  • fats' personality was what made him a hustler, not his game.

  • I love this shit...if were a pool hustler I'd want to be known as Pete Jones

  • Cornbread Red was driving to Johnson City Il when a truck in front of him turned over. Red checked to see if the guy was alright then took his wallet with $300 in it! Now that's a hustler for you! Story confirmed by Don Diephaus Cincinnati fellow hustler in his day!

  • @thethecommander thats not a hustler, thats a thief...devilistic shit that was

  • I live two blocks from Linemen's, or Jansco's as it was called.

It's weird to see something based in JC from so long ago, especially since it looks pretty much the same.

  • 2:04 "Ain't Nixon hustlin'. Ain't he out shakin' hands 24 hours a day tryin' to be the President of the United States."

  • i live in johnston city illnoise it is so boring!!!

  • I live in Johnston City I live only like 5 blocks from that bar its now called linemens lounge

  • I was a friend of the wonderful man. met him in the early 90s when we both lived in Nashville Tn. i am still friends with his widow. Boy stories he could tell...lol..

  • I read an article of "legends of the road" and the legendary pro they were interviewing said he thinks that Minnesota fats was the best in the country at one pocket during the mid 40's. plus I saw a 1986 video of fats and he could roll 15 balls down the table and make them all in a row while they were moving. Then bank the last one 4 rails. I'm above average and I can't do that. So to say that he was ok is a bit much.

  • Truth be known Fats was a showman and a hustler. ....Danny Mcgoorty said in his book that at any one time there were 10 people that would swim a river of shit to play fats for money.

  • Yes he was but he was the best. Did u know he never ever smoked or drank. all his money went on women and gambling.

  • And eat! He must have spent a fortune on food. My god he could eat! That is a very well known fact. He didn't get that knick name for being skinny and not eating.

  • My family owned a bAR, now called linemans lounge, in JC from 1917, to the 80's and all the great pool players used to come there and practise. there is a picture of my dad when he was 3 or 4 sitting on minnesota fats lap.

  • Wow that picture is priceless. I been shooting pool all my life and as a kid I remember Fats on TV, I remember watching him for the first time and thinking I never knew you could make pool balls do all that. It inspired me to become a better player. I was born and raised in The Bronx NY and played many pool halls back in the late 70's to late 80's. Best times of my life. Still play just not as often. I believe that first game I seen was Fats and Tony Masconi or Marconi<? Tony was also great

  • I actually live there.

  • You can actaully smell the money and the action watching this. Awsome piece of billiard history here.Thx alot for posting this.

  • I remember watching Minnesota Fats and Willie on TV, when I was a kid. Great video. Thanks

  • The Fast Eddie Felson fictional character was modeled after Ronnie Allen by Walter Tevis, who wrote The Hustler.

  • @BigGuz2 (Part 2.) That is the experience where he formed the characters and story for his book The Hustler which was published in 1959 by Harper and Row. The book became a movie in 1961. Ronnie Allen was born in Oklahoma in 1939 and won his first tournament at Cochrans in San Francisco in 1961.

  • @BigGuz2 (Part 1.) No way. Walter Tevis the author of The Hustler was born in San Francisco in 1928 and moved to Madison County Kentucky at age 11 in 1939. He entered the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY in 1945 where he earned a B.A. and M.A. in English and literature. While in college he worked at a pool hall.

  • I was at SIU in the 60's not far from Johnston City. I went to the tournament in 1968. The Derby City Classic is similar but it is huge compared to those days. I'm leaving for Louiville tomorrow morning!

  • Great old vintage stuff.

  • Pardon my question cuz it may sound naive . .I m from Mexico and I play pool and carambola ( billiards ) and Ive heard stories about Min Fats came to Mexico and played some guys around. Well may be true . . but Do Fast Eddie really existed or did they just make him up for the movie ?

  • Fast Eddie Felson was a fictional character.

  • So was (the original) Minnesota Fats. He was

a character in a book many years ago.

    Rudolph Wanderone borrowed the name,

& I hear he was New York Fats before that. : )

  • Haha. I live there.

    It sucks here. :P

  • Amen

  • Awesome stuff mate!

  • Watch the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship LIVE - October 14-20, 2007 @ BilliardClub,net. Stay tuned for more details.

  • Thanks for sharing this great historical video of American pool, Colin!

  • You're welcome JAM :-)

  • Fatts was ok, but the truth is he was more of a personality than he was a pool player. He told stories of how he played for kings and queens around the world and none of it was true. He could play, but not on a world class level. When he finally badgered a retired Mosconi enough to get a match, willie beat him like a child at Fatts' own games of 9 and 8 ball. Great pesonality, above average only pool player.

  • true dat. everybody was better, but nobody ever heard of mosconi or ralph greenleaf, and fats' name is on everything.

  • That's called marketing. Mosconi was one

of the best world class players of all time.

If I'm not mistaken, he still holds the world

record for the highest number of balls ran

in a straight pool match; 500 & something.

If you've ever played straight pool, you can

imagine how tough that would be.

  • Hey I Live There Yeah J.C. Indians

  • Minnesota Fats, pools greatest gift!

  • Those were the golden years when pool was displayed in all its glory! Great video!

  • That was awesome, Colin. Thanks!

  • long live fats! This is great shiat!

  • i don't know where this came from, but it's damn good... more, more!

  • my grandma has met Rudolph Wanderone in a bar. Thank you so much for this upload. I have so much respect for the guy who uploaded it.

  • Glad you guys enjoyed the vid. It's a great flashback to a time and place many of us wish we could visit.

  • fatz man he was a legend

  • Sorry, just great P.R. & exposure. I saw

Willie Mosconi beat him (Fats) soundly a

number of times in the 1970s & 80s. Fats

had a great imagination on the pool table &

    even better verbally. : )

  • yeah mosconi ran 506 balls. and he was always better.

  • @850kell531 526, but yeah...

  • so sweet
