  • This guy came to our school, we all though 'Eh! What a fool this guy is! LOL' but as the assembly went by, we knew this guy isn't your average guy. Very inspirational no doubt, and we thank you for sharing your story, I'm sure it touched all our hearts when you explained to us about such a horrific unexplainable torture you had to endure.. Thank you Emmanuel.

  • Not just him. He's been through sooooo much and he says he's not doin this for him. He's doin it for the kids goin through that shit now, and for the kids he was on the run with, who died or got out. He just happens to be a great writer and artist.

  • This is the point from which I could never return

And if I back down now then forever I burn

This is the point from which I could never retreat

Cause If I turn back now there can never be peace

This is the point from which I will die and succeed

Living the struggle, I know I'm alive when I bleed

From now on it can never be the same as before

Cause the place I'm from doesn't exist anymore

  • you better watch what the fuck flies out of your mouth or ima hijack a plane and fly it into your house

  • True Respect. Nothing more to say.

  • his book is amazing, and his ability to convey through music and words is amazing.

  • o..hmm wow thats tough

  • I don't usually listen to this kind of music but the book touched my heart.

  • i'm reading his book now, half way through it .. quite amazing

  • Yeah i now what you mean datkai but aye come on hes bin a warchild!!!

  • Absolutely amazing

  • Wtf why do you say that if you was a warchild you not acting so tuf like you doing now hymen2

  • i watched the war child movie for a school trip it was amazing everyone in the theatre was touched

  • Good Job Jal. Africa is a continent blessed with natural resources and great weather. Unfortunately the endless wars have retarted development, led to the death of many people and destruction of property. The very western governments calling for peace talks are the ones providing guns and ammunitions to the rebels and dictatorial governments. Africa has the smallest gun-manufacturing facilities but suffers from the greatest deaths due to guns..

  • who the hell is TED??

  • TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It's a conference (yearly?) that features "remarkable talks" by "remarkable people." Emmanuel Jal gave a speech at a recent one.

  • respect!

    i'm reading your book!

  • Hey I read about Emmanuel in a chapter in the book; AK47, story of the people's gun.

I can't believe Geldof didn't put you main stage, well done on taking the Cornish wing of the Live Aid though.

    God Bless.

  • TED bump, sent a donation, would like the school to get built.

  • Thanks TED

  • Thanks TED great stuff.

  • apart from iTunes, is this album available anywhere else?

  • love this <3

    big ups, baby!

  • Big thanks to TED!

  • rise up.

  • Another TED bumper here! This is what REAL hip-hop does, it's all the art of storytelling and very powerful stuff being said here.

Check out K'naan as well, another artist with some profound messages in his music.

  • I hate rap, this, this actually doesn't drive me crazy, Ted sent me here.

  • This isn't rap, it's hip-hop. There is a difference, but both reflect the voices of those who deal with life on different levels. Rap has been turned into a commercial product by the industry and has lost a lot of its voice in the process as it doesn't resemble what the early pioneers put out.

But different strokes for different folks, it's not for everyone and I respect that.

  • no, commercial product rap is just more public, rap lives underground

  • If it's mainstream and only speaks of hos, money, cars and clothes and has no message, it's commercial entertainment and not true rap as it has then evolved into a commercial product and has not maintained the art form that it is.

  • yes, but there are still artists who are not that at all

  • Then now is the time for them to rise and shine...

  • i heard his interview on npr a long time ago and could never find him.

    thanks TED

  • Yeah TED always gets people to look at things.

  • this guy is incredible, thank you TED haha

  • TEDtalks bump!

  • His TEDtalk brought me here.

  • haha same :P

  • Oh my gawd.. ur music is emaazin... ur book is even more emazzzin. it brings sadness into my eyes readin

about all the struggles that u went through!=[

  • Keep it up man god bless you

  • I am a 15 yr old sudanese rapper, I was only a child when i came to australia, so i have not bad memory about my homeland...Wat Emmanuel talks is something I hear a lot because many people have throught it. Emmanuel is an inspiration to all young sudanese who want to be part of the music industry in the future

  • I have seen Emmanuel and he is so awesome and blessed by the grace of God. His testimoney are so sad and it is really fanastic what he trying to do helping those children who used to be child soldier giving them their childhood back that he missed out. God bless u.

  • Hey Emmanuel (by the way, awesome name! Do you know what it means? God is with you man!),

I read about you yesterday (De Pers, Dutch newspaper) and I wanted to check you out on the internet. I really appreciate the work you're doing, even though I can't imagine how it must be to live in war.

I wish you all good and God bless!

    Michaël

  • I found an interview in ´De Pers´ this morning, I read it and now I searched for your music.

I never were in a war, because The Netherlands doesn´t have one in my whole live, well, not that directly attacks me... But I understand the point that you want´s to maken!

Good music, good story, good beat.

    Awesome!

Please go on rappin´, hope things will change soon.

    Greets from someone from Holland!

  • I bought his book yesterday and finished it this morning. He is an amazing man I really admire him.

I really want his albums, I'm not going to download it like I usually do with albums though, I want to give my money to him and his cause :)

  • keep living brother. T.I.A ( This Is Africa)

we will one day have true peace and experience humility.

    keep telling your story.

    p.s i love the book

  • amazing book

  • Emmanuel Jal gave a speech in SLU today and I can tell how terrible it is to be a warchild.

He's a lucky one who survives to sing for peace. God bless Emmanuel Jal.

  • we had an asembly about him in skool today i hadnt heard of him before it

  • peace

  • Amazing life story of suffering and his on-going search for redemption ... savage beauty. The words convey his intent, but the music is so upbeat that I worry it will make the idea of being a "war child" appear glamorous rather then horrific to the hip hop crowd. Nevertheless, he is an artist worthy of respect and support.

  • Emmanual Jal is a blessing, people like him make a diffrence in the world, GOD BLESS EMANUAL JAL!

  • I was in Books-a-Million today and saw war child and just had to get it.

  • islamist no such thing its called muslims and if you are so sure than tell me the difference between the 2

  • I am Muslim and believe that religion should be seperated from governance while islamist is the person who wants to adopt an islamic regime or rule.... google the word and you would see the difference in news it's defined as follows in your dictionary:

    Is·lam·ist (iz läm′ist, is-; --lam′-; iz′ləm ist)

    noun

an advocate or supporter of Islamic, esp. orthodox Islamic, political rule

    adjective

of or pertaining to Islamists, their political and social goals, etc.
