i tried this, following the instructions, and ended up wasting a lot of fabric. :'( the trapezoid ended up too small to fit around my hips. And i discovered that when I try to wrap it around myself, it doesn't end up looking like an A-line skirt like i expected it to.
i try to make allllll my cloths, i work at joann fabrics and im only 20yrs old and i hate it when older people say its toooo expensive to sew cloths.....i think you show cheap and easy ways to sew i love it thanks
OH GOD thanks that I've found this video of yours!! I have a project about dresses and it's hard to search videos on how to make dresses!! Thank God I've found this one!!
@j3nnjos3 o ok well for the upper part u have to ct a pie that measures ur bust and the lenght has to be from ur bust to ur hips cut ure goona be foldin it in have over all the layers
I would love to go to prom and get compliments on my dress, so that when they ask where I got it I can say "I made it" that always gets a great reaction xD
But anyways this is suuuuper cute! I dont believe in prom so I didnt go, instead I hung out at downtown disney with 3 of my friends and saw a movie, we had a really good time. No regrest. ;D
hey i love your tutorialll so much btw can you tell me what sewing machine do you use and how to double stitch the fabric is your machine got double needle in it? thankyouuu
I absolutely love sewing and making my own things. But over the years i've stopped making things because of college etc.
You're so inspiring - i'm gonna start again! :)
One problem: i've not got a sewing machine - can anyone recommend me one? And please bare in mind i've got a budget :) - i want a machine that's good but won't burn my wallet at the same time - if that's possible? Thanks :)
I love this ^^ next christmas prom Im just wearing jeans, tshirt and a hoodie, but the at the last prom imma sew this :3 Imma try it out first, then sew a new one for my last prom <3
do you have to use lace? are there any other substitutes? i'm just asking because i don't really like lace that much but it's a really cute dress and i want to try it out. you have some really cool ideas- i wish i was that creative =)
After watching this like a thousand times, I'm finally starting to understand it. But there's still some parts I don't understand that well? Can someone help me with the beginning steps with the rectangle and also when it says "Be sure the small end of the skirt matches the bodice length." I'm a beginner but I'd still like to try this, please help!
I don't know about anyone else but I had a formal prom and this dress would not have gone over well because it looks a little to casual for me. But for just a dress I think it is gorgeous.
@ohheyitsmerissa For how long you want the trapezoid to be you should measure from your waist down to where you want the dress to end on your legs. If you wanted to make it empire line then measure just below your bust to where you want the dress to end. :) hope this wasn't confusing :/
Love this so much and am planning to make it but i am totally confused! is the part that goes around your bust folded over for the whole thing?Plus what do you mean when you say dont catch the layers when you were sewing them together?
@MyDancer97 She means don't catch any of the layers on that part because you needed to be able to turn everything from the "burrito" inside-out and THEN sew the layers together when you fold the rectangle in half..
I got a bit confused at first, but when you watch the vid a few more times you'll understand.
did u also fold the lace?? and when u pull out everything do u pull it to the right side (left , right) or to the right side ( right, wrong) of the dress?? pls answer i really really want to do this dress
@weirdofreak02 Its your choice if you fold the lace or not. It depends if you want the lace to look thick or if you just want a sheer piece of lace. When she pulled everything out at the end she pulled it out to the right side (right , wrong). Hope this wasn't too confusing!
That dress is ADORABLE. Im probably gunna hate my prom, but im going. =/.... I'm making my own dress too and was looking for ideas of types of prom dresses that might be cute. You're very good at explaining things.<3

I'm going to a wedding and celebrating one of my bestie's 21st birthday in January! I am going to definitely make this dress. ~thnx for uploading! ^_^
I have a valentine's dance for a club im in.. it's my first year so I was flipping out what kind of dress i should make. you know that feeling that you found the perfect one? i have it watching this :D
I am definitely using this idea for homecoming! This is just a very cute dress. Thanks so much for this tutorial! I would wear this to any semi formal occasion, clubbing, or just on a date! It's so versitile. I'm not sure I would wear it to prom. It's the length that gets me. Still a great tutorial. And so simple too!
I'm totally going to make a skirt version of this! The tube top look doesn't work for me since I'm too big-busted to wear a strapless (unless it's a corset...*lol*) but I LOVE the look of the gray with lace and tulle! Absolutely gorgeous.
I have a few questions... how long were the dimensions of your trapezoid and what did you use for a closure? I just tried to make this today and the first trapezoid I cut didn't fit my body. Do I need to make the shirt differently since I have a huge ass? lol :p

I recently purchased a sewing machine (I got it like, two days ago XD) and have been looking for tutorials for beginners. This one is sooo cute! I'm definitely subscribing and trying out your tuts :) Do you have any recommendations for things to sew at an extreme beginner's level? Thanks!
wow this is soo pretty. if i make this i want it to be a full skirt, and i want to add a neck piece and sleeves. wud u add the lace over the neck part and sleeves the same as the skirt part, except without the tulle?
can u do a hair tutorial of how u did ur hair in the picture @ the beginning of the video? & if u get to record videos that r longer than 10 minutes[partnership w/ yt] than can u do it like REALLY step by step? i can't do anything.. but once i learn from my mom or something i can actually start..
Hey , nothing to do with this but , Im going to be making a video of my outfits and everything and maybe you should take my (and other peoples) idea of this and make it better or into your own style . I will send you a message staiting when im making it .
@pepsifunk A trapezoid is a shape where the bottom line is longer then the top and the sides angle out to meet the bottom. If you google it you can find lots of picture examples. Hope that helps :)
but i was wondering if you could maybe make a tutorial on how to make a clutch.. i have now idea how to make a stiff, nice evening clutch that would go with this dress. any ideas?
Hey i would like to do this dress for a semi formal thing at School but i want a ruffled skirt thing for the bottom part.. could i find a way to do the bottom and use the same methode you used there for itt ?
@tilena211 most definitely! use a bit more tulle though. My prom dress was long and I hated that thing, i wished I would've gotten the gnads to go with a shorter one.

WTF is a trapezoid?!! I'm English.. is this an American word?
pepsifunk 1 year ago
@pepsifunk A trapezoid is a shape where the bottom line is longer then the top and the sides angle out to meet the bottom. If you google it you can find lots of picture examples. Hope that helps :)

@pepsifunk o wow. its a shape. its like a triangle with a flat top instead of a pointy one. i guess its an american shape :)

this is adorable...I would use longer fabric and make it touch the floor, cuz prom dresses tend to be more long. Cute though!!
tilena211 1 year ago 7
@tilena211 most definitely! use a bit more tulle though. My prom dress was long and I hated that thing, i wished I would've gotten the gnads to go with a shorter one.

Your very talented !! Can you do a beginners video? For newbies?
tilena211 1 year ago 2
@tilena211 but prom dresses are short not long now the longer style would be nice for homecoming
