I saw Chilliwack, at a church across from my school many years ago before they were famous because the school used to sell tickets for this.. Only payed $2.00
Also Mahogany Rush along with April Wine at the same deal. Love it when bands are just starting out. Also saw Super Tramp at a country fair in my home town in Quebec. Wish this stuff was possible now. I miss it. :)
A GREAT song that should've been #1 across the world. Like many others I'm sure, I had a girlfriend at the time this song came out, and it provided the soundtack for one of those early relationships that was both glorious and heartbreaking.
I was really good friends with Stewart Machin. He lived just down the street from me,i used to go over to his place all the time, with Caeser and we would stay over and try to get his brothers bands equipment downstairs to check it out.One thing i remember was when Alex bought a new car i think he got the money from royalties or something. He took us for a ride in it.Alex also gave Stew his beautiful red Gibson SG ( Ithink it was an early sixties model) ah memories,ya can't beat them.

Ahhh...waltzing to this in junior high and playing drums to it after school. That IS life and good clean fun and romance defined. Glad to see they still perform it flawlessly:-).
A Foot in Coldwater was formed in Toronto in 1970 from three bands. Leggat, Taylor, and Horne had been members of Nucleus, and the Lords of London. Machin and Naumann were in the band Island. Together, they signed with Daffodil Records, which coined the group's name. (Wikipedia)
I just read an opinion piece in the newspaper about Canadian guitarists.

@LolaCrazy222 in those days American promoters or labels didn't look to Canada you would have to go to the us and bang on doors or some how get on stage like The Guess Who did the last band that was forced to do that was Bare Naked ladies they were huge in Canada about 8 years before anyone knew them in the USA
@DavidandI2 Yeah, same here. Chilliwack is another good example. They were popular in Canada for a good long time before they were popular here in the U.S. with the song "My Girl (Gone,Gone,Gone)". At least down here we can listen to Canadian hits on Canadian stations on the Internet. I heard "(Make Me Do) Anything You Want" by A Foot In Cold Water on MAX 98.7 in Sydney. I heard the eariler hits in Canada by Chilliwack too on MAX 98.7.
One of the most beautiful love songs I've heard in my entire life. The magic of music is the day came when the woman it was meant to be danced to came into my life many years ago.A Friday night, a chilled bottle of wine, and the beginning of the happiest moments of my life.
Just wanted to let you know that this song was my parents' song when they were in University....my dad died about 2 weeks ago due to a heart attack, but he praised this band

Paul Naumann was a comet blazing across our hearts leaving a spectacular trail.
A unique talent, and an equally unique man.
I met him in the beginning of 1970. I introduced Paul and Alex to the boys in Nucleus who later changed their name to A Foot in Coldwater. Few people know that fact. We had a special connection. I will miss him forever. My heart goes out to his beloved family,

It is with deep sadness that I must inform you all of the passing of Paul Naumann, lead guitarist for A Foot in Coldwater. He passed in his sleep on October 20, 2009 in his home in New Mexico. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his son Paul Jr. and Hannah his daughter. RIP Paul - we will all miss you......
@petecsanky So sorry to hear about Paul's passing. I was a good friend of his back in the '70's but lost touch over the years. My sincere condolencess to his family. R.I.P. my friend, we'll jam again on the other side, L&R Leo Nieberg aka. "Leo DeLyon"
Excellent!!! Where on earth did you find this video? I heard this song for the 1st time in the early '80's when I came across my mom's "Canadian Mint" album. I thought the album had a cool cover so I carefully took out the record & put it on my turntable. I'd never heard of any of the artists on this record, but I absolutely loved every song on it but this is the one I loved the most & I played it over & over & over!
how bout this .....could you have done better and if so...can you still.....and if you can what the heck are you doing debating whose best at what..just get to it.. time is a wasting.........meanwhile I'll enjoy the music that's been done.. and proven..the people have spoken.. hehe
There's a Canadian band that covered this in the early 90s "helix" they didn't do it justice but you should check it out anyway, it's not bad they made it a little heavier, It's awesome as well but you can cover something like this
timeless memories of timeless 'toons'..spent a few pockets of dimes on this one..stuffing them into the jukeboxes around town here..sigghhh..I want those times back..
Pure early 70s. A stellar song. I love his bellbottom pants. (I grew up with bells, thinking that all pants had always been like that....until the 80s came along.) This song should have gone farther than it did....and I wish it were longer.
Wonderful. I've got the original 1st LP and 2 singles including this one on vinyl in the loft (on Elektra I think) and a CD "A Foot In Cold Water" from 1993 with the single and 7 other tracks (on LMT Records, probably a boot). Great band, sounding like a blueprint for Foreigner on many tracks. I was playing the CD today and thought I'd look on YouTube for them
OHHHH MYYYYYY GAWD!!! Incredible.... I am so glad footage exists of these guys... what a phenominal singer... and what an incredible, original guitar solo.... This guy has an incredible voice..... Thanks ever so much for posting this... One of the reasons I got into music and a guitar solo I worked out and play that still sends chills down my spine.... Melody, melody, melody... this song has it in spades!!!!
love this tune; paul naumann, petecsanky said it best, you had to this guy live to really hear em play, naumann had such stage presense, wicked strat man,
Great song written by their excellent drummer, Danny ("Crow")Taylor. Paul Naumann's outstandingly classy guitar solos had to be heard live to be fully appreciated. Alex Machin is one of the finest Canadian singers around. Goddo always used to want to play bass as well as Hughie Leggat. Bob ("Hippy") Horne could be counted on to really crank it out from his growling Hammond B3 organ when they played this tune on stage. Another great Canadian band from an era of great music.....
saw em at massey hall with ELO....Climax Blues Band was the opening band...they..failed to show..they called Foot in Cold Water...they came to Massey Hall and did a great show and this is a rock classic of all time
Wow, what a thrill to find this, one of my favorite songs of all time. I remember someone saying once there was some sort of cross over between this band and sniff and the tears, any truth to that?
I still have a copy of the original vinyl from 1972 and it sounds great. Any truth to the story that the band name was decided on the road when someone made the comment that they were a foot in Coldwater (Ontario) and they thought that would make a good name?
Well that rumour is half true. Being in Coldwater Ontario did have something to do with the name but "A Foot In Coldwater" is also a way to say shocking among other things.
Hey Chancesdad. Type in Helix, and their version is now here..sounds really good. I know Helix is Canadian, but I think "A Foot in Cold Water"..maybe British. If I am wrong..sorry guys.
what year was this released and what city were your dad and co. from? I am in Kitchener and our boys Helix did a nice remake of this one....Cheers....

Another great Canadian band from an era of great music.....

on top of his piano....

69Lovett, God bless you! I am immensely enjoying all your posts. Some rare and wonderful Canadian gems here. Thanks so much!
Is that Geddy Lee's tear-drop bass he's playing there?
antoniosoul 3 years ago
Nope... that's Hugh Leggat's.
That bass goes back to the Nucleus days.. and you can see him still playing it in 1988 on
A Foot in Coldwater's "Midnight Lady" or Hughie Leggat's "Our Love Will Never Die" vid on this channel...
I find it odd to see him without it these days..
Cheers

Wow, what a thrill to find this, one of my favorite songs of all time. I remember someone saying once there was some sort of cross over between this band and sniff and the tears, any truth to that?

sniff and the tears...?
No connection that I'm aware of.
Cheers eh.

Awesome band! My dad is the drummer, Danny Taylor and I know Alex & Hughey personally. Great guys and amazing band!

I still have a copy of the original vinyl from 1972 and it sounds great. Any truth to the story that the band name was decided on the road when someone made the comment that they were a foot in Coldwater (Ontario) and they thought that would make a good name?
IMunlucky 4 years ago
Well that rumour is half true. Being in Coldwater Ontario did have something to do with the name but "A Foot In Coldwater" is also a way to say shocking among other things.

Seems hard to find sixties, early seventies canadian stuff like Mandala, or the Paupers , or even Mother Tuckers Yellow Duck ! thanks for the post !

Hey Chancesdad. Type in Helix, and their version is now here..sounds really good. I know Helix is Canadian, but I think "A Foot in Cold Water"..maybe British. If I am wrong..sorry guys.

what year was this released and what city were your dad and co. from? I am in Kitchener and our boys Helix did a nice remake of this one....Cheers....
chancesdad 4 years ago
The band is from Toronto..
The record was released in '72 and then again in '74.
The original ('72) is longer and IMHO the best version..
Garry Lee and Showdown also recorded a C&W version of the song..
