McDonald is a good musician, but should leave the black guy shit up to a black buy. Better, just sit down and play. Really---if he does have a real voice---his performance sucks. His delivery is so strained, it's hard to sit through this without wincing. Wanna hear a fun version of this tune? Check out the Brooklyn Bridge.
Johnny Maestro, an immeasurably better singer than McDonald is, even in his
wildest dreams, isn't in top form, by his standards, but still . . . .
wow one note Michael McDonald. Great job of barely getting by on this song. You are the Darius Rucker of the Doobie Brothers. I forget, where are you now?
I love this song...I love this film!!! Is the best song I have ever heard....The best film!! I love it!! I really love it...!!! Since the first time i watched the film "Leaving Las Vegas" I ve drunk more and more...
@Inspector711 You know, this is the ONLY song he sings, that I like. I think that's because of two things: 1. I loved the movie; 2. this song, with his distinct voice, grew on me. But if you listen, he misses not beat, he misses no notes. His voice kinda, kinda reminds me of Gregg Allman's voice... non-silky-smooth, perfect for the part. Something like a character actor.... fits one part perfectly.
This is a killer album. I've owned is for several years. "Madison Time" will make you want to get up and form a "big strong line". Miss Snow is nothing less than stellar on "Shakey Ground" and also along with Mr. McDonald on "Knock on Wood". Buy this album, you won't be sorry. Boz Scaggs also does a very soulful version of "Drowning in the Sea Of Love". Great album.
The backup singers are incredibly full in their sound. The value of the sisters are often so underrated. Michael is wonderful, and the instrumentals are great, but these women really round out the sound.
The backup singers are incredibly full in their sound. The value of the sisters are often so underrated. Michael is wonderful, and the instrumentals are great, but these women really round out the sound.
@gauthik100 Hey, they are the same people that pay lots of money to sit in the front row of comedy clubs and try to heckle the comedians. (Not a Richard Pryor or an Andrew Dice Clay one though because they'd get what's coming to them lol.)
Samba, Ramba... or, just plain TOO MUCH FUN!!!! No matter how you slice, or categorize it... what a blast! =)
To luvureally: No, NO one can ever replicate Jackie. That's why (HE'S why!) this is, and will always be in my top favorite 25 or so songs in my life. But give it to Mike & Don (genius), this is sweet to listen to.

Steely Dan was/is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. There never was a 'band'. This video clip, if you read my description, (which I think you did not) is Donald's early 1990's solo effort, and only linked to SD because he is identifiable in that regard.
For the people who think Berry Gordy, Jr. was inconsiderate to many of his artists, it is songs like this that started his fantastic legacy as a songwriter. "Lonely Teardrops", "To Be Loved", "Do You Love Me?", and "Money (That's What I Want)" were all written of co-written by BG, Jr....Pretty amazing, I would say!
Michael is nowhere near the stage performer that the great Jackie Wilson was, but DAMN he can sing..... and this cover is musically so tight, it squeaks. Great R&B work!
@tenorbear60 It is a feature of McDonald in that he never tries to emulate or just copy the original. He puts his own stamp on it. You're absolutely right that he is no Jackie Wilson... and the best thing is he doesn't try to be.
The idea anyone would want to attempt to cover this song is a credit to these brave artists. Jackie I think would have loved what Don and Michael did with this very complex tune. It's not Jackie, and it can't be.
@MrBostonmisfit Copy that, mate. I bought the CD, and when I got home and realized this song was missing, I thought it was something close to a rip-off; especially as this number is played, what, at least twice in the movie?
Bad marketing. But this longer version, with the instrumental section, extended, is superior.
Yes, it's not the rich complex harmonic structure that you expect from Steely Dan or Michael McDonald. It's a (gasp!) OLDIES tune. But that's ok. Listen to the emotion that McDonald gives it. And there's so little to work with in this melody, and still he makes it beautiful. These musicians knew how to take a very simple song, and make it special. There's genius in this performance. Give it another listen...
I agree, for these haters: just try to sing or play this song or sing it live, before you spill out your comments, you'll fall splat on the floor for sure!! (hahaha). Michael McDonald is the man to dish out these songs.

great version. love his singing but the man's not gonna when any dance contest. The man moves like the Tin Man without his oil can. Sing that Song MM!!!
I own Leaving Las Vegas and it says in the end credits this song is used with permission. they couldnt get it on the soundtrack. I love this song because it's a music show song alll jolly and into it, and Ben is sort of sad getting away from it all. It fits the movie perfectly. makes it can of more dramatic. Good Song
It's interesting all of the comments about this being in Leaving Las Vegas, but , apparently when the soundtrack to this film (which I have not seen) was released, this song was not included. Any ideas?
OK, MGMHD is running this film as I type. I sat down to watch it, and 21 minutes into it this song comes up. It is when the Nick Cage figure is arriving in Las Vegas, meeting the hooker, driving along with a bottle of vodka to his mouth. I'll continue watching to get to the end, but, man, this is a sick film (to this point). What would Jackie Wilson think about it? I don't know what I think about it, but Nick is very convincing.
The same shit happened to me last night, i was watchin a nicholas cage film and dis song came up so i looked it up immediately however i didnt finish the movie, lol
PLEASE DONT READ THIS!In 1971 a guy named Kyle an his girlfriend Emily were in side a house that was said to claim peoples lives if they entered the house. The next morning a guy named Alex saw fingernail marks on the door.if you dont post this to 5 videos, youll be getting a visit from Kyle and Emily tonight!WARNING:this has been proved to be real,i value my life!whoever reads this may God be with you! I TRULY DO APOLOGIZE!!! PS i got this from another vid ( i am not taking my chances
Never saw the movie, and the soundtrack on Amazon or Wikipedia doesn't list it. This performance has nothing to do with a movie, only a TV show on A&E. Glad you liked it, tho!
Actually a lot of people are gonna mention Leaving Las Vegas because the song figured so prominently in the movie as Nic Cage's character, Ben, is leaving his former life behind & heading to Vegas to slowly drink himself to death.
The catchiest song on "Leaving Las Vegas" by far... liked listening to it better when it was played with the movie's imagry and I couldn't make out the words rather than this, though. Sadly, I think this video lessened the song for me, but that doesn't matter. I'll always remember the one scene where Elizabeth Shue prepares to go out on the town after taking Nicholas Cage into her home, doing her make-up as the song plays in the backgroud. A classic moment that I'll always remember the movie by.
oh my god!! great song !!!!!

Whoa, long sentence huh? :)
