  • RIP Paul Naumann.

  • @skeena59 Yeah he was great in Cool Hand Luke .

  • @jsilence418 Huh? The hell you talking about? That was Paul Newman the actor. Paul Naumann was a guitarist with Foot in Cold Water and is easily recognized by his fluid guitar solo on the break. He passed away Oct 20, 2009.

  • @skeena59 yeah an Hud an the Hustler yep R.I.P. a damn fine actor ! they say a foot in cold water makes you pee, I dunno though.

  • Playing the Sound Academy, Toronto, on Friday April 8 2011

  • This song is right up there with my favourite songs growing up in my teens that take you to that special place in your heart. Good memories. We were so lucky to grow up listening to so much fantastic music - of all types.

  • Such a beautiful ballad

  • I saw Chilliwack, at a church across from my school many years ago before they were famous because the school used to sell tickets for this.. Only payed $2.00

Also Mahogany Rush along with April Wine at the same deal. Love it when bands are just starting out. Also saw Super Tramp at a country fair in my home town in Quebec. Wish this stuff was possible now. I miss it. :)

  • Great song. I lean toward the Helix cover but this is fabulous as well

  • we sing this at work all the time.. only the lyrics have been changed and name to "double-sided sticky tape"

  • A GREAT song that should've been #1 across the world. Like many others I'm sure, I had a girlfriend at the time this song came out, and it provided the soundtack for one of those early relationships that was both glorious and heartbreaking.

  • I was really good friends with Stewart Machin. He lived just down the street from me,i used to go over to his place all the time, with Caeser and we would stay over and try to get his brothers bands equipment downstairs to check it out.One thing i remember was when Alex bought a new car i think he got the money from royalties or something. He took us for a ride in it.Alex also gave Stew his beautiful red Gibson SG ( Ithink it was an early sixties model) ah memories,ya can't beat them.

  • Awesome song, reminds me of that slow dance with the girl I married later in life...

  • Used to slow dance to this in high school...best song to cop a feel, aahh the teen years, I miss thee.

  • Such a simple song, but so very powerful to the heart. :))

  • I heard this song used in the movie lucky girl with elisha cuthbert. good movie and good tune.

  • wow it was great to hear this song after such a long time to see them from the old dys when i was with leigh asford loved danny and the boys howes bob horne

  • Ahhh...waltzing to this in junior high and playing drums to it after school. That IS life and good clean fun and romance defined. Glad to see they still perform it flawlessly:-).

  • Great song. Great solo. Great singing. Great era.

  • Got to love this stuff and the simpler times. Thank guys!

  • A Foot in Coldwater was formed in Toronto in 1970 from three bands. Leggat, Taylor, and Horne had been members of Nucleus, and the Lords of London. Machin and Naumann were in the band Island. Together, they signed with Daffodil Records, which coined the group's name. (Wikipedia)

  • Gosh this was big, I remember it well. Loved it alot as a kid and it stills sounds great.

  • Used to only listen to the version by Helix but the more I listen to this, it's just as good.

  • I LOVE OUR CANADIAN BANDS. THEY ROCKED THE SEVENTIES!!!

  • a head of their time!

  • i luv our canadian hits as videos, keep up the good work

  • Sebby does the Danforth thing but are Hughie and Gordie still tinkering with Leggat?

  • |s good! to know that they're canadians proud to be too but many peolple think thyat thyey're americans hell not! later

  • first heard this on ginger snaps unleashed ... gotta love that feeling when you finally find a song you've been looking for :)

  • i like this song right here <3

  • I just read an opinion piece in the newspaper about Canadian guitarists.

The authors says that it was this guitar solo he heard as a young teen that woke him up to the fact that there are fabulous guitarists in Canada. Bachman, Young, Cockburn, Naumann, ... and the list goes on.

  • One of THE Best songs ever to come out of Canada...a true Pop Masterpiece ! ! !

  • Should have been a hit in the U.S. Perhaps it bubbled under?

  • @LolaCrazy222 in those days American promoters or labels didn't look to Canada you would have to go to the us and bang on doors or some how get on stage like The Guess Who did the last band that was forced to do that was Bare Naked ladies they were huge in Canada about 8 years before anyone knew them in the USA

  • @DavidandI2 Yeah, same here. Chilliwack is another good example. They were popular in Canada for a good long time before they were popular here in the U.S. with the song "My Girl (Gone,Gone,Gone)". At least down here we can listen to Canadian hits on Canadian stations on the Internet. I heard "(Make Me Do) Anything You Want" by A Foot In Cold Water on MAX 98.7 in Sydney. I heard the eariler hits in Canada by Chilliwack too on MAX 98.7.

  • One of the most beautiful love songs I've heard in my entire life. The magic of music is the day came when the woman it was meant to be danced to came into my life many years ago.A Friday night, a chilled bottle of wine, and the beginning of the happiest moments of my life.

  • Do you know who wrote this song? It's been a fav of mine all these years!

  • @BayBeBoomer

Yes.. Paul Naumann and Danny Taylor of.. A Foot In Coldwater.

  • This song's fucking gay. I'm embarassed to admit I like it.

  • loves it

  • They played at my high school , Central High School, in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, in 1972

  • Great song. Helix coverd it pretty good too.

  • Just wanted to let you know that this song was my parents' song when they were in University....my dad died about 2 weeks ago due to a heart attack, but he praised this band

  • @zappafan136

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. My sincere condolences. I'm glad to know your parents thought so much of the Band. I will pass this on to the other members. What was your Dad's name?

    Danny Taylor

  • Does ANYBODY have anything from Nucleus, who evolved into AFIC??

  • Yes.. use the Youtube search and look for Nucleus or

    Youtube user MrNucleus01

  • If anyone has any footage of AFIC playing IN HEAT live, I would be appaled if you let me know. That song rocks my socks.

  • the bassline for this song seems rediciously simple

  • Listen to the original LP version...what's missing here is a great little bass solo ( not to mention Paul's extended guitar solo has been cut)

  • what other singles do they have?

  • (Make Me Do) Anything You Want / Alone Together 1972 (Isnt Love Unkind) In My Life / Deep Freeze 1972 Lady True / In Heat 1973 Love Is Coming / How Much Can You Take 1973 So Long / Who Can Stop Us Now 1973 (Make Me Do) Anything You Want / Para-Dice 1974 I Know What You Need / Hes Always There (Watching You) 1974 Midnight Lady / All Around Us 1975 Keep A Candle Burning / Its Only Love 1976 Breaking Through / Play My Guitar 1977
  • haha,.. nice thx.. I guess you are really are a fan.

  • Jeez, bad enough to have to mime your song and get it chopped short, but to have to drag your massively heavy, fragile and expensive Hammond organ along for such an indignity! Strange times those were...

  • Lol!! so true!!

What I love about the vid is the audience... no wonder Canadians get this rap for being polite. Here's this rock song, and everyone is in their perfectly spaced chair. lol!! Great song!!

  • Thanks!!! I've been looking for this song forever...

  • A Foot In Coldwater, oh my go-od :)

  • this is such an amazing song....musically A+ but the lyrics and the voice happen to be just a minor accomplice and it comes together making a masterpiece.

  • My boyfriend in high school gave me this LP in the 70s and I still have it. Have always loved this song--thanks for posting! xo

  • this band of the seventies was the best'' i remember seeing these boys at ontario place, soon as paul would start the song ; make me do.. the whole place would lite up like mad'' women just loved it'' these guys were so COOL ON STAGE''

  • Paul was truly amazing and a huge influence on lots of Canadian musicians...We will miss you.

  • Epic. Classic. Canuck. RIP Paul.

  • Paul Naumann was a comet blazing across our hearts leaving a spectacular trail.

A unique talent, and an equally unique man.

I met him in the beginning of 1970. I introduced Paul and Alex to the boys in Nucleus who later changed their name to A Foot in Coldwater. Few people know that fact. We had a special connection. I will miss him forever. My heart goes out to his beloved family,

Kathy, Paul Jr. & Hannah. I grieve with you. Paul left a Musical Legacy for us to remember him by.

    - Cathy Young

  • Still think it's the best Canadian rock song of all time.

  • what about some of the April Wine songs...

  • RIP, Paul. Thanks petecsanky.

  • It is with deep sadness that I must inform you all of the passing of Paul Naumann, lead guitarist for A Foot in Coldwater. He passed in his sleep on October 20, 2009 in his home in New Mexico. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his son Paul Jr. and Hannah his daughter. RIP Paul - we will all miss you......

  • @petecsanky So sorry to hear about Paul's passing. I was a good friend of his back in the '70's but lost touch over the years. My sincere condolencess to his family. R.I.P. my friend, we'll jam again on the other side, L&R Leo Nieberg aka. "Leo DeLyon"

  • Comment removed

  • thank you!!!

  • Excellent!!! Where on earth did you find this video? I heard this song for the 1st time in the early '80's when I came across my mom's "Canadian Mint" album. I thought the album had a cool cover so I carefully took out the record & put it on my turntable. I'd never heard of any of the artists on this record, but I absolutely loved every song on it but this is the one I loved the most & I played it over & over & over!

  • A lot like I meant to type.

  • Hey doesn't the lead singer look at like Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles??

  • Rush never did this. It was Helix.

  • this song was in ginger snaps2 and thats what made the movie good

  • I was about to say that :D

  • how bout this .....could you have done better and if so...can you still.....and if you can what the heck are you doing debating whose best at what..just get to it.. time is a wasting.........meanwhile I'll enjoy the music that's been done.. and proven..the people have spoken.. hehe

  • Love the bellbottoms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lead singer looks like the night stalker...............Richard Ramerez

  • Helix did a good cover!!! Hopefully some rap artist wont get a hold of this song and butcher it!!!

  • Sick! Just sick.

  • Without question, the best Canadian band. Period!!!!

  • Sorry dude, Rush I think has to take the cake...

  • They should get back together and keep on playing

  • Canada had the best Rock bands in the 70's and 80s without a question!

  • Yeayyy Toronto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • kick ass song from a great canadian band...& they are from toronto...

  • Thye actually formed from a band called The Lourdes Of London I think!..As in London Ontario!

  • The Lords of London (from Toronto :) evolved into Nucleus.... who intern evolved into A Foot In Coldwater.

  • Cool 69Lovett........Thanx man for clearing that up!

  • @69Lovett cornflakes and icecream ?

  • Comment removed

  • @sammycircle: It wasn't the Lourdes of London; it was the Fatima of Manchester.

  • great song

  • "Oh, the memories. This song was playing when I first got laid so many years ago."

You mean the song's intro, right? ;)

  • God how I miss the 70's

  • There's a Canadian band that covered this in the early 90s "helix" they didn't do it justice but you should check it out anyway, it's not bad they made it a little heavier, It's awesome as well but you can cover something like this

  • It wasn't the early 90's, it was in the mid 80's and their cover was actually pretty good. This song rules!

  • 87 or 86 I know I don't know why i said early 90s

  • sorry you would know i just checked your profile you are a child of the 70s being from TO

  • amen brother!!!

  • great song, but was it lip synched in this?if its live its perfect

  • Yes great Canadian hit!

  • I loved when this came on in Ginger Snaps 2! Great song in a great film!

  • Awesome track!

    Alex has a great voice.

    Canadian Classic...

  • That's really cool! But did you have to say he was your grandpa???? I'm so old ........

  • my grandpa played the organ in that band

  • saw FICW at the Colonial Tavern on Yonge St. in '73. Awesome show. Anybody remember Lords Of London - pre-FICW.

  • Great solo!!

  • Alex and I went to George Harvey together, apparently he is now doing some gigs with Moxy, as well as FICW. Rock on Alex.

  • 'uncledooley'..."Alex and I went to George Harvey together" Really! Paul Naumann was in my class year...but I never met him. What a tune.

  • Sweet tune! Great performance, sounds just like the recording.

  • The sign of a great band!

  • I've been a fan of Paul's since he was in Butter Garden.

  • This song is in gingersnaps 2. That's how I found out about this song.

  • A Foot in Coldwater will be performing live

At the Pickering Waterfront on Liverpool Rd

On Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 For more information, please visit flavoursbythebay (dot com)

  • one of the greatest songs ever , timeless .We play in a cover band and have requests for this the last 25 years

  • Oh, the memories. This song was playing when I first got laid so many years ago.

  • makes me feel like singing!

  • hay man this guys are back touring! i Recall back in 69 when they were on the road with crowbar and special gusts WOW!!

  • timeless memories of timeless 'toons'..spent a few pockets of dimes on this one..stuffing them into the jukeboxes around town here..sigghhh..I want those times back..

  • Pure early 70s. A stellar song. I love his bellbottom pants. (I grew up with bells, thinking that all pants had always been like that....until the 80s came along.) This song should have gone farther than it did....and I wish it were longer.

  • i seen them at my girlfriends grad at north high school in barrie ontario........in the 70s

  • wow a huge hit when i was approx 16, still is just as good

  • ive had this 45 forever-but never saw them-no chart position in the u.s.great canadian rock!

  • Wonderful. I've got the original 1st LP and 2 singles including this one on vinyl in the loft (on Elektra I think) and a CD "A Foot In Cold Water" from 1993 with the single and 7 other tracks (on LMT Records, probably a boot). Great band, sounding like a blueprint for Foreigner on many tracks. I was playing the CD today and thought I'd look on YouTube for them

  • Love that song! ... what a voice ...

  • Wow! On my 18th birthday I saw Foot in Cold Water Live! They were Fantastic!!!That was 32 years ago.

  • OHHHH MYYYYYY GAWD!!! Incredible.... I am so glad footage exists of these guys... what a phenominal singer... and what an incredible, original guitar solo.... This guy has an incredible voice..... Thanks ever so much for posting this... One of the reasons I got into music and a guitar solo I worked out and play that still sends chills down my spine.... Melody, melody, melody... this song has it in spades!!!!

  • love this tune; paul naumann, petecsanky said it best, you had to this guy live to really hear em play, naumann had such stage presense, wicked strat man,

  • awsome

  • PRICELESS....

  • Great song written by their excellent drummer, Danny ("Crow")Taylor. Paul Naumann's outstandingly classy guitar solos had to be heard live to be fully appreciated. Alex Machin is one of the finest Canadian singers around. Goddo always used to want to play bass as well as Hughie Leggat. Bob ("Hippy") Horne could be counted on to really crank it out from his growling Hammond B3 organ when they played this tune on stage. Another great Canadian band from an era of great music.....

  • haha...

my grandpa still has Hammond B3 organ

    on top of his piano....

my grandpa is Bob ("Hippy") Horne ...

    thx alot...lol

  • this is pretty cool. thought it was a helix song.

  • 69Lovett, God bless you! I am immensely enjoying all your posts. Some rare and wonderful Canadian gems here. Thanks so much!

Is that Geddy Lee's tear-drop bass he's playing there?

  • Nope... that's Hugh Leggat's.

That bass goes back to the Nucleus days.. and you can see him still playing it in 1988 on

A Foot in Coldwater's "Midnight Lady" or Hughie Leggat's "Our Love Will Never Die" vid on this channel...

I find it odd to see him without it these days..

    Cheers

  • saw em at massey hall with ELO....Climax Blues Band was the opening band...they..failed to show..they called Foot in Cold Water...they came to Massey Hall and did a great show and this is a rock classic of all time

  • Wow, what a thrill to find this, one of my favorite songs of all time. I remember someone saying once there was some sort of cross over between this band and sniff and the tears, any truth to that?

  • sniff and the tears...?

No connection that I'm aware of.

    Cheers eh.

  • Beautiful song, amazing vocals, the greatest rock band of all time. Soaring guitar solo. Transcendent.

  • Awesome band! My dad is the drummer, Danny Taylor and I know Alex & Hughey personally. Great guys and amazing band!

  • I still have a copy of the original vinyl from 1972 and it sounds great. Any truth to the story that the band name was decided on the road when someone made the comment that they were a foot in Coldwater (Ontario) and they thought that would make a good name?

  • Well that rumour is half true. Being in Coldwater Ontario did have something to do with the name but "A Foot In Coldwater" is also a way to say shocking among other things.

  • Seems hard to find sixties, early seventies canadian stuff like Mandala, or the Paupers , or even Mother Tuckers Yellow Duck ! thanks for the post !

  • ..as I said. I wasn't entirely sure

  • Hey Chancesdad. Type in Helix, and their version is now here..sounds really good. I know Helix is Canadian, but I think "A Foot in Cold Water"..maybe British. If I am wrong..sorry guys.

  • Toronto, Ontario , Canada

  • Wow this song is sounds so good..dude looks like my dad in the 70's....I love it though so much that it was played at my wedding for my song!

  • I really love this song... these guys are Canadian right?

  • They sure are...

  • what year was this released and what city were your dad and co. from? I am in Kitchener and our boys Helix did a nice remake of this one....Cheers....

  • The band is from Toronto..

The record was released in '72 and then again in '74.

The original ('72) is longer and IMHO the best version..

Garry Lee and Showdown also recorded a C&W version of the song..

  • nice. thanks

  • The lead guitarist is my dad... kinda odd seeing him in this stuff.
