Highly interesting because of the helix form the clouds formed around the funnel in the early stages (the tornado itself is inside the helix), then the tornado being visible, partially visible and invisible in different stages, the tornado's slow progress forward and the second funnel cloud in the sky from which emerged a suction vortex like a writhing snake. Although notable, the suction vortex on the ground which seemed to be circling and attacking a tree, finally yanking it from the earth.
It wasn't one of the first, it was the first time a tornado was caught on tape from the air and NOAA grabbed that tape because it was worth it's weight in gold. I was working in South Minneapolis that day, and got off work about 20 minutes after it hit and rode my motrocycle up to Brooklyn Park to check out the damage.
omg I was ten when this happened. the first tornado I ever was in. My family was in town visiting some friends and I remember watching some parade when these giant sirens went off...and later I got to see a car floating down the street.. wow. the memories....
I lived less than a mile from the nature center when that occurred. I remember it as if it were yesterday. I was six or seven years old and that was one of the CRAZIEST experiences you could live through.
It was LOUD. I've heard many peoples say it sounds like a freight-train headed for your living room and THAT IS EXACTLY how it sounded. I remember my younger brother asking my mom "Mom, is that a TRAIN"?!
Afterward, the devastation was immense. It was also very dark and strangely QUIET.
I was 5 and I think I vaguely remember this. I lived in north minneapolis the sky was all green and yellow. Wierd brought back som memories good video thanks.
It's hard to believe this was more than 21 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. The tornado first touched down a couple miles from my house. I was at work that evening and watched it on KARE 11 with my coworkers. I can't believe how young Paul Douglas looks in this clip.
I lived in Blaine when this tornado went through and could see the twister hopping across to our south. I can't believe how young Magers looks as well. Di hasn't changed a bit though lol
Thank you indeed...I was living in St. Louis Park at the time, but my roots/family were in Coon Rapids, mostly. I was 10 years old at the time (now 32)..and I still remember going down East River Road with my parents and looking at all the samage. Wow. My hair still stands on end.
I remember this day so vividly - I lived by Northtown at the time and remember playing outside, hearing the thunder and then seeing the tornado. Ran home and saw this on the television - as we were sitting under the staircase.
WOW that is some pretty amazing aerial footage:)

I was sixteen and working at Arby's and watched this tornado go by a couple of miles away. We watched it for about ten minutes. Never will forget it.

Max Messmer is of German descent which accounts for the "funky" accent.

this was one of the first tornadoes caught on a live newscast at the time.

Sky11 pilot Max Messmer has a unique, funky accent. It's definitely not midwestern.

Not to be nitpicky, but they got the location wrong on that footage from the helicopter. That was in Fridley, not Brooklyn Park.
chabba77 4 years ago
They said fridley at 1:32 so it touched down in both places.

Why is Diana Pierce yelling? Man is she dramatic.
Good stuff here, it was like yesterday. Time flies! Thanks so much for posting all this.
