  • "What is a ninja"? CORRECT! The third guys wins common sense because a ninja is a motorcycle. A "ninja" is a "shinobi".

  • i think it really doen't matter reather the sword was curved or strait. the point being that we all know Shinobi were highly skilled with a blade.

  • Am I the only person who raised an eyebrow when he said they may still exist.

  • The ninja (Shinobi) wernt the "anti samurai" pop culture claims. There is no clear cut distinction between the Samurai and Shinobi

  • ahh ninja's where assasin's most of them would infiltrate like a soldier or peasant and kill the general or another important person.

  • ninjaken...straight shirt sword?

chinese wooden jian on the wall?

    korean flag on the wall?

the sheath of the sword...sageo instead of saya?

    jep...typical hollywood documentary

  • @hakkuhbijler Why does background have to be "japaneseish" in order to talk about ninja?

    u are being to picky

  • I found this entertaining until he brought out that straight bullshit sword.

  • I am sorry but this is all wrong.

  • 3:39 Pause.Nice face.

  • sageo is the chord on the saya and saya is the scabard nooooob!!!!!!!!!

  • from what I learned ninjas didn't actually wear black, instead they wore dark blue. Black clothing would cause a silhouette in the dark of night whereas dark blue allowed them to blend in with shadows. The perception of them wearing pitch black clothing actually derives from plays where ninjas would be dressed in all black and jump out in a scene of assassination unexpectedly and shock the crowd.

  • Ninja is a kind of assassin.

  • the ninjas convinced me they don't exist

  • When i hear the word "Ninja" I instantly think of Naruto

  • @123armyoftwo When I think of fighting, I think of Dragonball Z.

  • @RelVleDy by the time theyve finished powering up in DBZ the fights in Darker Than Black are already over

  • The sheath is called saya - sageo is just the coil of it.

  • AWESOME

  • wow who hasnt heard of a ninja?!

  • OMG its technomage from babylon 5 :D

  • ....is he seriously saying Ninja didn't use Katana or tachi?

  • there is no evidens of any specific "ninja sword" with straight blade! they simply used a wakizashi with the usual curved blade. a curved blade is very practical when carried on the back because it's much easier to draw than a straight one plus the curve makes it cut better.

  • @Isakkrogh also the scabbard is called the saya.. lol, the chord is the sageo.. this show is weaksauce lol

  • @Isakkrogh Exactly.. A Ninjato would be any sword a ninja had-usually a wakizashi in a katana's saya for a quick draw.

  • @Isakkrogh Double wrong mate. The Sword had to be straight, because a Wakizashi can't fit in a Katana Sheath. If they used any type of short sword, it had to have a straight blade to fit into a longer sheath. Also, the Sheath was worn on the side of the midriff in reverse. They used their off-hand to shift the handle over the shoulder and with their strong-hand they draw the sword over the top of the opponents head.

  • @Isakkrogh You should try to draw a katana from your back and see how well that works out. A standard katana is 41 inches overall and is a two handed weapon.

  • @Lily24711 even a straight sword is pretty effective to drawing from a height and on the same side as ur weapon hand (right side right hand ) but the curve make even slightly draws impossible

  • @Isakkrogh carrying a sword on the back is as much myth as the ninjato it may have been done only when climbing most of the time they probably didnt carry many weapons at all on gather more information dressed as a begger listening to retarted overly talkative soldeirs thant sneaking into fortresses

  • @Isakkrogh I've heard a few theories about the straight ninja sword. One is that it was simply a straight bush knife, but probably would have been way shorter than a sword. The other is that is wasn't a sword at all, but merely a short staff with a square guard somewhere in the middle, to be used as a makeshift step ladder

  • @Isakkrogh how could they have a wakazashi with a curve blade, thats the only design they come in. Ether the wakazashi or another theory is theyd take the grip of a katana and put it on a wakazashi

  • @Isakkrogh i've heard that too. most likely they used what was ever at hand and because of their occupation their swords had to be moded.

  • haha when they are figthing ninjutsu at first the trainer dont even touches hes leg, hes landing on his back on purpouse ^^

  • Men of Iga Men of Koga. Not Ninja.

  • Since when is the "sageo" the scabbard! Is not called a "saya"? And the cord called the "sageo"? Crap TV if you ask me.

  • If there is a single naruto fan here, I'll kill him

  • nice to know that wikepedia is the main source of info for documentaries like this!

  • @ickyguy001 I don't see where the translation comes in, the word Ninja is allegedly Japanese. And the ord Shinobi means Shadow warrior is English so it is better suited. I am glad that you did not troll though.

  • @ickyguy001 Black doesn't actually make sense because there is no natural black without the total absence of light, so they didn't use it.

  • 7:33,"there's no such thing as surprise if you are a ninja". absolutely wrong. Surprise is what Ninja is all about :D

  • @iamnobodyism i think he meant theres no such thing as being suprised to a ninja only to his enemies

  • I hate vids like this. Who allowed this man to be filmed and with so many errors as well???

  • this is stupid. the Nin (忍) has nothing to do with heart n blood. it mean endurance. the radicals comprising it are 刃 (knife edge or blade) and 心 (heart). Hence meaning having to endure a knife edge sitting on the heart.

  • This thing has somany errors in terms of names

  • ummm.... Ninjustsu... = Nin(stealth) + Jutsu(Art)

Taijutsu would be more of the fighting art.

  • @pinoyhellahoy actually Nin is actually nothing to do with stealth. it means endurance.

  • @iamnobodyism the character 忍 is shared in both words I can see where you are coming from.

  • the sageo??? the sageo is the wrapping cord for the scabbard NOT the scabbard itself... who is the historical adviser for these shows... Really...

  • Special forces?

    In theory, yes.

    - Get impossible missions done at all cost.

Sounds pretty much like commandos to me.

  • @kingtwilliam

No, they walked around with straw hats and long robes. :D

  • japan has the coolest culture, all the eurpeans had were pussy hair cuts and lined up with guns to die in the civil war. but japanese worriors went hand to hand!! shhweet

  • You know what is the best part of all these comments, Ninja were not actually called Ninja in ancient Japan, they were called Shinobi.

  • @1169Timothy There are lots of things that are funny about the comments in this thread. If nothing else the funniest part is that 'ninja' (or shinobi, or whatever) were more like james bond than black-clad assassins. You're as likely to find them dressed as gardeners and carpenters as you were to be dressed in black jumpsuits leaping from building to building (both is true)

  • @Neopopulas Well how can we tell??? I mean if we can see him... then he is definitely not a ninja.

  • @Neopopulas unless, of course, they were disguised as theatre stage hands... which is what the black outfit is.

  • @Neopopulas Reminds me of some action movies with ninjas wearing headbands saying "NINJA"

  • @1169Timothy "Ninja" is a hollywood term. But what could actually first be called a ninja originated in Syria.

  • @SpadaccinoLuciano You are talking about the Hashashin arnt you.

  • @1169Timothy Very good, yes I am.

  • @SpadaccinoLuciano I thank you, I am not fool where it comes to ancient warfare.

  • @1169Timothy I can see that. It's good to know what to know.

  • @1169Timothy exactally but now we call them ninjas because sega made a game series called shinobi but yea they are caed shinobi

  • @armymenproductions2 what do you mean?

  • @1169Timothy and the best part is theri day time jobs was to be pro samurai.

  • @1169Timothy and nobels

  • @kaindrg Depends who you talk to but yes. There were such legendary Shinobi like Hattori Hanzo,Who was a Dymio of the Hatori clan and had influence in the court of the Ashikaga Shogun. But yet, every show I have watch so far has yet to acknowledge this truth, instead they claim that ninja were peasants. Such a statement is as stupid as saying that a knight can't get up if knocked over.

  • @1169Timothy So a certain computer game got it right.

  • @shaider1982 I suppose. All I know is that during the Sengoku Jidai period in anchient Japan "Ninja" were not called ninja they were called Shinobi which means shadow warrior, or something along those lines.

  • @1169Timothy true that.

  • ninja were a class of samurai

  • Is it actually possible to get any empical evidence about what and who 'ninja' were? History is messy enough without added concealment

  • "The ninja did exist, and maybe they still do". HAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... I saw that Chuck Norris movie too!

  • Actually, "Ninjas" as what we think of them DIDNT exist. They were Assassains, just like everywhere else in the world, they just happen to be from Japan, so Hollywood glorified them.

  • 7:25 is epic LOL

  • scabard is called saia, the sageo was a "safety cord" attached to the saia

  • I doubt a real ninja would go around wearing black it would make much more sense if they went around wearing normal clothing with hidden blades to kill with...

  • Katana or any similar weapon, is no match for the sabre

  • @TheKravojed depends who uses it

  • i regret watching thegn thrand before watching this. i can't get over the historical inaccuracies and the shotty weapons.

  • ninjas are still in action have you seen kill bill

  • you would not be in a black suite in the day every one will see you

  • this looks fake

  • Ninja clans were a priviliged class other than peasants ninja not equals angry peasants

  • i thought that japanese scabards were callled saya. or was that jsut for katana?

and ninjutsu means the art of stealth

and the draw that is used i iajutsu isnt like that. they would turn the scabardso tthe blade faced down and the n draw out and perform an uppercut

  • @Shazzashazbot no ninjutsu means patience and perseverance. of this im completely sure. i trained in the art and the teacher stressed that was the actual meaning.

  • @Kylestruth7 oh really? what ive heard i that it meant stealth, but ur the expert i guess :L

  • 3:19 Mark? i thought it was colin farrell

  • If they truly are a legend you wouldn't know all these weapons and how they fight. I think he got them wrong, Ninja were merely for intelligence collecting purpose rallied by royal armies of Japan, and they don't really fight a lot.

  • 7:15 thats wrong. the Scabbard is NOT the Sageo. the Scabbard is called Saya. the Sageo is that cord the white arrow is pointing to.

  • What are those gloves called?

  • they used a martial art called ninjitsu (ninja-Itsu)

  • @Xfrond no it's NOT ninja-itsu. Ninjas did NOT walk into 21st Century New York Sushi bars. its just called Ninjutsu (nin-jutsu)

  • i think Ninjas did more spying than assassinations. A japanese castle of highly trained samurai seems rather hard to send one - three men in to kill one man...

  • The ninjas used katana , wakizashi and tachi, actually. Just not very high quality ones.

And did I see nunchaku on the table?!

  • @TheStrawberryLolicon Armor wasn't always worn, especially when the ninja were posing as a monk or a farmer.

  • Wow what a load of rubbish!!!xD I think Naruto is a bit more accurate then this show!!

  • Ninjas are like secret agents nowadays in terms of training, equipments, and means of existence.

  • Pretty funny, but man I'm sick of the whole ninja-black-pyjamas-thing...if you're going to assassinate someone and wear that, you might as well wear a huge neon sign that says "I'm a ninja!"

  • @Jaahaah i think the edge is facing the neck not the hand maybe.

  • @grishtak

diemon dave would see right through this guy....

  • as ninja diemon dave says "dont go ninjin on nobody that doesnt needs ninjin'

  • 2:24 nice corpsepaint

  • Ninja wear whatever they've got. These are poor people of low social class, they obviously don't have a standardized outfit, on operation they would wear whatever is appropriate, for example dark cloth at night.

  • Ninja didn't actually wear black, it was dark blue or green and sometimes crimson.

  • @beardiebuddy please get you facts straight. Most of the time the wore the same cloths as any other Japanese people.

  • This is so wroooooong - I just shiver!! So many errors I don't even know where to begin. And I have studie Bujinkan, "ninjutsu" and related history for almost 20 years. It is not hard to at least get the basic facts straight! For example all historical "ninjas" (the word wasn't used) that we know of were of samurai class (ex Hatori Hanzo) and most of the missions we know about was guerilla warfare and infiltration fortifications, put them on fire and open the gates to the army outside.

  • @beardiebuddy thought dark grey could be an option too. I wonder what a ninja would wear to hide in a carnaval

  • @beardiebuddy how do u know dide u live in 500BC???????

  • @beardiebuddy dont forget, dark brown

  • @beardiebuddy any colour that worked

  • A sageo (下緒 or 下げ緒?) is a hanging cord made of silk, cotton or leather that is passed through the hole in the kurigata (栗形) of a Japanese sword's saya.

Saya (鞘) is the Japanese term for a scabbard

    - quoted from wikipedia

There is no historical record of straight swords being widely used and the black pyjamas comes from how ninjas were represented in kabuki theater, there would be no reason for someone working in secret to have a standardized uniform.

  • I like how the guest performers in this series are always looking pissed off or annoyed.

  • @Jaahaah In field operations they would have worn whatever was necessary, however they may have worn black during raids and attacks, incidentally they did wear armor underneath their clothes, in one of Stephen K Hayes books he shows an example of ninja armor.

  • he said for most operation not"everyday" they most likely only wore those when they were purforming a operation but when they were not doing a operation they would of probably worn normal clothing to aviod suspition

  • The idea of ninjas wearing nothing but black comes from stage performace. As most of you know when watching a stage performace if items need to be moved around men in black will come on and move the stuff around. This meant the audiance generally ignored them and some bright spark thought it would be a good idea to have for a performace the ninjas to come on like this thus having the audiance ignore them. Generally the real ninja would of dressed like the peasant class as they would be ignored

  • @Jaahaah true, true

  • @Jaahaah actualy if you look into it more there was a period where ninjas did wear black masks to sometimes cover their identity.

  • @TheStrawberryLolicon also he never said absolutely no armor, he said the black suit would fit most missions.

  • @TheStrawberryLolicon Really? Were you a ninja? Most of their history was hear say and rumors.

  • @HouseofAtreus01

    fuckIing A RIGHT

  • @HouseofAtreus01

    Also Samurai were Ninjas

It´s not so easy to define a ninja

This show is a hoax though

There was no martial art in Japan any time BC

Also the modern Day "Nijutsu" is just a variant of Jiujutsu.

under the chairmanship of the bujinkan.

....Funny for a assasin to wear clothing and using waepons that would clearly identify you as an assasin. So screw the black masks and "ninja" swords

  • @Nesembria Samurai were not shinobi... Period. As far as I know there were no specialised arts the way we know them; it was all catagorized under bushido. And before that under Taijutsu. Judo, Juijutsu, and Karate are all Taijutsu. Ninjutsu is a mixture of all of those arts that is focused on escape, evation, and defensive techniques. I'm not sure when the Bujinkan came into the picture. The uniforms were actually rarely black. Shinobi would frequently wear blues and reds to blend in.

  • @HouseofAtreus01

or mercenaries who dressed up as peasents to fool the arrogant samurai, who drew from peasant farming tools.

  • @HouseofAtreus01

Really? Hattori Hanzo was both a Ninja and Samurai...

  • @HouseofAtreus01

This is in fact not true. Most ninjas were actually samurai trained in ninjutsu. The legend of the peasant freedom fighter is indeed that. A legend.

  • @Arkanai They were not samurai. This has been family business and they were organised in clans and families, like the mafia (of course not every nija was a relative to the head of the clan). and they were hired for black business by the noblemen who were too honourable for getting their hands dirty.

the pheasant fought in the ikko ikki

  • @derpatrizier The Ikko Ikki were monks, not peasants.

While some Ninja were organized families, ninja just means fighting dirty and special operations. Peasants, samurai, monks could all be ninja as long as they used the same tactics.

  • @Tareltonlives Samurai were NOT ninjas Samurai never used Ninja tactics. If Samurai wanted that kind of work done for them they will hire Ninja to do it for them. Ninja would unlikely have disguised themselves as samurai unless they wanted to impersonate a particular Samurai.

  • @HouseofAtreus01 And some ninjas who were actually Samurai that lived a double life in order to fight dirty.

  • @HouseofAtreus01 I wouldnt say that. there were good samurai and bad samurai. Samurai were Japan's version of Medieval European Knights. Some Samurai did abuse their power and privilage but others used them well, just like in schools, there are good headmasters and bad headmasters.

  • @HouseofAtreus01 nope, that's an urban myth. ninjas were actually members of the samurai class who simply specialized in espionage and unconventional warfare. they were as much samurai as other samurai.

  • @HouseofAtreus01 no the knowing know and say thta only the samurai were ninja, the abused peasants (that were tired of it) you spoke of, were the Ikko Ikki

  • @HouseofAtreus01 no they werent, ninjas WERE samurai, if you look at actual records it was samurai who talked about their techniques peasants were not your average ninjas

  • Hey!!! That guy actually does know Taijutsu. I was put off by that spin kick he did >_<. Ninja only have one kick and its to break the legs and take out the knees.

  • @TheStrawberryLolicon "when in battle"

  • @TheStrawberryLolicon what armor did they wear then?

  • @fallendmr Tatami do. Its light Samurai armor. Ninja disguised themselves as Samurai in battles.

When the need spies, they never wore it because of the weight of the armor will get in the way of the Ninjas movements and will give him away when he tries to be disguised as something else.

  • @TheStrawberryLolicon

what armor did they wear then?

  • Kramer: I dominate the dojo!

Joe: There's no fear in this dojo!

At least there is sound, it's just really quiet, once the volume is turned up, it's fine.

  • Multi-purpose...Ninja's were the Swiss avant a lettre!

  • ninja is a motorcycle :D lol

  • @pyrosimple never herd of green ninja? :)

  • @pyrosimple so is a katana

  • i think the proper terminology is ninjee

    watch?v=LWSN-UIpuUQ

  • @Knifemaster464

No really. Rogue samurai were ronin, not ninjas.

Also, ninjas NEVER wore black. That is a misconception that arose out of Japanese theatre. Ninjas were mostly spies - wearing all black would make them stand out like a sore thumb. Ninjas in reality wore regular peasants clothing in order to blend in with the populace. At night, they wore grey or blue, because black caused a silhouette.

  • isnt sageo the name of that funny little cord used to attach the saya (scabbard) the waist?

  • what is a ninja ?

  • @ZarakiKenpachi32 they were farmers that formed a group to fend of samurai

  • why does none of them use the butt end of the katana to jab the opponent? (thats what is done in the revived western sword schools). ...................the katana has that very long hilt. great for breaking ribs and eye gouging.

  • @acerb45666555 afaik the katanas tang does not extend all the way through the hilt. if you hit someone with it, it might hurt them but would be pretty bad for the katana also. the western swords had pommels built with this in mind.

plus i'm guessing that style mattered, simply bashing someone was probably not Bushido.

  • @acerb45666555 well western methods today are adapted by wider minds

  • lol ninjas my arse.

  • ninja is bad ass.

  • Whether black suits nor straight Ninjato with square tsuba or fighting techniques shown by the famous "Choson Ninja" CAN BE PROVEN HISTORICALLY! It's all modern hype brought in by Eastern cinema and Hollywood movies!

Peter Woodward is just a stage combat instructor. He is not a historian or asia expert. I'll forgive him. ;)))

  • What kind of research did they do for this? Ninja Ken? wtf?

Next thing you know they get Choson as an "expert"

  • ok they got this all wrong

  • ninja WERE actually samurai

  • @Amarksyhk yup remember, samurai = class ninja = job.
