  • This fast and easy pinwheels are the best ever. Can't wait to try it!

  • I've never seen this technique before, very awesome! The pinwheel block is one of my all time favorite blocks! Can you do a demo on how to sew a quarter inch seam using the pre-cuts with the pinking sheared edges?

  • @MsKathy07 Great idea!! Thanks! I will see what we can do!

  • Do you trim the center meeting point at all, or press it in any particular way? It seems like it may be pretty thick where all the pieces meet...? Thank you- I LOVE your tutorials on YT!! Teresa

  • @50tmack I do trim off the dog ears...(the points that stick out) Adnd press the seam open.

  • not that I'm trying to get off topic here but omg! I just noticed that "Summer in the Park" was hanging on the wall in the background. I was wondering what the finished quilt would look like. it's so so cute! I want to make one!

  • I spent $40 hard earned dollars to get this video through her. If I knew that I could get it for free here, I would have never purchased it through her. I want my $40 back!!! Well worth it but not fair to have to pay for it and then have her offer it for free for everyone else to view!

  • @sweet1nothings I think craftsy has a money back guarantee, we do all of our tips, tricks, classes, and tutorials for free here. Let us know if there's anything you'd like to learn how to do! Have a great day!

    Sewingmyway@blogspot.com

  • Love this! I recently bought a solid charm pack and some really pretty charm packs ... I'm going to try this technique!

  • HA - you make it look so easy - but how do you avoid all that doubt and fear of cutting all that fabric that you have stored in 16 boxes for over 20 years that you are afraid won't match or you will mess up royally!!! Wish me luck - with this tutorial I may be getting braver and crossing the obstacle of that mountain! Thanks for posting this!

  • @ckleinca YOU are gonna do great!! You bought that fabric to use....So get to cutting and make magic happen! :) I SO understand what you are going through, though!! Send us a picture of your quilt in progress!! :)

  • THANK YOU.

  • You're a genius

  • I know a lot of work goes into each tutorial.... I just want to say I love yours... I use them to refresh my knowledge.... and to learn new tips... thank you so much... I feel so comfy listening and learning from you. Thank you thank you.

  • Thanks for this! I had always been a bit intimidated by pinwheels because they have to be so accurate. This technique is almost fool-proof!

  • Thanks Jen, I loved your tutorial. I'm going to make one out of bluejean and red bandana material. I think I'll put sashing between the blocks. Wish you'd said how many blocks it takes to make baby size quilt. Thanks again.

  • Thx for the vid.

  • hello mam, love your work a lot, would love to learn from u but unfortunately i cant find all the things u have such as cloth cutter scale etc here in pakistan, could suggest what shoul i do....

  • @bubbles38308 All these things are available in Pakistan. Go around and check again.

  • I love this method. I needed a quick idea for a doll quilt for my friends daughter. When I saw this video I just knew it would be perfect. I used fabric from my stash. I used 4 in. squares and sashing between each pinwheel. It worked perfect. The quilt turned out perfect and everyone loved it.

  • I love this viedo. and all the viedos from Missouri Quilt Co. these ladies are wonderful

  • Thanks so much for this video! Wonderful taste in fabrics and easy to follow. I love Pinwheels, a classic and traditional quilt block!

  • I love your tutorials and you make me feel more confident to tackle some

    projects!

    thanks sooo much! x

  • Im learning so much by waching you, amazing how easy it really is when you first get started, i love waching all your little tecniqes,,,

    thanks for sharing ,

    Helle :))

  • hi im trying the pinwheel im amazed on how fast and fun this project is this takes the work out of it and puts the fun back in lol

  • I had to starch all my blocks to keep them from stretching. After cutting the squares and before sewing the squares together I cut off the dog ears.. I was using my quarter inch foot and it didn' like those points. Then I had a hump in the middle where I joined them. Then I googled and found out to clip into the hump to remove a few stitches to open it up so the seams would flatten out. It has been a lesson in process. And I've been working hours. 20 blocks done and 80 to go!

  • i have to trim those things off. they always get stuck in my machine. great method.

  • VeeVee-yes, if you started with bias edges, it would work. If you cut strips on the bias (45 degree with a ruler) - and then cut sq from the strip using a ruler so that it was turned to line up the straight of grain edges with the ruler...I think it would work.

    Johanna in WI

  • @wisfritz4

that's what i thought - it seems to me, doing it this way would make making HST a lot faster???

  • doesn't anybody care that all outside edges are on the bias?

  • @swishatwo I would love for you to try it and let me know...You don't have to be afraid of the bias. I have made tons of these and They go together so nicely. If you have trouble with the bias you can use spray starch, and pin alot. The time saved way outweighs any bias worries...Let me know what you think.

  • @swishatwo

it's a great theory..... and fast..., and now that you've pointed out the bias.... i'm thinking, would it be possible to start the original square (of course you couldn't use a charm pack square) on the bias..... which should end up with the finished one NOT being on the bias... what do you think??

  • I saw a pinwheel pattern with bright pinwheels on a black background but can't find it again. Could you tell me what to click on to find it.

  • It is good IN THOERY, but when you do this you have bias edges on the ouside edges of the block. What a nightmare that would be.

  • @wisfritz4 It isn't a nightmare. It works great and I have done it over and over....try it and let me know!

  • I've sent this video to all my quilting friends,it's wonderful, fast and quick! Thanks Jenny

  • Fantastic! No waste and so quick. I can't wait to try it.

  • very neat technigue....love this idea.

  • thanks!

  • Jenny, you absolutely amaze me! Your tutorials are the best. Your days must fly bye with all the new things you have to show us and with the crew you have it must be laughing all day! I watch your videos everyday. Have you ever concidered making a DVD of all the tutorials you have. I for one would be interested in purchasing it so I could watch them in my sewing room on the TV??

    Bigs Hugs!

    Connie

  • i luv this i made a whole quilt in half the time it used to take me

  • Thanks, I'm just about to do a pinwheel quilt with charm packs and will definitely use this technique! You're the best!

  • You're the best and most helpful with tips and shortcuts! You wouldn't believe the agonizing pinwheels quilts I've made in the past! Thanks again, can't wait to try this one. Keep the video's coming!!

  • thank you for this idea.that wa awesome.cheers!!

  • Oh my gosh you are a genius!!!

  • Oh Jenny....you make this look so easy. I tried it and alothough it wasn't hard, mine did not look at good as yours.

Thanks for these tutorials.....they inspire me!

  • @martilindsey - Mine didn't come out perfect either. I am going to keep trying until I get it! Good luck with yours!

  • Oh Jenny....you make this look so easy. I tried it and alothough it wasn't hard, mine did not look at good as yours.

Thanks for these tutorials.....they inspire me!

  • This is to awesome...I will be using this very very soon.

As for the Mary Ellens, I can personally vouch that it is wonderful and really helps keep fabrics in place and to not stretch much on the bias.

  • I just made my forst pinwheel! It turned out pretty darn good!

  • I was up last night watching all of your video's. They are a great source for us beginners. Thanks and I shared it on my FB page.

  • Oh my gosh! Thank you so much! I have made a couple of these as baby quilts to give as gifts and you wouldn't believe how I made them! Let's just say it was a lot more labor intensive! This is my favorite pattern for quilt squares and I am anxious to try it this way. Thank you again!

  • brilliant...now i have less stress about measuring and getting the sewing right!

  • Thanks Jenny for the pinwheel video...You're the best and make it seem so easy

  • Fantastic! -- michele

  • fantastic tutorial, I'm just starting quilting and wanted to do one with pinwheels next so this is a huge helping hand for me! Thankyou :)

  • Just a warning, be careful if you are mixing up charm packs from different Manufacturers, they are not all 5" squares! Moda's look to be a true 5", but Thimbleberries are about 5-1/4" squares, & a few others are somewhere in between. As long as you stay with one company in a quilt, or make sure you trim down those larger squares you will be fine. Best wishes all you quilting enthusiasts! Especially thanks to Jenny, love the great shortcut, and love watching your natural teaching style.

  • Jenny, I loooove watching your tutes! Thanks for another good one! :)

  • I love the enthusiasm and passion you display when doing what you love.

  • I LOVE pinwheels and I am glad to see you found this shortcut!

  • This is a wondedul easy method, but just a caution in that the edges are cut on the bias so be careful you do not pull when attaching the half square triangles.

  • Love this tutorial. I'm math challenged. If I wanted 4 1/2" half square triangles, how big of a square would i need to start with using this technique?

I'm going to use a lot of your fast and easy patterns this year for my charity quilts.

  • thank you

  • How refreshing Jenny is, charming and refreshing and explains in a simple way.,

  • hi new to quilting so this is probably a stupid question , i noticed in you videos you dont back stitch (lock the stitches) is it not neccaserry, wont it come apart? love your videos , ive learned alot . thanks

  • @SID39 In most cases, you don't need to backstitch. Usually there is another row of stitching that will cross that end and lock those stitches in.

  • @SID39 I noticed that too....I want to start quilting at the first of the year and am trying to get a jump by watching these tutorials..they're great!

  • Pure genius! Now I know exactly what I'm making for my niece's new baby!

  • How big are the squares that you start out with please? The ones that you take from the pack of fabric please? I am new to quilting and this tutorial made it all look so easy! Thanks.

  • @MSCsplendida You can use any size squares you want. Mine were 5 inches. Good Luck!

  • How quick and easy you made it look! I can hardly wait to try it!

  • thanks again

  • This is the greatest yet. Thank you

  • I tried this ...they are soooooo easy...I have been playing with them.....you can put them together in so many ways.. ;) they don't even have to be pinwheels......

  • @bothepeep You are so right! They are just half square triangles!

  • Thank you for the nice tutorial, simple easy to follow.

  • Thank you for this and all your easy to follow tutorials - they are greatly appreciated.

  • WOW. What a great tip for half square triangles!!! Thank you.

  • absolutely brilliant!

  • It does however make each outside edge of the half square triangle square on a bias edge.. so each of teh squares when you join them together will be much more likely to introduce some element of distortion. Not only when you join each small piece together but also when each pinwheel block is joined.

  • I've been teaching this method for over 10 years now - in fact, it was the basis of my Bias Beauty Star 2006 New Years Day mystery. You can see pictures at Quiltbug.com or see the video under Quiltbugs.

  • Great idea! I'd sure like to have your ironing board fabric :D

  • Brilliant!

  • you are adorable

  • love your videos! and u are always an inspiration jenny!! god bless u

  • This is my favorite video!!! Thanks so much! Keep those videos coming! You do a great job!

  • For Alicejoyful1 - I did the math. If the size of a side of the starting square is 'a' and the size of the side of the ending half sq triangle is x then x=.5(sq root of (2*a-squared)). Hard to write the equation here. So, a charm pack is 5"x5". 'a' is then = to 5. The half triangle sq is then .5(sq root (2 *5squared)) or .5(sq rt(2*25)) -> .5(sq rt(50)) ->.5 * (7.07) = 3.536" square

  • My mouth fell open, why did'nt I think of that? lol. Well done and thank you.

  • This is a terrific tutorial and I have been suffering making pinwheels. Thank you so much. Lynne Northcote Australia

  • what size are the squares and what size does it make after you cut it?

  • What an absolutely incredibly easy block! Guaranteed accuracy! What a fantastic idea! Thank you for sharing. Keep those tutorials coming!

  • I can only thank you so much, I have been afraid to start patching though I am experienced at sewing and applique. I am now excited to start after watching loads of your tutorials. Thank you so much.

    Loopywren in England

  • i have been delaying trying patterns with triangles but no more!! Thanks a bunch!

  • As always, easy to understand and fun to watch. Thanks.

  • i am doing this now....you are sooooo great

  • THANKS!!!! LOVE this!!

  • Saw this method in the May 2008 issue of "Quilt" magazine. Ann Hermes made a "Miniature Ohio Star" quilt. Only, after she sewed the two squares together, she drew the lines for 8 triangles. So after cutting into 4, cut those in half to make 8 triangles, instead of 4 half triangles. Then she sewed them together to make Hourglass squares, instead of Pinwheels.

    I too want some measurements!!!!

  • omg I can't believe this is so easy to do....never tried a pinwheel cause I always thought it was hard, well thanks to you no longer. I am going to start, Thank you so much.

  • I agree -- omg how simple! I've always admired a pinwheel quilt but just don't want to cut all those triangles. Never imagined there was another way to do it! Wow. This will definitely be my next quilt top. Also happy to know about the Moda solid color packs!

  • OMG, how simple!!!

  • Jenny you did it again! It's easy and you can see which way the pinwheel is supposed to go. You are just brilliant!

    Thank you.

  • Sensacional!!!

  • This tutorial came just in time!! I'm planning on making a pinwheel quilt for my daughter! LOVE IT!

  • Great idea for pinwheels! Awesome, Jenny! Love all MSQC videos!

  • This sure looks easier than the way I made my pinwheels for my last quilt. Guess I'll have to try Jenny's method and make another one.

  • Can you give some sort of calculation for what size squares to start out with to get what size HST???

  • This is the neaatest thing I have seen in a long time. Great time saver. Thank you

  • Wow, how neat is that!

  • Sometimes it helps to think out side the box !! in this case, the old way of doing things! Kudos ! This is so fast I cant wait to try it! Love the tutorials! Keep them comming!

  • I have been struggling and struggling with pinwheels. This is a great idea. I can't wait to try it. Thank!!!!! Jenny, you are terrific.

  • holy cow that's fabulous!

  • Now why didn't I think of that :) Your technique will save me oodles of time. Thanks!

  • wow ! I would never have thought of that ! I'm definately going to try it ! thanks !

  • This is a very smart method. I would only add that pins can insure the matching point in the middle.

  • Fantastic....what a great tutorial.
