As someone who grew up on the Yardbirds and personally knows Chris Dreja, I can say that every time I have seen them play, they have put on a cracking show. This must have been an off night with the guitarist starting off weak and sick sounding, but he does recover and play some really nice licks at the end. The Yardbirds have had 6 or 7 different incarnations during the past 25 years or so. Some were better than others, but Chris and Jim have remained constant. Long live the Yardbirds!
I've seen this guitarist before when they came to my town. He is actually pretty good. This just sounds like an "off" day. When I saw him he was pretty smokin'. It also sounds like he is struggling with his tone and sound. When it doesn't sound "right" it can also be pretty uninspiring. All bands have better days than others.
Asmorgan88 is right - amateurs belong in the audience, this is so very lame, Eric Jimmy & Jeff did not work as hard as they did just to see these embarrassing kindergarden guitar performances show up on youtube. I never want to see another show with this lineup again. They're never getting my money again either, that includes retail sales of recordings. Jim & Chris need to know that fans are not pleased at all.
@oolongman to an extend i bet they didnt get paid $10,000 for this how like a legitimate real professional tribute band either... you get what you pay for. Its really not THAT bad... i think you guys should post videos of your bands playing these songs.
@asmorgan88 wow really?? Im not to into them... it just looked low budget kinda so i figured it was a tribute band... in that case... not so good anymore. I was convinced it was a tribute band... ouch. haha
@asmorgan88 and your kind of an asshole... it sounds fine to me... not amazing... but good. If he would have played the whole song with the gain boost in the solo i bet you wouldnt have said he sucked. Which he should have.
Who knows, maybe he's a great musician...but, that's irrelevant when it comes to kicking ass. His playing is fluid and sound, but he's lacking balls and grit.
You don't have to be a great musician to be a great guitarist, & vice versa.
He may be schooled, but he does not know, or realize, that balls and power are more important in rock & roll than musicianship.
@asmorgan88 I agree with most of that but I wouldnt say balls and power are more important, I mean it all depends on genre and relevance, and he plays this fine for the genre
I saw this line up at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA. I thought that they did a great job, especially the singer. But I was disappointed to see the guitarist using a Strat. I see that he now has a Tele and it sounds and looks great.
It's not that I don't like Strats, but for me the Tele has a special connection with The Yardbirds. Eric used a red Tele with a rosewood fretboard. Jeff Beck used a white blonde Esquire (essentially a Tele without a neck pickup). And Jimmy Page used an olympic white Tele with a rosewood fretboard that was given to him by Jeff Beck. Jimmy laiter stripped the finish off and painted a design that resembles a dragon on it.
john idan is a hell of alot better singer then kieth relf by far!

Sadly, this isn't a "tribute" band...this is the actual band.
And, it doesn't sound like them...it sucks.

I gauge how good a guitarist is based on whether or not I can play what they're playing, or if I can play what they're playing better...
I'll go ahead and say that this kid isn't a good guitarist.

@marshman500
Yeah, amazing...except for the fact that it doesn't sound a thing like The Yardbirds...and uh, it IS them...
So, in short - it fucking sucks.
...Seems like you know exactly what the song is missing, & what the band needs to do in order for it to come across as effective...fuckstick.

How come you were disappointed to see a Strat? I love Strats! I love Tele's too, just curious as to why you don't like Strats? Thanks!

So, as you can see there's special connection between the lead guitarist of The Yardbirds and the Telecaster.

Too bad he can't play either, they need to find someone who isn't a slagger.
