@AlexFromCooks IDK why, I think that's how CSX programs their crossing bells. MBTA used to do the same things at the crossings they own, but now the bells ring the whole time the lights flash.
a full/nearly ful set of bilevels are VERY heavy. The F40PHM-2Cs (the clones) all either have or are developing loading problems. Loading problems + heavy train = slow.
I was surprised that the engine wasn't 1032 or 1036. Those two are absolute pieces of junk. The engineer would throttle up to notch 8, but we'd be going at 20mph.
@ or from 3:10 -to- 3:50 that train is beat up, grafiti and it has a crappy horn, not to mention it's speed, talk about going slow, a car to beat that thing in a race, haha.
They might be open because it either just left the station or is approaching the station. I notice on Septas that the doors are still open as it is leaving the station.
I'm also interested in those crossing signals and the traffic lights with them. Can you start a video sooner to show what takes place with the traffic lights there? Great vids!
If you want, the way these lights work is as follows:
When preemption begins, the signals at the tracks go to red; at the same time, Front St gets a red ball with green right arrow onto Main; Main St southbound gets a red ball with green left arrow onto Front. Main St SouthBound at Pleasant gets a red ball, NB at Pleasant gets a green ball and arrow. Homer Ave gets a green ball to Summer St; Main St crossing Homer Ave in both directions gets a red ball. Google Map search "Ashland MA" for a map!
great video, lots of action. i love how MBTA mixes standard and bi-level coaches. ashland looks like a nice little town too. but how do you kids (including my friend jimmy, NJT4111)tell the difference between a canadian and a regular K5L. i can tell K5L from S3L(my favorite) and S3K, etc. but you kids are amazing with horns.
Except for the first and the last train in your video, which featured very nice sounding K5LA's, the rest of the horns were pitiful. Sounds like the junk they use on a lot of UP and BNSF locomotives. Good video though.
That train in the middle must of had a caution signal and that's why he was going by very slowly.
It's Saturday morning and for some reason the commutter trains are blowing their horns as they come in to the North Billerica Station, they usually don't.
I noticed that water ban sign at the begining of the video. I guess Billerica is not the only town with a water ban going on.
That Volvo driver should've had a coffee that morning. I really expected the gate to hit his car from this angle. I wonder what the conductor was thinking... ("What the??!??.... well whateverrr..")
And why is the bottom light so small?

Why does this crossing need a traffic light to guard it?

I thought GP40-MCs had more problems than the F40PHs did.

Where are the bells on this crossing? I can't see them anywhere in this video, although they sound like Safetran Hybrid bells.

Nice horn from the GP40, F40PH, and cab cars. Does this level crossing have quad quadrant gates?

I think by law they both have to sound their horns. The only exception is if they're in a quiet zone.
