I get the clue when I start tripping over things, and walking around in circles trying to figure out where to put my latest "ultimate shiny object." The true reflection of my personal wealth is now resting in the contents of my refridgerator, and the energetic spring in my step.
And the last year or two I have been more miserable about affluence than ever. I am planning to move -- to a studio. And I will only take what I need & what I truly enjoy. Everything else will stay with my parents or go to charity. Affluenza gives me influenza! Well, I'm joking about the flu, but you get the message. Enough stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I wouldn't use such ugly language, Skribble, but I do think there is too much stuff. I have been complaining to my family that I wish they had not given me so much stuff for Christmas, birthdays, etc. As far as fun stuff, all I want is books, my electronic keyboard, my CD player, & my radio. Besides that I just want the necessities & nothing more. My parents say they gave me all that stuff out of love, but sorry if I sound ungrateful; I don't want it.
I grew up in NJ and with the property values dropping, property taxes rising, bills getting out up hand (and the fact my hometown went to shit) my parents sold the house and moved to their cabin getaway on some acreage in PA that was already paid off. They have never been happier. Let me tell you until you move you dont relize how much shit you have. Even shit you dont even use. Its kinda disgusting. Not saying go to the country or live in a 10x12 but prioritize.
For anyone looking for a great source of information on Affluenza symptoms, treatments, books etc. You may want to check out Author Jessie O'Neills new site just google on "The Affluenza Project"
Its probably the best site that I have found on the subject.
Oh yes I learned to downsize... while living in Whistler.
We have a small house... in another resort community.
Often I walk downtown to shop or pick up the mail and never even use my car. Far from the nearest mall, I shop only for basics. I work less (yes I am a working mom ) and enjoy my children more...
I have sponsored a child since 1998 ... and I just want to say here that I am NOT suffering for my lifestyle. Do not cry for me.
Poverty stricken people around the world are NOT starving because Americans consume to much. The USA feeds more people world wide than any other country on the face of the earth. "Simple living" advocates DO have a great message that I totally agree with though. Americans are generally spoiled. Excessive consumption breeds dissatisfaction. Great video!
true, it is because of our consumerism that we buy so much from third world countries. if we did not buy so much junk china would not be doing so well,
I am all for prosperity. There really isn't anything wrong with material wealth itself. The problem is when people fall prey to the massive onslaught of advertising and marketing of "bigger, better & more"
again i agree, only in america can you live in a house, drive a bmw, have a flat panel tv, nintendo, computers, three cell phones and do it all on welfare. we have the richest poor people on earth, in fact our poor do better than the middle class schmucks like me
Have you ever looked at the back of any of the junk you buy and seen distinctively written "Made in China"? Do you know what that means? It means 5 cents an hour, poverty, environmental destruction, China is just one example and it is the most polluted country on earth because we western nations offshore the horrible costs of environmental destruction to other weaker nations who have no say in such matters.

Socio-economic status is everything. You can have all the money in the world but be a complete trainwreck.

johnmonk66, your views are disgusting. There are actually poor people out there, people without houses, and who have no future. OPEN your eyes!

You forgot about...whats that thing, um, don't tell me, I think they call it, or used to call it reading.
Thinking about God without getting all funda-mental about it. Think about all those girls who do porno.
They are ripe for fundamentalism. The ones who buy
into fundamentalism better get married fast because
when they wake up they'll be trapped and unable to
do anything about it.
