I truly feel sorry for you millennial kids who have no frame of reference by which to measure life, outside of the artificial, surreal, electronic-kaleidoscopic world into which you were born. You process reality through your limited range of understanding and think yourselves clever. I was 11 when this film emerged. "Mamma" is a realistic portrayal of the wise black grandmother way back in the day--not like those loud, vile simian creatures one sees on Pervert Maury's menagerie of freaks show.
@unefilleanonyme12 imho, she did the right thing. I was raised in the projects of NYC, I know how it is to be on top of people and and not have no hope so whenever I see that scene, I feel the hope of Mama Younger too.
@11polkadot1 you can't be serious, this is a great movie and everyone played a great role. Anyone else played Momma would not be the same. You must be a youngster not understanding the times. This is one if not the best movie ever made as acting goes but just my opinion.
This is a great play/movie -don't get me wrong- but I wish they would've gotten someone else to play "Momma." This lady is too fake old and kind of over-acts... It bothers me. lol
I see your point, I find many of those "fake" moments to be very funny. But I actually appreciate her skills and actors were trained much differently in her time. Also I don't think there were many mature african american women to choose from.
In contrast, I have issues with the wife, Ruby Dee, I find it difficult to understand her words and thought she was rather bland. Diahann Carroll would have been a great choice IMO.
Whenever I watch Raisin, I immediately zone in on the relationship between Lena and Travis. I too had one of those big bosomy grandmoms, and I was her oldest grandson whom she treated as though I'd hung the moon and stars. When you're Travis's age, there is no earthly problem that grandmom's lap and grandmom's arms can't make better. I got to have that grandmom till I was 27. Also familiar, my mother and grandmom could lock tempers as fiercely as Lena and Walter!
@avatarcollides2day Haha I wouldn't go that far. He is a man full of ambition and dreams. However, like most dreams it is very limited by money. He should be happy for the new house and realize that there will be other investment opportunities. If he would stop wasting his money on booze and start saving he might, just might be ready for the next one. Although, the new baby that is coming is just going to push his dreams further and further away.
Walter Lee, needs to grow up. The mother done the right thing. She's the brain of the family...
