I grew up in the town where the pool was in this spot; they took out that high dive a few years later after some kid fell off the side and landed on the concrete surface. Memories!
Excellent! This tune has been ringing in my mind for a couple of years. I decided to see if it was posted on YouTube and it is! Metromedia 5 and 11Alive were the two best TV stations in the US at the time. I really appreciate the effort put into writing the tune and filming the images. Is it me or was the 70s in New York a much happier time than today?
TV in the 70;s, 80';s was so much better and independent stations had a identity- now we have crap carbon copies in each market like CW, WB, etc.. Yuch!
@brtcmfn I agree. In fact, I think most New Yorkers watched 5 and 11 more than they watched the Big 3 Networks. 5 had the best movies. They always played the classic films which today have been largely forgotten about except for film history buffs. Though 5 was owned by Kansas City based Metromedia, they allowed autonomy over the New York programming. Now CW, WB are all controlled by execs in California and elsewhere who know little about or care about local New York life.
@DerKosmonaut1972 - Sad but true...back in the day, WOR was my fave indie, mainly for their syndicated game shows (The Joker's Wild, Tic Tac Dough, etc), not to mention NY Mets games, Joe Franklin, and the clasic "Million Dollar Movie". Nowadays, seems like the only station nowadays that hasn't forgotten its roots is WPIX, which continues long-standing holiday traditions like Laurel & Hardy's "March of the Wooden Soldiers" and the Yule Log.
The italian store father and girl(with the world's biggest submarine sandwich)in the middle and end of the first WNEW promo remind me of some of my armenian friends in the armenian community i belong to.
@Zickcermacity I totally agree. In fact, I remember exactly when Murdoch took over the station in 1987. I was annoyed with the call letter change. WNEW made more sense than WNYW. I was most annoyed when the new station replaced the morning cartoons and children's programming for that awful Good Day New York. As far as I'm concerned the only good show Fox produced was The Simpsons. Moreover, WNYW stopped broadcasting The Big Apple Movie.
You can 5, ride the subway, you can 5, star on Broadway, you can 5, glide through the park, light up the dark, be a winner, in Queens it shows, Long Island knows, Brooklyn comes alive, you choose, the Opera or the Blues, for fun the choice is 5!
Watching this promo brought back a lot of memories when Ch. 5 was such a terrific station. I grew up in Queens, NY from 1975-84 and our independent stations (Ch. 5-Metromedia), Ch. 9 (WOR) and Ch. 11 (Independent-not sure of who owned it) were beyond awesome! New York television is not what it used to be :-(
I agree with you 100%. Growing up then was a wonderful time for TV. For a kid it was structured. Friday Nights, creature feature, Saturday afternoon "The Drive in Movie", which was usually a very badly dubbed Kung u flick and on Sundays "Abbott & Costello"
Too bad radio and tv jingles no longer sound this good! With TV networks cramming triple screen splits and program endings you'll never seen (or hear) a bumper that sounds this good. Thanks for sharing this gem!
Takes me back to the good ol' days in the late 70s and early 80s when you put your own life in your hands living or even visiting Manhattan.

Well, jam's still doing the damn thing! We have it big at 103.5 if there's any Los Angeles fans.
