@RazorEXE Yeah, but we're talking about Bungie, who decided "Quick! Before Microsoft buys us, let's make Marathon free! Because that's awesome!"
Somehow I doubt they'd care if these 343 guys decided to pay tribute (that is to say, avoid having to use original thought for doing something "new") to Halo's origin.
@DrolKeegEht That is true. Wanna know something? If you've played CE: Anniversary, you know how 343 Guilty Spark had the Marathon logo as his "eye"? Guess what wasn't there? ;)

In halo my guy looks like marathon guy and people ask who is your spartan ment to look like, "I say Durandal" they say "WHO THE HELL IS DURANDAL" I say "MY IDEA OF A HERO"
The halo before halo, without this game, bungie would not be the big awesome company that it is now, and if it didn't put bungie on the map, then games like Myth, Oni, and the Halo series would never have existed
@UNSC2010 Actually Marty was even in Bungie at this time. The Marathon soundtrack was done by Alex Seropian and the themes for Marathon 2 : Durandal and Marathon Infinity were done by a group known as Power of Seven.
@xerfes Correct me if I'm wrong but I was reading on marathon.bungie.org/story/ that he did the soundtrack. You should just copy the site to see if I'm right or not they have a ton of info on this game series.
@TheWorldBroadcast No, I think you probably have the correct info. Just made me glad to see the comment and I wanted to know how to obtain this kind of facts :)
@10samm10 GET... OUT... NOW! (But in all honesty, you have to appreciate two kinds of shooters to enjoy them equally, and in that sense, Marathon just isn't your game. I respect that).
@Narudude360 I enjoyed Marathon 2's (Marathon 1 was a piece of crap) story, setting, atmosphere and certain gameplay features more than Doom. But with all of its cramped and claustrophobic levels, unusual pacing, floaty physics and tasteless texture design it was just not as fun as Doom's faced paced gameplay and complex but approachable level design.
@TheMariofan1000 All I know is that around the end of last year, everyone was saying that they lost the rights, I'm not sure if this is true or not, but it would explain why the Marathon symbol isn't in Reach that much.
@HYPERSILVER7 yeah, it's True. but the the thing is, marathon was unknown to windows users and to bring it back now would be unwise since people wont know wtf marathon is. lol
@HYPERSILVER7 yes, i do. but i do love marathon. :) its an unknown, but important part of Video game history. i love old PC games, like duke nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, etc. :D
Marathon is one of the best games, if not the best, that I've ever played. It is a true example of art. The plot is amazing, with the absolute best immersion I've known, the gameplay is relatively simple yet fun, and there are so many things that this is uncredited for bringing into the gaming industry.
Halo is better than Marathon in the way of imagination and storyline and enemies. I love the idea of multiple enemies, Covenant, Flood, Forerunners etc. The Graphics are fantastic. I think the idea of Xbox exclusive was annoying but yeah. Marathon well, I respect that you guys love marathon, But, I have to say Halo is really what made Bungie Famous
@SuperSupremeGamer Just pointing out that nearly every concept in Halo, everything that sounds cool, is from Marathon, PiD, Myth, or ONI, and mostly Marathon.
Mjolnir Mk IV armor, Mythic, Legendary, and Heroic, Seige of Madrigal, Hunters, and damn near everything else.
@SuperSupremeGamer Marathon did have multiple enemies, the Pfhor, the Spht for example. I think the reason why Halo made bungie really famous and Marathon not, was due to the time when they emerged. Marathon 1 came out in 94' exclusive to mac, Marathon 2 and infinity 95' on mac and windows. Back then I remember that the next gen gaming scene and its technology was still young. I didn't know any1 else who had a mac or PC at the time but now everyone has a console and/or PC so games get seen now
@SuperSupremeGamer Marathon infinity was one weird game it doesnt actually follow any cannon the game ends with marathon durandal but infinity basically stuck two fingers up at gamers and said yeah heres the alternate real ending and to be honest is the better ending out of the two just weird with all this shift in alternate realities where durandal takes you to do his work or tycho the pfhor captured AI nabbed you at the end of marathon 1 and gets you to fuck up durandal for him
I think they should make like a game that has Halo and Marathon series coming together in one game. Halo has awesome music and gameplay, so does marathon. They have put Marathon clues and hints throughout the halo games. I've been a hardcore Halo fan for ages and I need to know if Marathon is just as good.
This game trilogy deserves another try at life. trilogyrelease dot bungie dot org. Go and get it for free. Mac or Windows. Marathon was and still is the king of incredible storytelling and powerful multiplayer. I've yet to see a game with quite the same level of depth and quality.
@ub3r2008 collectors value? why do people think downloading a game is great and cds are lame? cds give collectors value and ensure youll have that game for a long time. steam could shut down, the data could be lost, etc is why downloading games from steam isnt a great idea. steam is going down the tubes anyways because of the shitty drm thing. when you buy a game on cd, you gotta run it by them first.
@keozeo If Steam ever goes down (it won't because Valve has so much money) Gabe Newell has specifically said that they would release a patch for all steam games that doesn't require the client. Steam isnt' adding any other DRM besides account-based activation, it's the developers of whatever game that adds extra stuff like the horrible GFWL and/or SecuROM. Besides, Steam has so many benefits, sales, etc. I personally don't see anything wrong with Steam and (continued)
@ub3r2008 besides, when did I say cds are lame and downloading games > physical copies? I prefer physical books over ebooks, physical music over mp3s, all that stuff. CDs break, wear, and stuff. They're not immortal. Hell, a few dozen years later and maybe CDs will be as outdated and unused as floppies are now.
As for AlephOne, the engine under the GPL and so Bungie themselves can't sell them. They've also made the Marathon game files free so I don't see why you want to buy the Marathon trilogy.
@keozeo You mean the original 1994-1997 CDs that probably won't be compatible with modern Windows/Mac OS? They're of no value to me if I can't use them and of no value to most people because the trilogy is free. But you can do whatever you want to. :P
@ub3r2008 i dont think your getting it. im saying make a special edition of the game, release it on cd, and that way people can own marathon with better graphics as well as a nice collectors item.
@keozeo Halo and Monkey Island are still copyrighted but Marathon's source code has been released. Your fanciful "collector's value" is masturbatory and pointless. Spending money on a free game does not make you better than others. These games are over 15 years old.
HD resolutions are available for spazeroids, and M2: Durandal is already on XBL. If people want to play Marathon, they go to Aleph One. FULL STOP PERIOD
This game is without a doubt one of the greatest games ever. Excellent plot, awesome soundtrack, kickass gameplay... I mean, who doesn't love diving into a pile of Pfhor with a couple of shotguns?
Sometimes the levels are confusing, and shooting seems like a seizure waiting to happen, but it's a great game. Anyone have the Xbox version want to play online?
@PrototypeAndroid - if you can look past the outdated graphics, the level design is awesome and the story is terrific, not to mention the gameplay is solid. If you are bored and want an involving FPS, it's a really good game to have. Though it doesn't seem quite as magical if you didn't play it as a youngling ;)
@zevex747 I recently played through the first one and have been playing the second one on the 360, and it's still a magical experience. It has made me develop a slight marathon obsession.
@Jarbizu800 - sweet. You played THROUGH it, as in beat it? Nice work, every installment is pretty tough. I have a question for you: does the storytelling play a large part in it being "magical" for you? I think Durandal is a pretty amazing character. Anyway, it's good news that someone can still get obsessed with Marathon in this day and age. Once you finish the original Trilogy, check out some other scenarios:
@zevex747 I was interested in the atmosphere and the general retro shooter gameplay, but then after being hooked on the story I became absolutely sucked in by Durandal and where he took the story. I can't help myself, I love that awesome bastard/hero/I don't know what the hell to call him.
@KampferXeon I didn't like the new graphics, but I do enjoy playing on the Xbox. Also, I see you're on the Marathon Wiki. Pretty cool.
If Halo 1 came on Xbox with achievements, I'd buy it even though I already have it. Just because the achievements would give me something to shoot for and another reason to play it over again (though I'd still play it over again anyway, if I got into the mood).
marathon infinity is not marathon 3. infinity is basically the same as durandal. it uses the same engine, graphics, and gameplay (the original marathon played differently than the aleph one release, which uses durandal's engine). true, the levels are different and the story is rich...and confusing...but I am still waiting for a real marathon 3
Unless ODST involves the Rookie traveling through time, space, dreams, and dimensions, killing people that he worked so hard to save in a desperate attempt to kill a freaking god of chaos in order to save the universe, then no, they're not too similar.
@KampferXeon No, I don't mean gameplay or story wise. I meant that as Halo 3: ODST used the exact same engine as Halo 3 did, albeit polished slightly, with a few new weapons and a totally different story, Marathon Infinity did the same to Durandal.
As in, Infinity has the same engine as Durandal, and is not quite a sequel, but is a different story, later on, mostly the same gameplay but with a weapon or two added in.
@PanzerX7 Marathon Infinity was essentially M2 with new scenery, new multi-branch storyline that wrapped up the inconsistencies of M2, a new weapon, new netmaps and bugfixes to the engine.
@roboguy75 Negative, Marathon 3 would imply that it takes place after 2. It kind of doesn't, because, you know, the Pfhor are extinct for tens of thousands of years according to the epilogue of Durandal.
@roboguy75 It's a "This is too fucking complicated to figure out when, so I'm not going to worry about it."
Basically, the end of Marathon: Durandal, what you've been fighting so hard for, what you released the eleventh clan of the S'pht, killed Durandal, blew up a bunch of juggernauts, saved all of the humans for-
@TsucasaElkGSI No. It was made in the days when games production was still creative in a major, personal way, and not conveyor belt products to satisfy a market hungry for generic shooters with obligatory flash graphics.
This game was awesome, I bought it for my 360 , was actually quite a lengthy game, considering games of todays standads ... AKA .. Beating Fable 3 in 2 days.
I've been playing Marathon Rubicon lately. Pretty awesome game.
Durandal will always be my favorite though.

@zevex747 I was interested in the atmosphere and the general retro shooter gameplay, but then after being hooked on the story I became absolutely sucked in by Durandal and where he took the story. I can't help myself, I love that awesome bastard/hero/I don't know what the hell to call him.

@Jarbizu800 God-like anti-hero. :)

RUNNIN' AND GUNNIN' that is what this song makes me think of!
Tarik360 1 year ago
Halo and Marathon are very similar parallel universes, but not the same universe.
Jarbizu800 1 year ago
Just so you know, they actually have a Xbox Live Arcade version to this. I have it on Xbox Live Arcade.
gawayno 1 year ago
@gawayno And you could download all three for FREE on your computer. Just sayin.
I downloaded it too way before I found out it was free.
Play the first one first, then play the second on Xbox for achievements. It helps you get the story much more.
That is, unless you used to play Marathon back in the day. Then you'd already know.
Jarbizu800 1 year ago
@Jarbizu800 You know the funny part, I downloaded the freeware as well. xD
gawayno 1 year ago
@Jarbizu800 I got it on Xbox years after I got it for free. I've played this game pfhorever, but I enjoy the Xbox version more.
KampferXeon 1 year ago
@KampferXeon I didn't like the new graphics, but I do enjoy playing on the Xbox. Also, I see you're on the Marathon Wiki. Pretty cool.
If Halo 1 came on Xbox with achievements, I'd buy it even though I already have it. Just because the achievements would give me something to shoot for and another reason to play it over again (though I'd still play it over again anyway, if I got into the mood).

You'd have to be rampant to dislike this
mushroomjay 1 year ago
@mushroomjay Not rampant... You'd have to be getting your mind compiled by the S'pht!

before the overrated Gaylo
fresca9990211 1 year ago
@fresca9990211 I will not deny that Halo is overrated, but it is still a good game (you're not tough for disliking Halo).
Now, I'd like to point out that Marathon is and always will be my favorite anything, however, Halo is still fun.
I seem to be the only hardcore Marathon-lover who can say that.
KampferXeon 1 year ago
just to let people know
halo and marathon are not sequels and prequels
they are a separate universe so dont go around saying "halo is before marathon"

This is my CHILDHOOD game!! I love this game soooo much!!

marathon infinity is not marathon 3. infinity is basically the same as durandal. it uses the same engine, graphics, and gameplay (the original marathon played differently than the aleph one release, which uses durandal's engine). true, the levels are different and the story is rich...and confusing...but I am still waiting for a real marathon 3
marathon <3
PanzerX7 1 year ago
@PanzerX7 So... you could say Infinity is kinda like Halo 3: ODST, then eh?
Jarbizu800 1 year ago
@Jarbizu800 No.
Unless ODST involves the Rookie traveling through time, space, dreams, and dimensions, killing people that he worked so hard to save in a desperate attempt to kill a freaking god of chaos in order to save the universe, then no, they're not too similar.
KampferXeon 1 year ago
@KampferXeon No, I don't mean gameplay or story wise. I meant that as Halo 3: ODST used the exact same engine as Halo 3 did, albeit polished slightly, with a few new weapons and a totally different story, Marathon Infinity did the same to Durandal.
As in, Infinity has the same engine as Durandal, and is not quite a sequel, but is a different story, later on, mostly the same gameplay but with a weapon or two added in.
Jarbizu800 1 year ago
@Jarbizu800 Also, the Rookie would have to be becoming self aware, like a computer.
KampferXeon 1 year ago
@PanzerX7 Marathon Infinity was essentially M2 with new scenery, new multi-branch storyline that wrapped up the inconsistencies of M2, a new weapon, new netmaps and bugfixes to the engine.

I've never played marathon, I should though, which one should I play, tell me!!!
roboguy75 1 year ago
@roboguy75 play them in order.
Marathon
Marathon 2: Durandal (in my opinion the best FPS ever written)
Marathon: Infinity
Sablestone 1 year ago
@Sablestone I doubt I can find marathon 1 and 3, but don't they have durandal on XBLA?
roboguy75 1 year ago
@roboguy75 They do, but if you google Marathon Aleph one you can get the open source release of all three.
Sablestone 1 year ago
@roboguy75 MARATHON 3 DOES NOT EXIST
KampferXeon 1 year ago
@KampferXeon uh, isn't marathon infinity marathon 3?
roboguy75 1 year ago
@roboguy75 Negative, Marathon 3 would imply that it takes place after 2. It kind of doesn't, because, you know, the Pfhor are extinct for tens of thousands of years according to the epilogue of Durandal.
KampferXeon 1 year ago
@KampferXeon so, what is marathon infinity then? a prequel?
roboguy75 1 year ago
@roboguy75 It's a "This is too fucking complicated to figure out when, so I'm not going to worry about it."
Basically, the end of Marathon: Durandal, what you've been fighting so hard for, what you released the eleventh clan of the S'pht, killed Durandal, blew up a bunch of juggernauts, saved all of the humans for-
never happened.
KampferXeon 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
so, I guess this was the halo of the 90s
roboguy75 1 year ago
Is it weird that I still like Marathon 2's theme better than most other theme songs?
TsucasaElkGSI 1 year ago 2
@TsucasaElkGSI No. It was made in the days when games production was still creative in a major, personal way, and not conveyor belt products to satisfy a market hungry for generic shooters with obligatory flash graphics.

This game was awesome, I bought it for my 360 , was actually quite a lengthy game, considering games of todays standads ... AKA .. Beating Fable 3 in 2 days.
