Thanks for the video. Good to see vegan families. I assume the fast food ride was just an experiment and not a habit? Whole foods all the way vegan friends.
Thanks for this video! I could have sworn the torilla from taco bell had DATEM in it but after watching this video, I went to their website and double checked and to my surprise, no DATEM! :D Awesome!! Now I want a 7-layer burrito lol
i never knew the fries at McDonalds had beef flavoring in them, I'm vegetarian, not vegan, but i dont like animal fat in my foods. Do you know if they have lard in them?
So i'm thinking of turning vegetarian but what are the do's and don'ts?! like what do i eat and what do i have to stay away from?! cz i'm new 2 all of this!
@imachillbra From vegetarian-restaurants[dot]net: "The French fries used to contain natural flavorings derived from meat products (chicken based amino acid) and now the French fries do not contain any natural flavoring derived from meat products and are therefore suitable for vegetarians. They are cooked separate from any meat products."
@imachillbra If you're talking about burger king's fries, then you're wrong. Burger King uses canola oil for all their fryers and the fries are placed in an entirely different fryer than the other products. Not even the onion rings are fried in the french-fry-fryers.
If you weren't talking about the burger king fries, then nevermind :P
VERY helpful!!! I've always had troublee eating out as a vegan! espeiclaly when were on the road and need a quick stop for food. that smoothie lookss soo good!
i'm not trying to be rude to you, but if you're vegan way would you support the horrible fast food industry by buying stuff from fast food resturants? it's nice to see people being careful to avoid animal products when eating out, but how could you give that "food" to your kids? i've been vegan for about for years and i would never give money to a fast food place, even if it was to buy a cup of water and a bowl of lettuce, i wouln't even buy anything there for my friends who already eat at there
1. We're not vegans. Winona is a vegetarian (we raise our own chickens for eggs and eat raw cheeses), but makes vegan recipes because they can be enjoyed by all kids.
2. In the video my son says (this is the most fast food I've had in my life." The kids rarely eat fast food.
3. Winona's videos are for all kids - even kids who may eat the Standard American Diet. And in this video, she's simply giving them alternatives when they may be at a fast food place.
@MrPsychoSquid Fast food restaurants are no different than most grocery stores, neighborhood restaurants, and local farmers markets... because they also sell meat and animal products. We don't have an agenda to stop people from eating animal products... only to give kids healthy alternatives and show them how they can become conscious eaters.
wow - so glad i found your channel. i became vegetarian 2 months ago. good to know mcdonalds has beef flavored fries (yuck), but good thing i dont eat there anyways.
p.s. cute kids! and lol at your son hugging the giant ice cream.
You might already know this, but most fast food restaurants don't pay the extra money to use a more healthy type of oil for their french fries. I am a vegetarian and usually eat fries about once a month from my oven, and use practically no oil. But great video!
@VeggieWinona cool..oh yeah, be careful with the french fries because they use the same oil to fry chicken and fish so their might be animal fat in the oil.
@Dangerwinn Yeah, that's the problem with eating out anywhere that serves meat too. For vegans it's really hard. We don't eat out that much so I don't mind.
Cute video, Winona! Great job researching. Too bad the places do not have more options for you other than fries. :) Start a revolution! "We forgot the frosties!!" lol
I am enjoying reading all the comments posted here, this was a great video. My feelings are that even if a fast food item may technically be considered Vegan, keep in mind it is prepared in a meat shop, and I doubt that employees are careful about making sure Vegan items do not come into contact with meat products, or surfaces that non-vegan products have been prepared on.
@Thoughtfulguy68 There's a thin line we walk everyday between living a healthy and compassionate life and adapting to our surroundings. We're not fast food fans, not because of taste, but because of the companies' policies toward their farmers AND livestock (we love farmers). I can't remember the last time I had a Frosty, but oh my gosh, it tasted good! We raise our own chickens, because we don't want to participate in cruelty. This was just a guide for kids in "transition". Baby steps :)
@417VEGAN McDonald's has recently started using non-animal derived L- cysteine in their apple pie, but not their cherry pie which is not a nationally distributed item (and not available at our McDonald's). The natural flavors are also listed as being from a (plant source). There are older reports online that state that the L- cysteine is from a non-human animal source (most likely duck feathers), but this was the answer I got when I called corporate.
@417VEGAN Let me stress that this was the answer I GOT... it's up to you to believe or not believe the source. We don't eat fast food with any kind of regularity, so we don't stress about every ingredient.
@genghisgirl Yeah, Don't think I would trust the source-But good to know. ;)
But,Might be right....I first read about the 'duck feathers' in a very old Vegetarian cooking magazine. They said they called QA and this was the answer they got...But,That was in the early 90's.
Wait WHAT??? Mcdonalds really has beef flavoring in their fries? I thought they switched to like better quality potatos now..... At least thats what the commercial says.....
@hellostrangermay25 Here is the ingredients list from the actual McDonald's website: French Fries: Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*, citric acid [preservative]), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), salt. Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness). Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.
That was a great video! Do you live in Burlington County? I do and all those places and where your mom was driving look very familiar! Keep up the great work!!!!
@xxhellokittyyyxx positive. we checked all the ingredients before we left the house. The list of food we ate: Burger King French Fries, McDonald's Apple Pie, Wendy's Plain Baked Potato, Taco Bell 7 Layer Burrito (no cheese, no sour cream), and a Cold Stone Creamery Citrus Fruit Smoothie
@xxhellokittyyyxx no eggs, no dairy, no gelatin... no animal products whatsoever. the frosties weren't vegan (they contain milk), but we noted that on the video.
@xxhellokittyyyxx nope... we've actually said on both our pages that we're not vegans. we promote cruelty-free organic whole foods and Winona does vegan and raw recipes because everyone can eat them. we raise our own chickens in our backyard for eggs and may even get goats one day for milk and cheese. you can see the chicken videos on my channel: genghisgirl
@tommyk77 Yes, Tommy, our cars are HUGE. We only have one car, but most families have at least two. We have three kids and are professional photographers, so we use our van for business, too... if you look closely you can see some leftover equipment from my last fitness session and my husband's last photo job lying in the back of the van.
@tommyk77 You're speaking another language! How big is a 1.6 liter? Haha. This is our first big car... we used to drive a Saturn sedan. The cost of renting vans for work was too much, so we bought the van. But you're right, it is a gas guzzler. Fortunately we spend half our time in NYC where we don't have to drive at all :)
@BentBuddha You're right. I know a LOT of "junk food vegetarians / vegans" who wonder why they're fat / tired / sick. Winona asked me to do this video with her so she could show vegan kids that they can go out with their friends and not have to exclude themselves from the same activities. If you watch until the end, you'll see my six-year-old say that he's never had this much fast food in his life. This is not the way we eat AT ALL. We all felt terrible at the end of the trip.
@Thoughtfulguy68 of course its better to cook and eat at home but she is a kid and the point was to find things she can eat out when she is with her friends and not be a social outcast.
@Thoughtfulguy68 You're absolutely right. We should have noted that you can get nutrition guides from most restaurants that will list all the ingredients... they're also scary reminders of how much fat and calories all the food has.
@maestrucarnita Ingredients are listed in order of amount... so there's more milk than anything else. And when they list things like "Mono and Diglycerides, Cellulose Gum, Carrageenan, Calcium Sulfate, Disodium Phosphate, Artificial and Natural Flavoring, Vitamin A Palmitate" I tend to believe they're not trying to hide anything... because all that junk is pretty gross.
