I don't like Ubuntu either. I however still love Linux. Find a better distro. There are many good ones out there. Linux is supposed to be modular for a reason. That's the great thing about Linux though.... there's far more to choose from.
Installed Ubuntu 9.04 today on an old PC today, because "ubuntu runs so great on old PCs" (P4 2.2GHz, 1GB ram, 80GB).
- Ubuntu installation, 1 hour. XP, 35 minutes
- Install available updates, 2:30 hours. XP 25 minutes
- Install flash for youtube, 10 minutes. XP 1 minute
- youtube clips stutters like hell, on XP it runs perfectly
- Run a youtube clip in full scrren in ubuntu: THE WHOLE FUCKING INSTALLATION BECAME CORRUPT AND I AM CURENTLY REINSTALLING!! On XP the other hand youtube works great.
yeh ubuntu does suck if you arent good at "command" whatever and finding webpages that take you to 100000 other webpages before you can install the required driver.and plus it doesnt even have an interactive tool that shows new users on how to use it.its just for those computer guys who like to type, hate colour and hate to make stuff easy.and yeh its even a hugh task to get your mic to work ;P
Ubuntu was my first Linux distro I learned on. Been 2 years now and now I can see how unstable and unreliable it really is. Running pure Debian 5 now and much happier.

Wow almost 9 minutes of talking... what a waste... It looks like the user sucks and doesnt know what the hell he's doing... Ubuntu is human friendly, not idiot friendly

lol I quit using ubuntu...too many errors And doesent work good playing games in FULLSCREEN I use windows XP...oh btw I typed this on my phone so spelling isent as good!
Ubuntu only sucks because of the many freaking bugs it has. XP is good only for gaming (right now).
I think Debian rules, but I haven't tried it yet. Ubuntu has lots of bugs and security issues. Debian is VERY stable.
And duh, pimpstainley. My ubuntu based freaking distro works fuking well in my hp. laptop, which sucks, and it works just "fine", except for the general issues, 'cause it is a fucked up version of debian. The biggest piece of shit os I have ever tried is windows vista. XP is ok.
You Suck! If there was a way to give negative stars, i would so give it to you. Hounestly. There is no purpose of this video and wtf is wrong with audio?
ubuntu live cd dont work on many pc's, nvidia drivers are totally fcuked up 177 and up on feisty, intrepid, you name it, wifi DONT work right out the box you gotta do a whole buncha custom shit to get it working like linux-backport-drivers-module-generic shit, only thing i like about ubuntu is the customer support.. the forums is huge just google anything and you'll find the solution
was that thing really built off debian technology? it sucks so bad.. i highly recommend red hat or fedora because those two actually work and can probe/detect hardware 100% unlike this ubuntu, kubuntu, fluxbuntu, minty linux, peice of shits i swear whoever developed those distros needs to shoot theirselfs
how the fcukin hell can you say ubuntu ownz and it works like a charm? its the biggest peice of shit OS i ever tried to install OH AND I HAVENT HAD ANY SUCCESS INSTALLING IT YET.. feisty, gutsy, every kernel, every distro, frequent system halts, installer sucks so bad it fails at every step, i could also go on about its total incompatibility with Compaq, HP, and DELL laptops, dont even say ubuntu ownz because it doesnt even work on most PC's
What the fuck are you talking about? It works amazing with all PC and laptops. Kubuntu is a distro made for laptops, and it works well. And you haven't had any success installing it, you must be a dumbshit
I really don't like people who criticize Windows. Take a look at the history of stupid Mac and Linux? I deal with Linux every day and it's driving me crazy. Even Solaria Gnome sucks. It took Linux to go Graphical (i.e. like windows) in almost 20 years. Why should I go Linux, if it takes it so long. And what the hell is wrong with Mac and all those childish designs and stupid keyboards and mouse. I can't believe people buy that crap. Microsoft has its issues, but it'll rock again. No Offense, all
The only thing I dislike about gentoo is sitting around waiting for things to compile, which is one reason why I prefer Arch. Both are excellent, though.
xp is ok, its definitely the best windows. ubuntu is good for beginners or if you have a good computer. gentoo is probably one of the best IF you know what you're doing, its not practical for most people. i'm actually dling arch right now because i heard it was good
According to arstechnica in today's news, "Wikipedia adopts Ubuntu for its server infrastructure".
Ubuntu just keeps on spreading, despite the tiny cries, IMO, from the mouse holes still running proprietary software infected with the point and click retardation virus.
Keep on enjoying your proprietary anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-trojan, anti-adware, anti-this and anti-that software, and scanning your drives while funding a monopoly.
Ubuntu doesn't suck, IMO people who continue to fund proprietary software suck. People who are used to and continue to recommend closed document/media formats and lock-in suck.
Ubuntu is less professional and is seemingly less compatible than openSuSE. This is only because Ubuntu doesn't come preloaded with as many libraries as SuSE does. It's also a bit easier to install and is much more customizable.
i'd have to disagree with the customization but i suppose the rest is true. i'm not really sure why your rating is so bad, yo'ure still supporting linux and opensuse is older, as far as i'm aware
My rating isn't necessarily bad. 8.10 is loads better than 8.04 and I can start saying that it is on the road to becoming more pro. I still like to use Ubuntu from time to time. openSuSE just seems a little more "open". I don't really know how to explain it.
Linux IS NOT better than Windows or in anyway designed to replace any other operating system.
Like any other distribution it is merely a community developed and supported operating system based on the linux kernel.
Hardware is better supported in windows as the majority of users use it thus some not all manufacturer's do not see the point in supporting linux leaving driver support upto the community which in my opinion they are doing well meaning hardware problems are being fixed in new releases
This guy is right. I left Windows over a year ago, and while I have had no major Ubuntu Linux problems, I am having a shit-load of small ones. The most recent one involves my advanced desktop settings to all of a sudden stop working, and the system telling me I don't have xgl installed. Yet I do.
I don't like Windows because I feel like I have to run a spysweep and virus check every friggin 10 minutes. But the more I get into Ubuntu, the more it is sucking.
Linux fans will say, "maybe you need more computing knowledge... blah blah blah." Guess what jack-asses? I have 100 other things to worry about from day to day, most of them involve life away from a computer. I don't have 3 hours to dedicate to every little problem that needs fixing on an OS that should work.
You want Linux to go mainstream and kick windows in the sack.. news flash.. it's going to have to get more user friendly and intuitive to use.
If you need Ubuntu support and have Ubuntu installed, first try Google and the Ubuntu pages to see if the problem hasn't been encountered by others (It usually has) or try clicking applications - add or remove - Xchat. Set it up and delve into the world of real-time support on the Ubuntu IRC servers. Give it a whirl. Good luck!
Or just run a real OS that doesn't need "support" to figure out how to do every little simple thing.
Ubuntu is flaky, useless garbage that works on just enough hardware to piss off 1% of computer users with its persistent crashes, bugs, and refusal to do anything useful. Good thing there's an angry mob of mindless nerd drones who ENJOY wasting their time fixing the same things that break and re-break with every release. Thanks for Ubuntu, Communism!
Heh... flaky. That's a humorous, though inaccurate adjective. Ubuntu takes knowledge of the operating system as it doesn't provide every little convenience, but is more than capable of meeting the base needs for most tasks provided that base information is there or one is proficient in using google.
It takes an impatience, ignorance, or the need for higher level software for a user to have a bad Linux experience. Fortunately, there are enough decent computer users to make your mindset obsolete.
Good satire, but poor logic. Linux is a remarkably stable kernal based on the Unix core which is the basis used for OSX. Ubuntu itself can plug-and-play many devices which require installations with commercial operating systems almost as though it were integrated, an antonym of intermittent. Applications which are available are kept in an easily searchable repository and cover the basic needs of any casual user. Slander without a reason only shows the lack of experience you clearly present.
You've obviously never used a Linux desktop operating system. Linux is a remarkably stable kernel, based on the UNIX tradition. (It is not, of course, the basis of OS X; OS X is based on the Mach microkernel, lolz.)
Ubuntu, however, is an operating system. A feature-free, bug-rich operating system built on top of the Linux kernel, with crappy hardware support, buggy substandard software, idealism valued over practicality, insane defaults, and built-in incompatibility with all major apps.
Actually, OSX is a Unix-based operating system. It's officially recognized as a Unix-based operating system and Apple paid with both software development and money to get that qualification. OSX isn't Unix, but it is Unix-based.
Ubuntu, however, is a feature-full, bug-reduced operating system build on top of the Linux kernal with hardware support surpassing commercial operating systems, and an incredible array of amazing applications. Try it out. You haven't in a while.
STABLE? ROFLMAO! I'm using Linux, and this is the third time this month I've had to reinstall it. Why? Because I make the "mistake" of visiting YouTube, which crashes Opera, FireFox, SeaMonkey...it doesn't crash Dillo, but you can't view YT with Dillo.
Linux users think "computing" consists of surfing, e-mail, and basic tasks. Power users need more than that. The only good open-source program is the GIMP.
I'm shopping for a Windows PC, at which point I'll happily ditch this damn Linux box.
Third time this month? Wow, I've had to reinstall once in three years. Why? Because I ask for help, I look for good distributions, and I obviously can view "YT".
I've edited videos for projects, done 3D rendering, programmed, and more on Linux. The experience is only as good as the user and distribution, so which is the weak link here? Don't condemn the kernal, get the answers you need.
Ubuntu 7.04+ runs smoothly and is quite stable. 9/10 times, a problem is the users fault on every platform.
I've tried i think 9.04 or nine something and it crashed a couple of times, i was just comparing it to my windows xp and there is no comparison windows xp is just better, but Ubuntu does has the eye candy.
will ubuntu ever solve the ati driver issue ? At least they should make the installer chose by default some configuration that works, not that makes your screen blank.
Sounds like you either need to get more computing skills under you belt or use windows for the rest of your life. With the exception of Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros, Linux is mostly for performance and advanced computing(mostly). Most people don't like Linux because it requires some skill at a command line or editing config files. To Linux users(again besides Ubuntu, etc.) thats all the glory of it, Having complete control over your entire system. After all, computers aren't cheap.
Ubuntu has the most crashes and the most bugs out of all the the other popular distributions. It is one of the newer distributions. There are plenty of distributions that are way, way ahead of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is only popular because of all the Windows users coming to it because it is easy to use. Its seems like paradise if you came from Windows. It may be ahead of some other "easy to use" distributions, but certainly not by far.
btw I like Ubuntu tho and I run Yellow Dog on my PS3 for old skool gaming with a ps3 controller, but linux can just make doing the simplest things such a pain in the arse!!! (sound like any other OS?) *snicker*
Im not gong to beat around the bush here, linux and windows both have their issues , but I think what makes XP popular, yet problematic, is exactly that. It's insecure because EVERYONE USES IT so of course spyware coders, virus writers are going to aim most of their malware to windows machines because that's what most pc's run. I think what linux boasts in 'security' is also due to to it's open-source nature, but the fact is that most people don't use linux for everyday/office computing
ive just started using Ubuntu and have had no real problems. And the problems i did have were just a Google search away. So i cant run software made for windows very easily, but im not running windows, so i cant expect it to. There is bound to be an app to replace the windows equivalent anyway. some people are scared of change, but i find a new way of doing things quite refreshing.
Just tried Ubuntu and it reminded me of windows 3.11 where you always had to edit config.sys and autoexec.bat. Ubuntu/linux is free and I think someday it will be a superior OS but for the average computer user it should be avoided for now. XP Pro is a good OS until certain third party apps are installed. XP plus opensource apps are great. I tried every thing anyone had to offer to get my dual monitors to work in Ubuntu to no avail so that killed it for me. Good luck to everyone else!
Also following from my other comment, 'WINE' is a shit program when trying to play games.
I couldn't get WoW to work on the desktops graphics, I had to change the config to open-gl which really is the most oldest shittist graphics in the world.
Linux goes back instead of forwards, command typing is so old now.
Non the less, great for web server but shit for personal use.
Vista aint any different, shittiest OS made yet, trying to copy mac but had a EPIC FAILURE.
I've been using linux for over 5 years now, but then I don't blame machinery or software for my lack of ability; instead, I take time to read and learn, and then I find I am capable of doing what I need to do. Whining on youtube that linux is not windows explains exactly why you can not handle linux.
Ubuntu doesn't work for you, friend, because you're a moron.
It's allergic to your kind.

XP is ok.
HayaLaHaya 2 years ago
Ubuntu, bugs? WOW! Security issues? 20 viruses that have all been patched? Soo scary. Ubuntu is very stable

Ubuntu is incredibly buggy and unstable. Much worse than any Window machine I have ever used, including Win95. Take off the brown-colored glasses.

No Offense, all
qasemkhan 3 years ago
True, but Microsoft tries too hard to disguise it's issues, and it definitely tries too hard to be consistent, which is why it isn't.
arvinkebob 3 years ago
Wrong.
Mac and Linux are both excellent systems.
But there are so much Micro$oft PC's, people are n00bs if they want to try something else.
I have Ubuntu 8.10, as the only OS, and it works like a charm.

The only thing I dislike about gentoo is sitting around waiting for things to compile, which is one reason why I prefer Arch. Both are excellent, though.
scumfuccrust 3 years ago
xp is ok, its definitely the best windows. ubuntu is good for beginners or if you have a good computer. gentoo is probably one of the best IF you know what you're doing, its not practical for most people. i'm actually dling arch right now because i heard it was good
schmidtbag 3 years ago
According to arstechnica in today's news, "Wikipedia adopts Ubuntu for its server infrastructure".
Ubuntu just keeps on spreading, despite the tiny cries, IMO, from the mouse holes still running proprietary software infected with the point and click retardation virus.
Keep on enjoying your proprietary anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-trojan, anti-adware, anti-this and anti-that software, and scanning your drives while funding a monopoly.
I'll enjoy freedom and NOT running a black box .
polishedrazor 3 years ago 2

jigglesnap 2 years ago 2
Ubuntu doesn't suck, IMO people who continue to fund proprietary software suck. People who are used to and continue to recommend closed document/media formats and lock-in suck.
Read the GNU Philosophy.
polishedrazor 3 years ago 3
Ubuntu is less professional and is seemingly less compatible than openSuSE. This is only because Ubuntu doesn't come preloaded with as many libraries as SuSE does. It's also a bit easier to install and is much more customizable.
arvinkebob 3 years ago
i'd have to disagree with the customization but i suppose the rest is true. i'm not really sure why your rating is so bad, yo'ure still supporting linux and opensuse is older, as far as i'm aware
schmidtbag 3 years ago 2
My rating isn't necessarily bad. 8.10 is loads better than 8.04 and I can start saying that it is on the road to becoming more pro. I still like to use Ubuntu from time to time. openSuSE just seems a little more "open". I don't really know how to explain it.
arvinkebob 3 years ago
Linux IS NOT better than Windows or in anyway designed to replace any other operating system.
Like any other distribution it is merely a community developed and supported operating system based on the linux kernel.
Hardware is better supported in windows as the majority of users use it thus some not all manufacturer's do not see the point in supporting linux leaving driver support upto the community which in my opinion they are doing well meaning hardware problems are being fixed in new releases
BeigeGenius 3 years ago
This guy is right. I left Windows over a year ago, and while I have had no major Ubuntu Linux problems, I am having a shit-load of small ones. The most recent one involves my advanced desktop settings to all of a sudden stop working, and the system telling me I don't have xgl installed. Yet I do.
I don't like Windows because I feel like I have to run a spysweep and virus check every friggin 10 minutes. But the more I get into Ubuntu, the more it is sucking.
Lich1979 3 years ago
What sucks?
Gaming is vastly unsupported.
Flash was a pain in the ass to get working.
Drivers for printers / scanners were a pain in the ass, and had to be gotten from a french site.
WINE can't run shit as far as .exe's go. (Tried running allen bradley's ladder logic program under WINE... yeah right).
Never is there a straightforward answer to any problem, and the support forums are overrun by 12 year olds who know shit about nothing.
...continued
Lich1979 3 years ago
Linux fans will say, "maybe you need more computing knowledge... blah blah blah." Guess what jack-asses? I have 100 other things to worry about from day to day, most of them involve life away from a computer. I don't have 3 hours to dedicate to every little problem that needs fixing on an OS that should work.
You want Linux to go mainstream and kick windows in the sack.. news flash.. it's going to have to get more user friendly and intuitive to use.
I might buy a mac now. Jesus F-ing Christ
Lich1979 3 years ago
Everyone needs to start somewhere and never listen to zealots they're never right!
BeigeGenius 3 years ago
If you need Ubuntu support and have Ubuntu installed, first try Google and the Ubuntu pages to see if the problem hasn't been encountered by others (It usually has) or try clicking applications - add or remove - Xchat. Set it up and delve into the world of real-time support on the Ubuntu IRC servers. Give it a whirl. Good luck!
crispindry 3 years ago
Or just run a real OS that doesn't need "support" to figure out how to do every little simple thing.
Ubuntu is flaky, useless garbage that works on just enough hardware to piss off 1% of computer users with its persistent crashes, bugs, and refusal to do anything useful. Good thing there's an angry mob of mindless nerd drones who ENJOY wasting their time fixing the same things that break and re-break with every release. Thanks for Ubuntu, Communism!
jigglesnap 2 years ago
Heh...
ScruffyBarker 2 years ago
Hmmm... Let's look it up in a thesaurus:
Main Entry: Ubuntu
Synonyms: flaky, buggy, unreliable, unstable, crapshoot, intermittent, half-assed, half-baked, haywire, jury-rigged, disorganized, kludge, clusterfuck, ...
jigglesnap 2 years ago
Good satire, but poor logic. Linux is a remarkably stable kernal based on the Unix core which is the basis used for OSX. Ubuntu itself can plug-and-play many devices which require installations with commercial operating systems almost as though it were integrated, an antonym of intermittent. Applications which are available are kept in an easily searchable repository and cover the basic needs of any casual user. Slander without a reason only shows the lack of experience you clearly present.
ScruffyBarker 2 years ago
You've obviously never used a Linux desktop operating system. Linux is a remarkably stable kernel, based on the UNIX tradition. (It is not, of course, the basis of OS X; OS X is based on the Mach microkernel, lolz.)
Ubuntu, however, is an operating system. A feature-free, bug-rich operating system built on top of the Linux kernel, with crappy hardware support, buggy substandard software, idealism valued over practicality, insane defaults, and built-in incompatibility with all major apps.
jigglesnap 2 years ago 5
Actually, OSX is a Unix-based operating system. It's officially recognized as a Unix-based operating system and Apple paid with both software development and money to get that qualification. OSX isn't Unix, but it is Unix-based.
Ubuntu, however, is a feature-full, bug-reduced operating system build on top of the Linux kernal with hardware support surpassing commercial operating systems, and an incredible array of amazing applications. Try it out. You haven't in a while.
ScruffyBarker 2 years ago
I've been using Ubuntu as my primary OS for more than two years. It's shit. I'm talking from personal experience.
jigglesnap 2 years ago
STABLE?
I'm shopping for a Windows PC, at which point I'll happily ditch this damn Linux box.
foxnewsliars 2 years ago
Third time this month? Wow, I've had to reinstall once in three years. Why? Because I ask for help, I look for good distributions, and I obviously can view "YT".
I've edited videos for projects, done 3D rendering, programmed, and more on Linux. The experience is only as good as the user and distribution, so which is the weak link here? Don't condemn the kernal, get the answers you need.
Ubuntu 7.04+ runs smoothly and is quite stable. 9/10 times, a problem is the users fault on every platform.
ScruffyBarker 2 years ago
I've tried i think 9.04 or nine something and it crashed a couple of times, i was just comparing it to my windows xp and there is no comparison windows xp is just better, but Ubuntu does has the eye candy.
grandmastgarth 2 years ago
will ubuntu ever solve the ati driver issue ? At least they should make the installer chose by default some configuration that works, not that makes your screen blank.
TheGuardianOfHate 2 years ago
Sounds like you either need to get more computing skills under you belt or use windows for the rest of your life. With the exception of Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros, Linux is mostly for performance and advanced computing(mostly). Most people don't like Linux because it requires some skill at a command line or editing config files. To Linux users(again besides Ubuntu, etc.) thats all the glory of it, Having complete control over your entire system. After all, computers aren't cheap.
andrewslinuxbox 3 years ago
Ubuntu has come a long way and by far is ahead of all the other linux and freebsd desktop distributions.
BeigeGenius 3 years ago
Ubuntu has the most crashes and the most bugs out of all the the other popular distributions. It is one of the newer distributions. There are plenty of distributions that are way, way ahead of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is only popular because of all the Windows users coming to it because it is easy to use. Its seems like paradise if you came from Windows. It may be ahead of some other "easy to use" distributions, but certainly not by far.
andrewslinuxbox 3 years ago
btw I like Ubuntu tho and I run Yellow Dog on my PS3 for old skool gaming with a ps3 controller, but linux can just make doing the simplest things such a pain in the arse!!! (sound like any other OS?) *snicker*
The7thCircuit 3 years ago
Im not gong to beat around the bush here, linux and windows both have their issues , but I think what makes XP popular, yet problematic, is exactly that. It's insecure because EVERYONE USES IT so of course spyware coders, virus writers are going to aim most of their malware to windows machines because that's what most pc's run. I think what linux boasts in 'security' is also due to to it's open-source nature, but the fact is that most people don't use linux for everyday/office computing
The7thCircuit 3 years ago
ive just started using Ubuntu and have had no real problems. And the problems i did have were just a Google search away. So i cant run software made for windows very easily, but im not running windows, so i cant expect it to. There is bound to be an app to replace the windows equivalent anyway. some people are scared of change, but i find a new way of doing things quite refreshing.
MrTard 3 years ago
Just tried Ubuntu and it reminded me of windows 3.11 where you always had to edit config.sys and autoexec.bat. Ubuntu/linux is free and I think someday it will be a superior OS but for the average computer user it should be avoided for now. XP Pro is a good OS until certain third party apps are installed. XP plus opensource apps are great. I tried every thing anyone had to offer to get my dual monitors to work in Ubuntu to no avail so that killed it for me. Good luck to everyone else!
owensaruba 3 years ago
Ubuntu is maturing fast and to be honest if you are looking for a replacement to windows go to your nearest apple computer store!
BeigeGenius 3 years ago
Also following from my other comment, 'WINE' is a shit program when trying to play games.
I couldn't get WoW to work on the desktops graphics, I had to change the config to open-gl which really is the most oldest shittist graphics in the world.
Linux goes back instead of forwards, command typing is so old now.
Non the less, great for web server but shit for personal use.

I've been using linux for over 5 years now, but then I don't blame machinery or software for my lack of ability; instead, I take time to read and learn, and then I find I am capable of doing what I need to do. Whining on youtube that linux is not windows explains exactly why you can not handle linux.
