Question 2. I am looking for a good pad that will help with relieving pressure on his top line, and there are so many on the market. The CSI pad looks to be the one I should be interested but it seems like that is a pad that I should find a dealer to help me 'fit' it and there are none around me. What, in your opinion, would be a comparable pad(s) that I can start with? I've thought about trying the biofit by classic equine or an impact gel.
I've got a question( a couple actually). I have a senior horse with a diminishing topline and kind of a high hip. 1. Should I use a bigger (longer) pad to avoid the sore that comes up from time to time about where my pad ends( about where he begins to rise to his hip, he's not sway back)?
@dixiecookie Well, the problem you have here with a horse that has a higher hip, is that the pad is running into that hip and creating a pressure point. Having a pad that goes over it may not help much, because you don't really remove the pressure. What I would recommend is a pad and saddle skit that terminates prior to that spot, if possible.
I love how you added that a blanket IS NOT a pad. I was at my stable, and someone was giving a lesson, and a girl put one of the blankets that we used to cover the saddles on a lesson horse. The horse kept trying to bite her once she put on the saddle (it was like,a 60 lbs. saddle too!). After she threw a tantrum to her daddy, I told her she didn't have a pad, she was just totally clueless.
Surprisingly enough, there are enough people who have watched old westerns and think that is how it works. One of the differences was the fact that most modern saddles people are buying are made with fake shearling, which does not have the cushion of real shearling. Not that saddles with real shearling can go without a pad, but just to say they have more cushioning properties than fake sheepskin.
Ok I have a question about the wool saddle pads. i have a reallythick one with the pockets on the side so I can add extra padding in areas I might need it.Well how do I wash it I am afraid to because its wool. And it will take very long to dry out, I would think. I like the pad with the neoprene.
I was wondering about that one maybe My mare has a bit of a swayback and I have to be extremely careful on what I use.I need something that will keep saddle up in the back, comfort, weight distribution
Wool pads are easy to clean and maintain. Brush regularly to get the hair out. To wash, spray your pad down with water, and using your hand or a curry in a circular motion, rub the dirty areas until the dirt comes up, and hang it to dry. Something like woolite can help clean it too. Woolite is also good for your saddle's shearling. The reason I like the neoprene is it cleans faster. For your mare, I'd go with the pad you have, as long as it is a properly made wool felt that won't stretch.
