough....

  • When I was in middle and high school, my girlfriends and I would sing this song through the halls. Our classmates loved and enjoyed this song. Free concert. These are lyrics, and Bettye sings it with such conviction, and well pronounced. She isn't dragging over the words. Yo can understand what she's saying and singing.

  • What a classic :) Love it

  • i'm so glad i discovered this! amazing music!

  • Oh does this song bring back memories to me. I sung this song in a talent show and we rocked the house. And listening to it now really takes me back. Thanks for posting it.

  • i like this song!!! KTF

  • Man i love this song!...

My mother in law put me on to this..

    i loved it every since!!!

  • one of those golden hits again, from back in my childhood! FANTASTIC!!

  • This song evokres so many good memories of my youth, although I was only 10yrs old when this song came out, it still sounds as sweet today as it did 44 yrs ago....Good music is timeless.....

  • OMG, i'm so glad there are still sooooo many of us who love REAL music. This is great. I've been looking for this for years. Thanks sandfordway and youtube.

  • love it!!!

  • This song makes one feel what music realy "IS". Every time I here it, I break down, dance, snap my finger, call someone that I love and feel happy with my life. That is how strong, and how much, I love this song.

  • @bassreflexwoofer12

I know exactly what you feel!

  • Where

    Did

    She

    Come

    From!

    WOW******

  • I am at work and suppose to be working but the music won't let me do right!

  • Homegirl is from my hometown. What a coincidence. Favorites growing, likes, subscriptions; WOW!

  • Man I love this song....

  • One of my favourite female soul singers

  • oh james how i wish you will make me yours i love you and i want to married you

  • Oh how I miss the 60s when songs were sweet and mellow and composers wrote from the heart and singers sang from the heart and despite the social issues of the day, somehow it still seems like it was just the greatest musical decade. Thanks for the memories.

  • Songs about love were played out, even when this song was written. Songs about love have completely lost all meaning because it's the easiest and least creative thing to write songs about.

I wish people who played this kind of music were more thoughtful, and sang about real art, rather than repeating age old love lines that they heard from artists before them.

  • @Playcircus omg! Love songs always have meaning! They're not played out as artists are still making love songs to this day! What "real art" do you want the artists to sing about? This music is pleasant and doesn't degrade anyone, especially women (i'm not saying you like bad music lol)!

  • this music hold so much pleasent memories for me i remember my mother playing this back in the days.thank you youtube for bringin bac some wondeful memories.

  • COME ON JAMES SMITH MAKE ME YOURS I LOVE YOU DEARLY

  • DIS IS MY MOMMIE'S SONG!!!!!!(RIP)

  • This song is the best English language song made ever! i love her voice

  • My mom played this song often when I was a child....

  • this takes me back to 1972 . we had a great night at the mecca. but got pulled in by the drugs squad as we travelled out of blackpool so we spent a few hours at blackpool cop shop then they let us go . chris kemp was driving it was a sunny morning this was playing in the car as we headed back to stoke i was young and in love still married to the same girl

  • Yeah these an others take me back. When love was so innocent and pure. Luv this. whoever posted this put these songs together, great job. One you could add is Betty Wright song. Girls can't do what the guys do.

  • One of the many songs that I heard on WFIL Radio here in Philadelphia during the Summer of Love, 1967, when I was on ly 9 years old.

  • Sweet, sweet, sweet what u need baby I got it and what u got crazy about it

  • This is the type of music that nourishes the soul. I hope to live long enough to again see the love the black people expressed toward each other when we were wearing dashikis and had big afros and the music was about falling in love and caring for each other.

  • I love the separation in the mix. Authentic old school.

  • Who is singing with her?

  • @2hot2trot most likely, it's just a session singer or it's just her voice on two different tracks mixed together.

  • @theylied1776 Whatever or however they did it, it's beautiful. I love this song. Thanks much for sharing it.

  • I wish she had a website, so I could buy her album and know that she's getting the money! I read on wikipedia she has a degenerative spinal condition? so unfair

  • Now this one i love others have sang it but i think she is the best.

  • My favorite Bettye Swann Song....a lady with great talent!...Thanks for sharing.

  • Stood in front of my full-length mirror, holding my baton for a microphone and sang my heart out to this song....

"All of my friends said "Girl, don't"...but I know what I need and I know what I want..."

    Thanks.....Jan

  • i have the Bettye version but i do prefer Z.Z.Hill's

  • What can be said about Bettye Swan? She was the soul "Diva" with this song and "My Heart Is Closed For The Season".

  • My mom played this song so much when I was a kid...

  • nice version but cheek out Z Z Hills Version

  • @JazzFunkSouldier while that is also a good version..check out the phyllis dillon version..pure rocksteady bliss

  • THIS SOUL SMASH peaked at Number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July of 1967, but was a NUMBER ONE R & B SMASH!

  • @christheone8773 this kind of music soes your gooood. There was just so much beauty in music back in the day, it had meaning ,soul and inspiration and it still hasn't gotten old to me. Thank you to who ever put this up. twinsis58

  • We played this 45 until it was white! Loved this song! Never get tired of it...

  • @svi9 NOW THATS FUNNY, BUT THIS IS REAL MUSIC FROM BACK IN THE DAY WHEN TIMS WERE NOT AS STRANGE WHEN PEOLPLE UNDERSOOD THE TRUE MEANNING OF love.

  • @drsthurman I totally agree. Because even as a child growing up and listening to this, it made you think how in love she must be and how listening to it made you feel. Great music can definitely do that.

  • @svi9 But the thing about it all is how did ppl grow to be so nasty, No respect no values on life anymore and most inportant where has all the LOVE gone, but one thing they must beleive as said in the Emotions song FLOWER "GOD IS WATCHING YOU" and you make sure you have a very blesses day and keep listing because there is!! a message in the music. and that message means PEACE OF MIND listening to music.

  • @drsthurman Well, there are divisions along economic lines, and in America, just for an example, that may go from one extreme to the other.

  • @drsthurman

    Thank you!

  • Hey now!!!!!

  • Home from Viet Nam ridding with cousin Jimmy King in Batesville, MS 1967 the first time I heard it great song. James Jones

  • mii uncle freakiing had me lookiing for thiis song for a long tiime... l0l

  • Sweet, sweet soul music. Where did it go?

  • For note: She Wrote this song as well as performed it.

There were women songwriters out there than are generally known.

  • Sho Nuff

  • OMG the ultimate women song back then.....played out n every hood in Detroit back then.

  • My jam

  • oldie but damn goodie!

  • brill tune cheers ktf

  • fenomenal!!!!!

  • Bettye Swann does the definitive original version of this lovely soulful song, but Robin Pluer of the R&B Cadets sings a perfectly heart-tugging cover of it. Please, somebody post that on YouTube.

    splendid lyrics truthful words.

  • a beautiful lady sounds a little like betty wright

  • Thanks!!! I had that moment in 20`s!! It just wasn`t God`s will and I learn to live w/ it!!!!

  • I love this song. Everytime I listen to this song I think about the wonderful husband that I have. It makes me appreciate everything that I have. This would be a good wedding song. It is a very romantic but yet fun song. It's the kind of song to dance to and yet appreciate at the same time. Classy song.! love it!

  • I was 11 or 12 still living in N.O. when I bought this 45. Still have the 45 and still play it...it's getting a little white and worn but I can still hear it.

  • I've always enjoyed this song, but I had never seen her picure. She is very attractive; I am surprised she did not have a bigger career. In today's era, recording companies would have invested more into her material to capitalize on her beauty.

  • Today is the first time I've ever heard this song. My mother and Bettye Champion grew up together, and my mom would tell me stories about their friendship, religious views, and her singing career. This is a lovely song.

  • Hello sandfordway

I have to admit I am very impressed with the quality of your videos here on youtube.

They are certainly a pleasure to watch as I do enjoy them.

I am sure there is many others who also feel the same about your videos.

  • My Mom had some 14 Brothers and Sisters, and when they all got together what a time we had! There's only Mom, one Brother and one Sister now, but when I Listen to this Song, I can see their Loving Faces, and a Beatiful sunny day on the Hill where I lived in Sallis, Miss. off highway 14 so Mrs. Swan, may GOD Bless, and Keep You, "Thanks for the Memories. she has such a beautiful voice..

  • All credit to the late Dave Godin for spreading the word on this timeless gem in the UK - via his column in Blues & Soul. Often cited by Dave as his "all-time favourite Soul recording", it was released on CBS in the UK, and was later reissued on Mojo. Jackie Moore released a nice version, on Kayvette in 1977.

  • great song!

  • I love this song. Ann Peebles also does a good job with this song.

  • I'm only 24 and I love this song!!! I just called my mom and let her listen to it and she still remembers the words! And she's 61! Thank you for posting!

  • That's because she was only 19 or 20 and this was the kind of music we got in Chicago only to realize daily that Vietnam was taking so many young men from their familes. If you enjoy this, listen to "Tell Him" by Patty Drew. bilbo2shire

  • Oh how I remember this one. Thanks for posting it.

  • back in 1965 when i was 12, i had a gf who lived in KS and I was in Mass and this was our song. I know this sounds simple, but back then she was my everythang and this song was our bond.

  • I love this song. I am so glad I found it. Thanks for posting it.

  • she had a nice voice

  • My mother use to make us listen to her old sings back in the day, I always liked this song.

  • "Good Things ComeTo Those Who Wait...But Don'tWait Too LOng"...that's her other classic

  • This song, as so many have stated brings back some wonderful memories. I was only ten at the time, but I had older cousins who played this song at all the parties, and I'll never forget our family parties with unforgettable friends. What a song!!! A classic for many, many years to come.

  • Wow!..Do I remember this!...puts these singers masquerading a "soul singers" today to shame. and i try not to talk that way too much..but this lady is sho nuff the real deal

  • Awesome I was 16 and this sounds as good now as it did then thanks for the posting. I'm still jamming

  • This was my favorite Bettye Swann song. So many memories.

  • in high school my best friend and I loved this song..great memories...

  • Class tune Love this one. :c) Ktf

  • love this track...

    one of my favs...

    ktf.....

  • TOP TUNE !!!!

  • What a beautiful song. Every time I listen to it I feel like she's singing it to me. The words tell a story that you can write a book, a movie out of it. She made it a # 21 hit on the billboard charts in 1967 and I'm dumbfounded she didn't score a dozen more just like it. She had the talent but I guess the wrong management. If I were her manager I would have taken her to Motown or Atlantic records & she would have been a superstar with such a lovely voice with such conviction. What say you!!

  • i was born and raised in Africa, i remember hearing her song " make my yours " for the first time. i did not understand a word she was saying, just fall in love with her voice. here i am in my 40's still adore her. i don't think anybody replaced her beutiful voice. God bless you Betty.

  • I saw Bettye Swann LIVE in ,68/'69 on a show with the 5 Stairsteps,Trone Davis & others. She was GREAT,not only vocally but beautiful with great stage presense.

  • Know you talking now, Tone that's what they should do with Motown 50, do the old Motown travelilng circuit, but alas that's not going to be the case, although everyone's supposed to be there.

    Sy-

  • was it at the regal in chitown?

  • i looooooooooooove this song

  • Just adore Bettye Swanns voice, love this song but my favourite is 'You gave me love' which sadly i could sing to my exhusband, still feel the guilt and pain of what i did, and this song sums it up!

  • If only I had read the info section I would've known why her heart was so warm, she serves "The True God".Guess what Ms. Bettye,I know "Jehovah",I'm working my way back, finding you is truly encouraging,"Seek And You Will Find".
