@Medysonball No, but I would really like to at some point in my life. Much of the footage I used was from a woman from the Ukraine. Her name was Elena Filatova. Her father worked for the Ukranin government so she was able to get a special pass into the exclusion zone riding her motorcycle taking pictures and video. She put together a very interesting web site, but I don't know what happened to it. I am fascinated with the site because it's like a giant time capsule.
These men did their duty without question. Stormed the jaws of a hell unleashed by this disaster and did not back down, or run. There is no thank you, no monument, to honor these men. They knew they were going to die, but put duty and safety first. 15 min. increments for each man to contain it, and that was even too much exposure. Since they were on the scene, they had minimum protection to aid them. Pray for them.
4:33-4:37 is my langauge finnish.text means:Abandoned school near chernobyl 115 000 evacuated 30kilometers at the field reactor. 850 000 still lives in contaminated zone.
when your playing a game like fallout you are almost wishing for it to happen because it looks so cool, but then you see this and i start to think, everything (almost) would look like this. and then you're like may something similar like fallout never happen =/
The gas mask is actually effective in filtering the dust, that may contain radioactive particles that inside your lungs would cause your death. Of course it didn't matter anyway as the actual environmental radiation was way above the maximum for a living person to endure. And they knew it.
I honor each and every one of them for their stunning bravery. Glory to the name of these true heroes.
I am from Ukraine ( live from chernobyl average 550 miles ) the people liquidators most of them died in a few days or few years after disaster those who still alive are sick and goverment pay them about 100 -120$ a month for chernobyl liquidation . Gov. are fuckn assholes
@NOAACOW.....THE REASON FOR THE MASK IS NOT BREATH CONTAMINATED AIR.....NOT ONLY RADIATION IS DANGEROUS..EVERY ELEMENT OF LIFE IS CONTAMINATED IN DIFFERENT WAYS...THANKS
Well,in my point of vieuw anno 2011 i know that u shut stay far far far away from blown nuke reactors,i wonder if those poor souls knew the same as i,and i am not a scientist or something just a person who know 0,1% about nucliar energy,i wonder if those poor sould would still do they job if they knew there life would be under threath by a invisable enemy named radiation.
Those man gave there lifes to safe others.
Knowing or not knowing, without them the world would of looked diffent today..
The Biorobots went on the roof and removed extremely radioactive material by hand. They could only work for several minutes at a time, sometimes even just 40 seconds, resulting in severe radiation sickness, cancer, and death. The high doses of radiation literally sucked the life out of them, leaving them with life-long illnesses, lack of energy, and cancer. They gave up their youth and their lives so that countless unknown others could live, they are true heroes in the highest place of honor.
They've resurrected and are now in the hearts and souls of those who are struggling in Japan, Fukushima Daiichi, doing the same and what they do best, saving lives. Respect.
These Liquidators and pilots knew what they were up to, but refusing a direct order during the soviet Union communist regime would bring the death penalty, which would have been easier than years of suffering due to radioactive exposure.
The picture at 1:05 is a monument to the people that finally contained the Chernobyl disaster. The monumnet was made and paid for by the families that lost their loved ones in the disaster - NOT by any government.
i wonder what it was like for them to know that they'd have to do whatever was necessary to stop the radiation from spreading and to keep other reactors from blowing up but at the same time they would die from cancer or something. I kinda hope they didn't know they'd die from the amount of radiation they were exposed to. Ignorance is bliss right?
@noaacow not sure what you mean exactly. what the masks are for in general or why there is such a large deposit of masks at that particular site. for the first, the gas masks were used to prevent the radioactive contamination from entering their lungs, and thus causing them to suffer years of radioactive damage and poisoning.. as for the second, my guess is it was a military staging area, or a dump site for highly radioactive equipment.
@noaacow yeah like @noaacow said they will take in too much radiation. radiation is everywhere but in very little ammounts that r harmless. there was over 40 times the ammount of the normal rate. it was i think they said 2 to 4 times worse than hiroshima. which had a nuclear bomb dropped on them.
I cant stop thinking about this tragic event in my adultlife....and how far we have come about in scientific thought and that well....we pose a danger to ourselves somehow with our own technology.I ask and pray God help us.
Great music choice. The footage of the guys with shovels - wow - it looks like they are wearing "protective" gear from the 1940s; you know they didn't live long. Such a sad and preventable tragedy in human history.
And to TheGmgirl77 - they all lied. . . and they all died.
Stupid what Soviet Union did to itself , and What USA did to Japan. Who payed the bills were those dead now. I ask: And Ipod , Iphone , or Microsoft can pay as a industrial gain , all those lost life cut by the progress?
Men? or more than men?Is there realy a name for any one who charges into the face of death head on?Knowing once you go there No turning back!Christ was the first who paved such a brave road.Jesus"There is no greater love".Just when I belive huamanity lost it's soul some one proves me wrong, may it never stop.
yes to nuclear energy because with all due respect it was their fault for disableing the safty, just to do an experiment. if they did not take the controll rods out and stop them from going back in when the reactor core was over-loading then, no of this would have happened (if they did not want to makes lots more nuclear power faster but in less time). and todays nulear power plants are much safer. but good video.
Respect from Nepal. .........Before starting a nuclear powerplant I think every country should be more than 99.999...% sure and should be ready to fight off the possible problem that can arise while running a powerplant.
My father went there too to liquidate this problem even though we are from Uzbekistan, so a lot of people from all over USSR suffered from this tragedy. His health deteriorated & a lot of people who went with him are no longer alive. This is very-very sad thing.
@DeLorean4 my guess is that's a sack filled with neutron absorbers, although i'd never seen footage of one dropped from that high. usually the helicopters would hover right above it and drop it. the pilots all died i believe. they all received lethal doses flying so close to the reactor and making several trips. i saw in a documentary that the pilots began vomiting and showed signs of severe radiation sickness and they still continued to fly and carry out their orders.
@tlv156 I think at first they threw sand to extinguish the fire that was still raging. They also threw at some point sacks filled with lead to cool down the reactor remains to prevent a second explosion
@DeLorean4 They dropped sand, boron, dolomite, aluminum and lead, high temperature caused the melting of all the ingredients and the creation of mass wich sealed reactor
Umm.. no it didn´t.. They were not able to stop the core from melting away. The bags being thrown in to the core did nothing.
There was actually a great preserve of water right below the reactor core, they knew that if the melted core got to it, europe would not be a great place to live.
They went in under the reactore core and drained all the water out, thus stoping an explosion that could have been catastrophic.
i know that, im living not far away from Chernobyl. There was 4 main rescue teams: 1st evacuation of civilians, 2nd clearing, secure and seal main reactor preventing radiation going outside, 3rd secure seal and monitor temperature reactor from underground, 4th military forces to remove the effects of radiation. Even my family living in the vicinity of the Bialowieza Forest getting injections to reduce the effects of radiation. I was answering to some dude about dropping bags into core
im sorry but chernobyl could have been prevented because the the ppl there scrambled the reactor which causes the reactor to expose itself and the ppl there turned of the safety pumps and then the explosion occurred plus sending lots of raidoactive particles into the atmoshpere.
I was born on April 27, the following morning of the night that is claimed to be the beginning of the accident. So a lot of stuff probably also went down on the 27th. Makes me feel weird.
good old communism ;) , the yanks working on the non radioactive 911 heap of junk are now filing law suits. these guys in Russia know what it means to work for the good of the many. TRUE HEROES

I am intrested in nucliar energy since Japans Fukoshima plant is in big trouble..
And for as far as i know know:
Japan has 4 reactors that are under treath,Japan has has a more dangerous fuel in reactor nr 3...With higher levels of Plutonium
Chernobyl had 1 Uranium reactor.
I wonder how lang Japan can keep the situation stabil (if thats how u can call it) as the world isnt wainting for another Chernobyl..
Nucliar energy shut be history...A better alternative is Thorium..atleast its seems it is

What do you build or say to repay this sacrifice
Bold courage shown by men who died knowing there was absolutely no hope, and only a slow miserable death to look towards after following orders.....

i know that, im living not far away from Chernobyl. I was answering to some dude about dropping bags into core

im sorry but chernobyl could have been prevented because the the ppl there scrambled the reactor which causes the reactor to expose itself and the ppl there turned of the safety pumps and then the explosion occurred plus sending lots of raidoactive particles into the atmoshpere.
computbut 1 year ago
@computbut it wasnt just there fault the reactor was designed badly

I was born on April 27, the following morning of the night that is claimed to be the beginning of the accident. So a lot of stuff probably also went down on the 27th. Makes me feel weird.

Tragic heroes they are.
Tragic heroes pick up the sherds.
Tragic heroes die alone.
Remember them, and remember their fight against a foe that mankind has no control over.
